Hope for the Sidekick still? Rumors of a Sidekick Twist
There are rumors flying all around about a possible Sidekick successor. Both TmoNews and PhoneDog are reporting that there is a new HTC phone in the works codenamed Project Emerald that will be the next Sidekick. No really, like with the Sidekick name not just another phone meant to take the place of the Sidekick. There’s speculation that it will be called the Sidekick Twist, but of course that could change before launch, which people are guessing is “summer”. Of course this is all still rumors, but here’s what TmoNews is saying about the specs on this new device:
[...] we hear the device will boast Android OS 2.1, a 1 GHz Processor (Snapdragon?), with a front facing Camera and a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display. This new device will also be flaunting 16GB of onboard storage with T-Mobile preloaded apps for active lifestyle oriented apps
As most of you know, the name “Sidekick” is owned by T-Mobile, not Danger/Microsoft. T-Mobile can use the name to market whatever phone they want. Previous Sidekicks were manufactured by Sharp or Motorola (the Slide), and this new phone is rumored to be made by HTC. With it running Android, that means no Danger OS and no back-end over the air syncing like in the past. With all of these changes, there’s a big question to be answered: Is it still a Sidekick?

Depends what you mean by “over-the-air syncing”. Android syncs your gmail and contacts with Google servers. Photos stored locally aren’t auto-synced, but there is integration with Picasa that you can choose to use that is synced.
I’ll definitely stay tuned to see how the rumor pans out. T-Mo is gonna have to come up with something exciting this time to keep me from jumping to Sprint & the EVO 4G.

Although there is no backend servers, data like contacts, calendar events, ect are saved to your gmail account and sync.
There are also plenty of applications that allow you to automatically save content (such as SMS/MMS to the media card.. Seeing that the sidekick 08 is discontinued and the LX is only 199.99 WITHOUT a contract…this rumor could be true.
Regardless, microsoft isnt doing so hot in the mobile phone world (as far as social devices). Look at the KIN that verizon received.. one of the WORST designed operating systems I know…. I hope their are other sidekick devices by ms in the future… if not… hopefully HTC can design a overlay on this device to make it simular!!

Danger OS is dead, gone.. bought by Microsoft.. Danger OS is no longer work with Sidekick…
Android is very good!!.. only verison 2.0 & up. my co worker who have Droid.. the verison is 2.1.1 updates.. it’s running amazing!! I tested his phone & download video… it’s very smooth.. youtube are so great!!

If it doesn’t have the familiar “dial” style OS, I won’t be buying it. I don’t care what it calls itself. After playing with my mom’s new Incredible phone, I’m envious of the capabilities but the OS just feels clunky and unintuitive.
Can you imagine the Sidekick style phone, complete with tried-and-true “dial” style OS, with Droid capabilites and a touch screen? I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

Leaving 3G on sucks up the battery more and alot of users on the forum keep 3G off if it keeps going in and out since there is no sense of keeping it on all the time if it’s going to go in and out so they keep it off and let it run on EDGE.

@Magnus: That looks like a MyTouch Slide for AT&T or Sprint, but the keys on it look alot like the HTC Touch Pro 2, the only difference is that the HTC Touch Pro 2 has a 5 row keyboard like the Sidekick does, and this phone in your link has a 4 row keyboard.

@Magnus: No I meant that this phone is probably going to be made for either AT&T OR Sprint! I never said it has Sprint or AT&T on it, I only said that it looks like a MyTouch Slide for either AT&T or Sprint, every carrier has their OWN HTC phone, T-Mobile isn’t the only one that carries HTC Phones. T-Mobile already has two HTC phones that both run Windows Mobile. Verizon I believe has more, Sprint I think also has 2 or 3 HTC phones and AT&T I think only has 1 or 2.

The $10 is just a premium data charge cuz the evo will use gobs of data. Its not just for the 4g per say. Most areas don’t even have 4g. But hey I think its worth the 10 extra. The phone is amazing!! Im paying to get out of my tmo contract and already have my evo preordered thru best buy.

im good Alessa..just trying to pop in when i can to see if there’s any new info regarding this phone..im getting too anxious!..i didn’t have a long experience with the 08 i only had it for like 4 months..but i LOVED it as it did what the 09 does..besides the 3g and video playback…but my experience with the 09 is been ok..like i like the upgrade but by then it didn’t feel up to par with most of the other phones out there…like danger really lagged behind with that…like no wifi you serious? and the horrible keypad that has all but coroted on me..most of the buttons have all but peeled off..its sad! but other then that..thats y im happy htc is behind it..and hopefully they do a good one with this one…super amoled anyone?! looking forward to it!

