Looking At An Android Device?
I know, I know.. this post is almost blasphemous, but I thought it might be helpful for some of you out there. After all, Android is another project by the same guy that helped bring us Danger! (I’m talking about Andy Rubin) Don’t worry, I’m keeping my Sidekick LX 2009, and hiptop3.com will continue running. We ain’t going nowhere.
That said, the Sidekick Disaster of October had a lot of people start thinking about leaving the Sidekick, but the big question is and was: which device to jump to? It seems like there are three solid choices: iPhone, Blackberry, and Android. Each one is different in its own way, and none of them compare to some of the features that the Sidekick has. From my experience and talking with people it feels like the Android platform comes the closest to the Sidekick.
So I sat down and put together Android Shopper to help compare all the different Android devices on the market right now. If you’re thinking about buying an Android device but aren’t sure which one, I’d recommend checking out the comparison of Android phones. If you’ve already switched to an Android device (or tried one in the past), please leave a comment on the “More Info” page for the phone you tried telling everyone what you loved/hated about it!
BTW, anyone want to start a petition to get Android on the Sidekick platform?

Android on the Sidekick would be awesome! I’d gladly be the second person to sign it! ..behind you (the admin) of course.

I doubt Android would be on the sidekick platform. Windows mobile competes with Android on other phones and the fact M$ is on the platform. I like to see other cellphones on here, maybe not often but if you compare it with the sidekick, its good reading.
November 10th, 2009 at 6:16 pm [ Quote ]
I wish M$ WASN’T on the platform to begin with because it was their irresponsible **** that got us into this mess into the first place.
I definitely would like an Android device. You certainly answered my frustrations.

Android on an MS owned product? That will be the day…..MS no longer owns Danger or Danger simply no longer “is”.

Awesome comparison!
One minor correction. You have the Magic listed on the grid as having a 5mp camera. It has a 3.2mp camera.

I have moved on to the Moto Cliq, for me it was the closest thing to the sidekick available on T Mobile, I didn’t want to switch carriers. For the most part its a great device, of course the keyboard isn’t as good as the sidekick, but u get used to it fairly quickly, I’m posting this from it now. Faster processor, multi-window web browsing, smaller than the sidekick, great screen, free games and apps, make ringtones from songs u have on your phone, 3G, great game emulators. Battery is not as good as the sidekick of course, with Motoblur always running. It doesn’t have shoulder buttons, or autotext, but it does have jump shortcuts & copy and paste. Can hold a microSD up to 32GB, comes with quick office, which let’s you view word, excel, and powerpoint files. All in all, it can do most of what the sidekick can and more, and what it doesn’t do like the sidekick is a fair sacrifice for what you are getting. And as much as I hate Google, android is an OS that is getting better and changing with each update, that’s not happening with the sidekick and nowhere as quickly. I still have love for the sidekick, it was the only type of phone I had on T Mo before now, but it was just progressing too slowly, not making enough advancement with each new version when compared to what else it out there. I had to let go of my $20 unlimited data and text plan, but I got a corp discount so it won’t be too bad.
November 10th, 2009 at 6:38 pm [ Quote ]
Oops, thanks for catching that! It’s hard to keep all of these devices straight! hehe
November 10th, 2009 at 8:13 pm [ Quote ]
You should also put the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 in there.
It’s got an 8 MP camera, Android 1.6, and 1 GHz processor.
November 10th, 2009 at 8:16 pm [ Quote ]
Oh yes, the only OS that belongs on the Sidekick is the Danger OS.

I WAS seriously looking at the Andriod phone untell I read an article on Slashdot that revealed it’s data plan is a total scam. Limited to 4G a month data is their “unlimited” with PRICEY overage charges and no true unlimited data plan at ANY cost. Total rip off, IMO unless ypu want to pay upwards of $100 a month just for the data alone! I’ll pass, the Moto-cliq looks good though.
November 10th, 2009 at 10:18 pm [ Quote ]
nice work!!! I’m looking at the Motorola Droid carefully…the only thing that’s keeping me is the cheaper plans if I stay on tmobile.

I’m on an Android G1 RIGHT NOW.
I’ve had it for about 3 days.
And frankly, it was the best choice ever.
Don’t get me wrong, I was a raging sidekick fanboy, but the android does one thing
That kills the sidekick.
Open-source development.
That, and the fact that the G1 is a touche screen and flicks up similare to a sidekick gives
The G1 Android a
Sidekick LX 2010, if you will.
Apps are FREE or cheap, the OS is POWERFULL and the ringtones are YOUR choice (lol)
If there is something id complain about to this phone, it’d be the battery life.
My Sidekick LX lasted all day long, almost into 2 days
My G1 lasts about half a day of the same usage id be using with the sidekick.
I think the DROID is a better Android phone, but I wanted to stay inside the tmobile family
So in short:
The G1 in my mind, is the Android version of the Sidekick, id go with it if I were you!

