Sidekick 3 not limited to T-Mobile?
Josh writes: I was at cingular today and one of the sales people told me that they believe the Sidekick 3 will be available for cingular! The rep went on to say this is due to the fact that the sk 3 will support EDGE technology and t-mobile as we all know, doesn’t support that. Also this speculation would have an interesting correlation with the sidekick roadmap, since they’re unveiling all these different types of sk 3s. Perhaps one is for cingular and another is for tmo! Besides, I know in Los Angeles where I live, when I first turn on my sidekick, the cingular logo shows up. Perhaps tmo and cingular have some sort of contract going on…

Ed Note:
Anyone that has traveled out of Tmobile coverage and gotten bounced to Cingular knows that the Sidekick 2 works perfectly fine with Cingular coverage. Before the comments flood, Tmobile does support EDGE right now, so that point is at least moot. I don’t know the deal with T-Mobile, but I would think Danger would be limiting their possible revenues by only sticking on one carrier.

hmm good point, that would make sooooo much more sense out of the Razr SKIII…if that is even legit, but then again…alot of companies if not almost all of them, have some type of razr phone.
May 3rd, 2006 at 10:28 am [ Quote ]
I dont think its a good idea at all! The sidekick is almost like a trademark of t-mobile here in the states. When someone says sidekick you automatically think t-mobile. I just dont like having a phone that other carriers well… carry. T-mobile as we all may already know is sorta “behind” on phones so sharing thier “MVP” phone with another company would make them just another phone company.

Im bitter sweeet about it..I switched from cingular to tmobile for the sidekick 2…im kinda glad though cause cingular is better then tmobile, service wise

Ok. Is there any highly detailed map of EDGE coverage for a zip code?
May 3rd, 2006 at 11:51 am [ Quote ]
I don’t know if you guys have read recent articles, but T-mobile is in the works to work with EDGE. Also, all the pictures of SK3 that have filtered have had Tmo logo on them. I doubt this will happen. If anything the SK3 might be unlockable so that it can work with any provider on the same Network that Cingular and Tmobile are on (btw, this is why Cingular might show up on your phone during roming or on boot up, because they work off the same network).

Danger has a contract with TMobile stopping them from going to any other carriers.
Site author, you must know this. Your making a post based on a sales rep? We all know about the contract. TMobile only.

Like SidekickStar said….
I too switched from cingular to t-mobile and I think the phones are much better, I love my sidekick and find that I have it 24/7(its an addiction, I know…) (And yess it does charge right next to me when I sleep) so yeah the sidekick 3 would be awesome… But I do hope that it stilll happens to stay with tmobile

T-Mobile DOES operate on EDGE. They are phones are their line now that already use it. Cingular will not be gettng the Sidekick III…it will remain exclusive to T-Mobile. I dont’ know where any ofyou get your information, but all you need to do is look online at T-Mobile.com to see he EDGE phones. Sorry to disappoint you all!

cingular does have some **** phones…i switched from the bootleg sprint to cingular to get the black razr when it first came out cuz NO ONE had it and now EVERYONE has it, i could have stayed with sprint and gotten that new pocket pc…its amazing
thank god my girlfriend had tmobile…

so i think that thats **** puttin the sidekick at cingular cuz the sk is unique they r just a bunch of wannabes ok but ill be a good thing cuz suncom sucks coz im from pr so cingular is the best in puerto rico vut welll

T-mobile has a contrack with Danger Inc. ‘kicks are sold ONLY by t-mobile.
every sidekick i’ve EVER had flashed a cingular sign when i first turned them on. it’s been nearly three years since i got my first sk so i seriously doubt that has anything to do with it.
regardless of all of these things, there’s a contract there between the two companies. it would be STUPID for them to even consider breaking it, they’d get sued out the ***.
May 3rd, 2006 at 3:54 pm [ Quote ]
They also wont switch to Cingular because of the fact that there internet plans are 45 dollars a month and no one will pay that when you can get it for 20 with T-Moilbe

Uhhh, ya. about the whole t-mobile not having EDGE, T-mobile announced last year that they had adopted that technology, and the motorola v330 would be the first to support it. Just letting you all know.
May 3rd, 2006 at 7:40 pm [ Quote ]
I have T-Mobile now, I had the sk2 for like 9 months, was good at first, but then got so fkin sick of it cause gotta pay for the gayest ringtones ( thats so grimey of them ) and the phone kept getting internet outages so I got another phone. But it would be cool if sk3 was available on cingular cause its proven cingular is better service wise but I highly doubt it =\
May 3rd, 2006 at 7:41 pm [ Quote ]
Also, sorry to go off topic here, but will sk3 support java script right away, cause thats another major reason I got rid of my sk2.

in my opinion thats COMPLETE B.S because the Sidekick makes ALOT of money for T-Mobile.. they wouldnt just lose it like that to an other company.. and T-Mobile DOES have EDGE plans. How do you ppl think the new BlackBerry works !?!? ….
May 4th, 2006 at 12:30 am [ Quote ]
they would give up the SKIII for the same reasons cingular gave up the razr
yet, if they are still under contract, (which do we have proof they are?) then that just about pulls the plug on this forum…
…next please

i work for t-mobile and i know i shouldnt be telling u guys this but i have to. the sk3 will be coming out june 6th. thats the official release date. now keep in mind that they keep changing the date. first it was supposed to be released in april but certain things happened, which i am not gonna go into detail about, and they have extended to release date untill june 6th. they have changed the release date a couple of times, but the current release date for now is june 6th….there you have it.

1. T-mobile will never give up the rights to the sidekick. I’m sure they have a huge LONG TERM contract with danger. The sidekick is a staple of tmobile and everyone knows a sidekick is tmobile!
The only reason the razor came out for cingular and then tmobile is becuase the contract was setup that way from the very beginning. Motorola is a huge company and would not give exclusive rights to a phone like the razor. They just get a head start on sales.
2. I was getting a cingular service icon on my slvr and my sidekick and went into tmobile and asked them why to make sure I wasn’t roaming and they said its very common since cingular and att merged, tmobile bought a lot of their existing towers that would have given them double coverage. The towers are designed to say cingular and have not yet been fixed to say tmobile.

Cingular has better, coverage but not better service, and there plans are BAD, I could grap an employee plan, but I prefeer pay my 65 a moth for my sidekick then spend 20 dollars for cingular for a worse phone, cingular gets the sidekick I’ll switch, I switched from sprint, and they are trash, I don’t think sidekick will ever go cingular but if it does I’m ready.
May 4th, 2006 at 8:57 am [ Quote ]
i think that cingular is just to expensive… whos gonna pay 45 a month for some internet im from puerto rico i have suncom cuz the hiptop is exclusive at suncom and its only 20.00$ and the voice plan starts at 30.00$ so if u put those two together so its 50.00$ but mine is 60.00$ so …

Trademarks are irrelevant.
Yes, “Sidekicks” will probably only be sold by T-Mobile.
But Danger isn’t just about Sidekicks. First and foremost, they’re about the software and technology that make Sidekicks possible. They’ve openly stated they want to work with more providers.
There’s nothing to stop Cingular with coming out with the Hipster, or the Hiptop, or the MicroMiniME, or some other device that uses Danger’s server technology. They could even design their own form factor and keyboard.
There’s nothing to stop Cingular from selling hiptops. There’s only a stipulation that they wouldn’t have the word “Sidekick” printed on them.
May 4th, 2006 at 11:02 am [ Quote ]
Stephen’s comment actually makes sense, legally. But we don’t know specific detail of the contract. Tmobile may have rights over certain features such as the swivel screen, the specifics on the keyboard, etc.
can a contract like that be found in public records anywhere?

the sidekick III will be smaller than II. The sidekick II is 5.1 inches long, 2.5 inches tall and the sidekick III will be about 4.7 inches long and 2 inches tall. Im not sure how wide.
This is how i figured it out. I took the picture of the back of the sidekick. I cut the size of the sim card holder and pasted them to fill up the SK. I was able to fit 7.5 across and 2 up. I measured my sim card- 5/8” x 1”. then i mutiplied 5/8 by 7.5 and 1 by 2 and thats 4.7” x 2”

Lets not get it twisted. The current Cingular’s coverage/reception is much better now after it merged with ATT because ATT’s old network merged and Cingular network branded phones were unrestricted on to ATT’s portion of the network so Cingular’s phones could fallback to ATT where Cingular’s old network fail to deliver. T-Mobile always leased and piggy backed from Cingular’s OLD 1/2 reliable spotty network, and that still remains. After Cingular and ATT merged, T-Mobile still doesn’t get access to ATT’s old network from the new Cingular. Unfortunate. T-Mobile will be totally outdated if they don’t invest in their own development as Cingular gets HSDPA which will be even faster than Verizon/Spring EVDO network.