Which one? Android is a platform not a singular phone. I was a bit concerned about my new carrier’s 5G restriction on an unlimited plan too, until I talked with them and confirmed it was only if you used your phone as a modem, not use directly from it (google maps, web browsing, email, etc).
Oh, and the unlimited data-only/unlimited text only plan I signed up for on the phone? The same exact cost I was paying t-mobile for the same thing.
November 11th, 2009 at 7:30 am [ Quote ]
Well, T-Mobile owns the brand “Sidekick” so they could easily “sue” Microsoft to be able to use the name on other devices (perhaps made by Sharp). and instead of a MotoBlur, there could be a Danger-ish front end — but I would just be happy with a decent Sidekick-like Keyboard and 4 corner keys (and move the power button to the top, not the bottom! Maybe a mid-shoulder key!!)
November 11th, 2009 at 11:54 am [ Quote ]
Thanks for this. I especially like the way you’ve created a category for “phones with keyboards” for those of us migrating away from Sidekicks and are spoiled by its awsome keyboard.
Wicked1, that’s a great writeup on the Moto Cliq. You should submit that to AndroidShopper as a review.
Setnakt, the data plan is wholly determined by the carrier, not by the phone’s OS. I find it difficult to believe that the terms you asserted are true for all Android devices (including, now, the Barnes & Noble Nook ebook reader) across all carriers. That’s just silly.

The Droid is the way to go because it’s on Verizon’s Network.
Verizon is really good. They’ve got better coverage than AT&T AND they’ve got better 3G Connection.
Verizon is already working on LTE and will be getting 4G soon, leaving it’s competitors in the dust.
Verizon also has a better selection of phones. For example, BlackBerries: Pearl Flip, Storm 1 and Storm 2, Curve, Tour, World, 8703, and now soon the Curve 2, and Essex (Bold 2). Unlike AT&T, all Verizon BlackBerries have 3G data. AT&T only has the Bold with 3G support.
Verizon is finally starting to embrace hardware, too. They’re getting the Bold 2 in December-January, BlackBerry Storm 2 has already came out, (BlackBerry Essex). Droid and Droid Eris (already came out), Omnia 2 later in the month, Curve 2, Chocolate touch, and much more.
On top of that, The Droid is probably better than the iPhone because it’s, unlike the iPhone. Free Google Maps, which made Tom Tom’s AND Garmin’s stock PLUMMET on the day of release (and that was just BETA). Droid does better at multitasking AND synchronizes with your social networking, making it an overall win for Sidekick users.
In conclusion, I am getting the Motorola Droid on Verizon.
Besides, once Verizon gets their 4G Network, Apple will float to them for a second time and use them as a carrier. Charts have shown that Apple is not happy with AT&T, either, because AT&T can barely even handle the iPhone. iPhone didn’t have MMS because of AT&T, not Apple. AT&T didn’t have enough “bandwith” for the iPhone users, yet every single other phone on AT&T had full MMS up and running. And there is no excuse for AT&T, either, because T-Mobile SHARES TOWERS WITH THEM AND ARE STILL ABLE TO GIVE SIDEKICK USERS (which is a greater amount than iPhone users) MMS CAPABILITIES.
I’m leaving T-Mobile for Verizon.
Good luck.
November 11th, 2009 at 12:05 pm [ Quote ]
And just for the record, I don’t think T-Mobile really cares if Sidekicks aren’t going to survive or not.
T-Mobile isn’t trying to push Sidekick’s on anyone.
They’ve got better devices, Android Devices and BlackBerries. Let’s face it, they’ve all been over Sidekicks and will continue to be because Danger doesn’t have the resources that those other companies have.
Android is POWERED by Google and BlackBerries are STILL the number one selling smartphones on the market, even though iPhone is out.