About the SK that is supposed to be released later this year: T-mobile is launching a service later this year that will allow you to use cell towers when you are out and about but when you are at home, your phone will work as an wifi phone (Think: Vonage). Therefore, when you are not in your home you are cutting into your plan minutes/using T-mobile towers but when you are at home and your phone is picking up your wifi signal then you are using unlimited minutes. It is going to be called T-mobile at Home or something to that effect. It will use a special D-Link router that you buy directly from T-mobile. It is going to be an awesome service for people who use their cell phone as their primary line. I believe this is what the special SKs that were featured on the SK “road map” are supposed to be for. T-mobile has a few phones that they will be releasing that will be equipped with this technology.
Also, T-mobile and Cingular do NOT use the same network. In certain areas of the country (IE, North Caroline, South Carolina) T-mobile and Cingular have special roaming agreements that allow them to have unlimited roaming on each other’s towers. This is not everywhere.
T-mobile’s network increased by over 50% last year and they are going to be building thousands of new towers this year. They are number one in customer service (3 years in a row, J.D. Powers) and this year they are aiming to be number one in coverage so all of you Cingular lovers are going to be really disappointed that you signed a 2 year agreement.
T-mobile is looking to do some really awesome things here in the States. As a international company they are number three in the world. Both of the companies ahead of them are Asian, which we all know that the Asian market is cellular OBSESSED. It comforts me to know that T-mobile obviously knows what they are doing, even if Cingular is bigger in the USA. You have to remember, T-mobile is still a baby in the states.

The SKIII will not come out for Cingular. The SK is signature to T-mobile. It has made them extreme amounts of money. Why would they risk losing that customer base? I am sure they will/have already paid what needs to be paid to keep the SK with T-mobile. T-mobile focuses a lot on “brand recognition”. When you see a SK you automatically think of T-mobile. It is just like when you think of coffee the first word that pops in your head is Starbucks. That is T-mobile’s aim.

There seems to be a more than a little confusion about this….
T-Mobile has exclusive rights to the “Sidekick” devices, however, they do NOT have exclusive rights to the Hiptop devices. T-Mobile is NOT the exclusive carrier of Hiptop devices in the US; you can get a Hiptop2 from SunCom in the South, and (until recently) from Edge Wireless on the West coast.
So what’s the difference between a Sidekick and a Hiptop? A Sidekick has T-Mobile written all over it, and a Hiptop doesn’t. That’s all.
Oh, and the Hiptops support MMS, WAP Browsing, and M$N messenger, while the T-Mobile Sidekicks don’t.

In my case, I wanted to get Tmobile service but Tmobile doesnt cover 92325. Sadly that leaves me with no chance of any service but Cingular. too bad really.
I havent seen any other phones that have such a good screen interface. People have recommended the Pocket PC Cell phones but I am trying to keep out of Window OS based phones.
A quandry to say the least.