Astronomer, the carrier they mentioned was Verison. Just go to Slashdot and do a search there on “Android” and see the facts for yourself, it’s all backed up, and Slashdot is a very credable source.
November 11th, 2009 at 1:41 pm [ Quote ]
I know there’s a “OS Version” column in that comparison chart, but I’m surprised no one has mentioned OS versions in comments yet.
There’s a lot of confusion out there on whether or not the Cliq (which runs 1.5) will ever get Android 2.0. Meanwhile, Droid gets 2.0 out of the box.
I recommend reading this article:

Thanks, Setnakt, for taking the time to respond. I’m a reader of Slashdot and I didn’t mean to impugn Slashdot’s credibility. It’s a great site with reliable information. However, I maintain that this is a carrier (Verizon, in this case) issue, and not an Android issue. I’ve not seen any fine print in any T-Mobile contracts, for instance, with similar “unlimited” Android data plan limitations. But because of Verizon’s terms, I’ve decided that the Droid (at least through Verizon) is not for me. I’m sticking with T-Mobile, despite the MS debacle.
For my part, I’m waiting for T-Mobile to offer a more Droid-like phone (MotoBlur’s teen-centric social emphasis is not my style) before I abandon my Sidekick LX. I’ve got over a year left on my contract, so I’m in no hurry. I have, however, obtained a GMail account and have transferred my contacts so that my move to Android will be less painful.
Charles B, I forgot to thank you for your G1 endorsement. I love that phone. It’s more business-like, less teenybop, and has a five-line qwerty keyboard more similar to the Sidekick’s than any other Android phone. But I’d like to see what else T-Mobile has to offer by the time my contract ends.
November 11th, 2009 at 3:47 pm [ Quote ]
It’s only 30 dollars to add on the Data Plan for the Motorola Droid. That’s cheaper than the Sidekick’s Data Plan.
However, if you want unlimited text, you have to get a SELECT Plan. I don’t know why Verizon doesn’t have an unlimited text add-on. Anyway, the select plan starts a 59.99.
So, 29.99 + 59.99 ~ 95 dollars per month.
November 11th, 2009 at 4:15 pm [ Quote ]
sidekick: unlimited data/unlimited text -> 30$
droid: smallest plan you can get: 80$
They are not even playing in the same league, let alone ballpark.

Jumped to Verizon’s DROID. Final nail in the coffin was the rate increase from $0.20 to $0.45/min voice on the data only side-kick plan that I’d enjoyed since the sidekick 2. I never received a notice about the chage…
November 11th, 2009 at 7:54 pm [ Quote ]
I thought it was just me! My voice charges were more than double what I expected so immediately called them and asked why they went from .20 to .45. They did not know (their answer: “calling plans change”). When I asked if I should have, oh, actually been told about the change it was “yes, umm, we are not sure why you did not get a notice”.
That, all the sidekick annoyances the past month, email going down before that, their ‘loyalty’ dept trying to sell me a phone for what someone they had no prior contact with could get for a deal, well:
Hello android, nice to meet you.
My SK gets turned off tomorrow. My Moment arrives tomorrow too.

I’m not sure what will be my next phone, with the terriable restrictions on data with Verison, and AT&T’s lies and outright TERRIABLE coverage and “service” (if you can even call it that) I’m trying to look to stay with T-Mobile. Still lots of choices like the G1 and Moto-cliq look good. Only got tell next January (2010) tell my contract expires and my Sidekick (07) is still working fine. I *was* looking at the LX 09, but that’s HIGHLY doubtfull now, not only because of the current outage, but also because of the crappy keyboard on that phone (disintragrating with basic use and then not being covered by warrenty). Stuff like that is why I never buy a phone that’s less than 6 months old (and all the hidden bugs known). And it’s even more doubtfull there will be ever another new Sidekick. What a shame, been with this device since the B/W origional. “Thanks” a-hole-Microsoft, I hope Apple wipes you and your worthless Windows 7 scam and especially whatever **** phone you bulid from stolen Danger-Sidekick technology out of existance!

An android Sidekick?! PLEASE start that petition now! I’ll sign!! I know it is impossible since Microsoft owns the Sidekick but seriously I wouldn’t be surprised if Microsoft was looking to sell!! So Android should offer a price and see about purchasing!!
November 12th, 2009 at 3:32 am [ Quote ]
Android itself would not buy it. Android is an OS that multiple carriers use. I think the suggestion was for t-mobile/danger/ms to put android on a sk.

I hope they keep the sidekick alive,OS and all. They do need 2 step it up though(remove the apps/games block forcing u 2 buy ****) and add some new features.Reason is that the sidekick is exclusive 2 tmobile no other carrier has it(except foreign carriers).I would hate 2 see the sidekick die b/c I’ve been using 1 since 2004 n I like the ease of use

IM A G1 USER AND I SWITCHED FROM THE SECOND I HAD THE SIDEKICK LX09, IT WAS A DISAPPOINTMENT TO ME… NE HOW WITH AN ANDROID DEVICE YOU CAN NOT JUST RUN G1 STUFF, YOU CAN LITERALLY INSTALL MOTOBLUR STUFF ON IT AND ANY OTHER ANDROID OS OUTHERE INTO THE G1, YOU CAN USE THE MEMORY CARD TO INSTALL THE APPLICATIONS WHICH MEANS OVER 500 APPLICATIONS OR MORE,EVEN USE THE MEMOMRY CARD AS AN EXTRA RAM FOR THE CELLPHONE WHICH MAKES IT EVEN MORE FAST(NOT THAT IS SLOW),OVERALL MOST APPLICATIONS ARE FREE AND FEW ARE CHEAP, AND IF ANYTHING U CAN GOOGLE UP THE APPLICATION AND DOWNLOAD IT FOR FREE, THERE IS ALL KINDS OF SHORCUTS AS THE SIDEKICK, AIM IS BETTER THEN THE SIDEKICK BUT THE ONLY THING FOR MANY SIDEKICK USERS IS THAT IT DOES NOT HAVE THE ABILITY TO GO TO CHATROOMS WHICH WOULD BE GREAT IF IT DID, BUT OVERALL YOU CAN CUSTOMIZE IT WITH THEMES AND BOOTSCREENS, AND THERE IS ALOT OF DEVELOPER COMMUNITIES THAT BUILD THEIR OWN CUSTOM OS FOR THE G1 OR ANY OTHER PHONE IN THE MARKET, IF YOU DONT BELIEVE ME TRY THIS..YOUTUBE “HTC HERO ON G1” OR “MOTOBLUR ON G1” AND YOU WILL SEE THAT ON ANY ANDROID DEVICE YOU CAN RUN ANY OTHER OS AS LONG AS IS LINUX, BUT ALSO THERE IS A NEW PHONE THATS COMING OUT SOON AND RUMORS ARE THAT MIGHT BE COMING OUT WITH TMOBILE IS THE NOKIA N900, THE FEATURES ARE SICK CHECK IT OUT .http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4Uz2hmBiBo .
AND IF YOUR QUESTIONS ARE..IS THE G1 BETTER THAN THE IPHONE YES IT IS, NOT JUST BECAUSE IT HAS THE KEYBOARD BUT ALSO IS FASTER AND MULTITASKS…. WHEN IT COMES TO AIM WHICH IS A BIG ISSUE FOR MOVING TO ANOTHER CELLPHONE, THERE IS A LOT OF DIFF KINDS OF AIMS THAT YOU CAN INSTALL AT THE SAME TIME AND SOME ARE ABLE TO HAVE U SIGNED IN ON MORE THEN 5 SN’S AT THE SAME TIME SUCH AS MEEBO, AND IF YOU DONT LIKE THAT APPLICATION YOU CAN TRY INSTALLING ALL THE OTHER AIMS AND SIGN IN WITH A DIFF SN ON EACH AND THEY ALL WILL BE RUNNING IN THE BACKGROUND. ANOTHER COOL THING IS THAT YOU USE ITS INTERNET VIA USB OR CONVERT THE G1 AS A ROUTER, AND ABOUT THAT 4GB PLAN…ITS BULL$%% I USED OVER 10 GBS AND NOTHING HAPPENED. THE INTERNET AND TEXT IS THE SAME AS A SIDEKICK WHICH IS $35. ALSO YOUTUBE IS A SUPER COOL APPLICATION, IT HAS OPTIONS SUCH AS NORMAL VIEW IF OR HIGH QUALITY WHICH IS AWESOME, IT HAS OTHER THINGS SUCH GOOGLE MAPS WITH 3D VIEW, GOOGLE VOICE IN WHICH YOU CAN GET A FREE LINE AND USE IT AS AN ALTERNATIVE, IT HAS FEATURES SUCH AS WHEN YOU CALL SOMEONE AND WHEN THEY PIC UP THE PHONE WILL VIBRATE WHEN THE CALL IS ANSWERED, ALSO YOU CAN CUSTOMIZE YOUR SOUNDS AND RINGTONES WITH SOUND APPLIATIONS WICH ARE EASY TO USE. I MEAN THERE IS SO MUCH **** YOU CAN DO WITH THAT PHONE IS NOT EVEN FUNNY…BUT ONE THING THE BATTERY DOES SUCK BUT YOU CAN BUY A BETTER BATTERY FOR IT AND YOU WILL BE GOOD.
NE HOW IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUG THE G1 YOUR WELCOME TO HIT ME UP ON AIM, ITS SnkrHD88
November 14th, 2009 at 8:46 am [ Quote ]
That’s not true.
November 14th, 2009 at 8:49 am [ Quote ]
With the Droid, you have to get a SMART PHONE PLAN for unlimited Data which is 29.99!
You have to add on a Select Plan to get unlimited text, pic messaging, free long distance, nights and weekends, free mobile-to-mobile, and 450 whenever minutes. That’s going to be 60 dollars.
November 15th, 2009 at 8:15 pm [ Quote ]
***IMPORTANT***
Did anyone mention the fact that all Sidek!cks are no longer being produced. I spoke with a T-Mo rep and he told me that whole outage kicked them in the a**. So they aren’t making SK’s anymore. If you have one, and its covered by Asurion you’ll “most likely” be given another phone (like Moto-Cliq or G1) if your sidek!ck bites the dust. So there isn’t a Android Sidek!ck in the works….sorry you all :[