Look here i am going to tell you how it is, cuz i work for t-mobile cust care in lenexa, ks. i know all the ins and out of it, yes t-mobile has edge capability already we have it in our nokia 6101, samsung t809, MDA, SDA, nokia 6103 (bluetooth 6101), our samsung t509 (comparable to the slvr just made by samsung), motorola v360, and the blackberry 8700 just to name a few. and yes the sk 3 would have edge capability because all the phones t-mobile is selling now has that capability. Also the phone is not coming out no time in june because we have phones already available to us to view that are all the way up until august early september (Q3 better known as) the next couple phones that t-mobile will be coming out with are phones like the nokia 8801, samsung t609 (similar to the t509 but with bluetooth, a nokia 6030 upgrade to the 6010, and some other crappy phones dont nobody want. The sidekick 3 wont be out for a while and if you dont believe me call 1-800-937-8997 or 611 from your handset and ask about the sidekick 3 they will tell you we dont have any info and to visit sidekick.com for further updates and info(which that website doesnt even do anything for you for real. The sidekick 3 will be a phone that will be sold just through t-mobile and t-mobile only but may have the capability to be unlocked like so many other phones unlike the sk and sk2 but the only thing about that is, you have to have t-mobile service to request to have a sim subsidy unlock code haha so yeah thats at least 1 yr or 2 yr of service that you will have with t-mobile, and by then you will like t-mobile soo much you wont leave because you see we have the best cust service out there and our coverage is getting better and better each yr, we put up i think it was like 80,000-100,000 towere just in Q4 of last yr so we are expanding service. and who ever said up there that they work for t-mobile they are lying cuz the sk3 aint coming out on that date, but that number that i told yal to call dont everybody call at once cuz i answer those calls and i need a break haha. Honestly though from someone who had the sk2 and didnt like it, cuz it was too big, pic messaging was ***, only to e-mails but you can log on to the internet come on now, camera was **** and the light never was timed correctly, it was just not a great a phone it could have been but the thing to be looking for is the exact opposites will and should be in the sk3, it will be bluetooth capable, edge compatable, smaller, better camera, and picture messaging capable. BUT HONESTLY THIS IS JUST MY OPINION FROM A T-MOBILE EMPLOYEE, THE SK3 WONT EVEN HOLD A CANDLE TO THE MDA THAT WE HAVE OUT NOW, THE INET IS FASTER, BETTER CAMERA, BLUETOOTH CAPABLE, COMES WITH A MEM CARD (SK3 WONT HAVE ONE) AND YOU CAN PLAY WATCH AND LISTEN TO MOVIES OR SONGS ON YOUR PHONE USING WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER THAT WE ALL USE ON OUR COMPUTERS. MY BOSS HAS ONE AND HE HAS THE FLOYD MAYWEATHER FIGHT ON THERE, A 12 ROUND FIGHT PEOPLE ON HIS PHONE, IN BEAUTIFUL QUALITY JUST LIKE WATCHING A T.V. ITS RIDICULOUS, I AM ACTUALLY WAITING TO GET MINE RIGHT NOW, BECAUSE I DID AN ALTERNATE EXCHANGE FROM MY SIDEKICK FOR THE T809 WHICH IS ALSO A GREAT PHONE. AND UM ALSO FOR MY LAST TWO SENSE, FOR ALL PEOPLE THAT HAVE RAZRS I DO APOLOGIZE CUZ THEY ARE THE SHITTIES PHONES EVER JUST TO PROVE MY POINT WE HAVE A WHOLE SEPERATE TRANS NUMBER AND A DIFFERENT TEAM JUST TO TROUBLESHOOT ALL THE RAZRS PROBLEMS WHATS THAT TELL YOU AIGHT IM OUT YAL ENJOY THE INFO I HOPE.

Cingular’s edge network and data plans suck big time. I’ve worked for Cingular and now T-Mobile. My GPRS speeds with T-Mobile are faster the Edge with Cingular. T-Mobile’s edge blows them out of the water. Danger wants to market their device with a company that provides all around value and a low cost data solution. T-Mobiles cutomer base is perfect for the Sidekick. Cingular’s customer base is not a low-cost but tech savvy crowd. They would try to charge $40 a month for data and not even include text.

our T-mobile district sales rep, informed me that t-mobile wont offer many Edge phones, due to the fact that they are updateing there towers to HSCSD. also that T-moible will be the only carrier at this point to carry the Sidekick. talks are happening with other carriers, however the chances are slim that cingular will be allowed to sell the product.

Again, if Cingular carries it, they’ll most likely call it the Hiptop3, but it’ll be the same device.
Only T-Mobile calls it the Sidekick, so naturally they’ll be the only ones to have it, since they’re the only ones who put that brand on the device.

Ryan, just so you know I was speaking about within the US. I have never been to Europe, unfortunately, so why would I know the ins and outs of their programs? I just know that stats. But seriously, I don’t think I know everything, however I do work for T-mobile. I wasn’t going to say that because you can get in trouble for posting information about unreleased handsets/services. I don’t know everything but I was trying to help and you turned into an a-hole. Thanks a lot buddy.

I would be so happy if Cingular had the Hiptop 3. I have been a cingular customer for years and i since i love their service (had some bad experience with tmobile) i dont plan on changing, im just a little concered that if i get an unlocked SK3 that i will still be able to utalize all the features the SKIII has to offer.