Ok…I’m confused…
Perhaps I’m missing something, but the last several times (and currently in a seperate tab) I’ve checked Verizon plans, I see a “Connect” plan that has 450 mins, unlimited text, MMS, and data for $69.99.
Having never been a Verizon customer, or had any chats with any Verizons associates, I cannot say whether a ‘data plan’ needs to be added to partake in the Droid, so clearificated would be appreciated. Though I may go check it out tomorrow for myself.
November 16th, 2009 at 4:48 am [ Quote ]
They changed it the week of the Droid announcement, as I wanted to get the unlimited data/unlimited text plan, which is what I had with t-mobile.
A no-go, I got a call from a sales rep the morning of the release saying I would need to get BOTH voice and data (I think she said that was $70/mo). The data-only plan was not an option now unless you were one of their ‘blessed’ companies. Assumedly it is that way for voice now too as they made a big deal of harping you would need a ‘qualified data and voice plan’ in all of their advertisement’s fine print.
Besides, what is the whole point of getting an android phone if it just has voice? Save yourself some money and get a jitterbug or something because you do not want advanced features.
I cancelled my Droid orders (yes, 2 of them) and immediately bought a Samsung Moment instead. They have a plan for the Deaf community which is comparable (in features and cost) to what I had with T-Mobile.

Umm … I am paying my new carrier $30 for my data plan … the exact same price as I paid t-mobile. Plus it is 20 cents/min for any voice calls, unlike t-mobile which jacked it to 45 cents during this mess. I am paying them 7$ a month more for optional insurance …. but I never had that option with my SK or I would have bought it gladly.
No, I am not going through verizon. They restricted their data-only plan to the ‘chosen few’ corps the week the Droid was released.

I already gave up on my hiptop (sidekick) in Australia after Telstra decided not to offer the 2009, a couple of system crashes and slow slow data speeds. Changed to an iphone 3GS (great apps, terrible battery life) and a new HTC Hero for work.
Both platforms work well, there are free apps that are useful, and the layout can be customised!

i really used to be a die hard sk fan
but right after the release of the sk slide
my eyes were completely open. went back to my iphone and then from there the g1 then back to the iphone lol and now the mytouch3g.
i just really realized how FAR behind the sk is technology wise…sure theyre kinda catching up now but i mean come on!
also the fact that u have to pay for every single thing on that phone…aside from themes, nice little touch to be able to make ur own ringtones and not pay out the a** for it.
still makes me sad to see that M$ is basically running sks/danger into the ground so im sure they wont be around much longer
but ill always have a special thing for em

You have the Connect Plan, which is good.
However, just like the Sidekick, if you want to use data, you have to add on a SmartPhone plan from Verizon Wireless. That allows you to browse the web, download from the App Store, etc.

I have the G1 its closest to a sidekick to me i left the sidekick back when the Lx was the hot stuff because the Android was so new and mysterious and i couldn’t help my self. So i bought a G1 and fell in love. I’ve since returned to a sidekick when the 2009 came out to see what it was about and see all the “change” it made from an 08. the sidekick Lx 2009 had one to many crashes for me and all in all just didn’t feel new enough it still had that same childish sidekick feel ( Real sidekick users that switched and then went back know what i mean ) that I’ve come to hate since using the G1. the sidekick still has a way to go before it can be up with pretty much all android devices.