On the ‘08 they do bubble up but it’s not noticeable until you press a key softly only to see it bubble back up at you, I thought that the frame around the keyboard is supposed to help keep it down, they should have stuck with the Sidekick 3’s keyboard, that Sidekick had the best keyboard to date becaues it was real and it didn’t peel off. I agree that Danger was behind most things but they did have a decent OS.

well i agree the sk3 had the best keyboard..the lx07 and 08 had pretty much the same one and i never had any issues..the 09 had like a rubber buttons so after awhile they literally break apart and peel..some buttons i could barely see the symbols cuz there so ripped up!…thats my only MAIN grip with the 09….before i couldve lived without the 09 and all the trimmings but now i want that…its just standard nowadays…and it was then also..

Cheshire Chess is game program, and this is only for Sidekick.. not iPhone, Nexus One, any phone.. I already checked..
when Sidekick 1st release in 2003… Cheshire program was 1st release around 2005 for sidekick.. and Cheshire upgraded improving game about 3 times since 2003 to 2009…
I love this Cheshire program and it’s the best design, graphics, timers, etc.. it’s so perfect.. many my players agreed.. we have playing over 6 years!! this program isn’t not like other phone!! my wo workers, my family who have G1, iphone, and many differents kind phone and there isn’t like sidekick chess like that! I know, all phone have one chess but only ONE TO ONE network!! and there no setting timer…
Cheshire Chess can play against up to 48 opponents players!!! with program timer.. No limits, 2 min, 10 min, Game timer, Move Timer, Grace Period…

Its cool. Someone alreadly told me. But I found out sumthn else recently. Some minor, or MAJOR insight……….
There is a new version of the G1 coming soon. Its not the G2….they’re calling it the G1 v.2, Codenamed (BigFoot). Its actually all on google if u search G1 Bigfoot. This version is a slide out Qwerty instead of the side screen. Its more rounded with no chin too. It mite be released later this year alongside a Samsung phone called Houdini.
I still believe this is legit but maybe the Project Emerald could be a different device. Just some insight.

@Magnus: The LX’09 has a bigger screen than the LX’07 and the ‘08 and it still has a swivel screen, but I agree that a 4.3 screen would look weird to see it swivel but it depends on how the screen will look, if it looks anything like a standard LX’09 screen but bigger and still swivels then it’s good I guess, but what c0ckmaster said is right about those 3 elements, does Google Android phones have a server like Danger? @Anonymous- I followed tmobile on twitter and im goin to ask them the same question so u can have a witness. But I believe this may be true. All except the “Super” Amoled screen talk, since that tag basically belongs to Samsung. All in all, there are 2 theories here:
1. Danger is making the new sidekick
Or,
2. HTC IS making the new sidekick and will have the viewed specs…..BUT HERE’S THE ONLY DRAWBACK……
If they plan on a summer release, why haven’t there been any concept images?? That’s the only question that makes me skeptical that HTC is making it. If we don’t get any concept pictures by mid-July, then Danger is making the phone and will release it in the fall like the LX 2009. Just my oppinion….any thoughts?

I love the kick just as much as everyone else, I’ve been using one since the sidekick color. I’ve just lost faith. It used to be the best phone hands down now its not even close. I love the qwerty but some of touch screens can do sooooo much more so im willing to give up the keyboard. And if a new kick does surface which I doubt, it would have to have a major overhaul to even be relevent. I just don’t see it happening. But I hope it does.

Insider info. The old Sidekick LX 2009 3g is selling 2 to 3 times more than the KINS. This is done via activation count. End of life-bottom of shelf dated product has more panache than the mass marketed plastic toy KIN. The wildly hated KIN is already moving to the back of VERIZON stores since sales are so poor and 2 heads of MSFT, Robbie Back and Jay Allard were given the boot.
TMobile is also trying to resurrect the Sidekick brand but not use a google OS device, which is part of the myTouch branding. Mostly around the myFaves UI seen on the sidekick and other devices.

Im still looking for concept images too. I was just wondering tho, if Danger is still a live company. I’d really love for them to basically keep the sidekick lx 09 formfactor, but add a touch screen and open up the OS.
-touch screen: notice the scren has black barriers that say “T mobile” on one side, “Sidekick” on the other. Id say get rid of those black outlines and make the whole thing a glass touch screen with G1-scale quality at least.
-Same Formfactor: I’ve been praising the LX 3G’s design for a while. Why not just build on that and add the specified details! Add in a better web browser and upgrade multitasking and its gonna be quite possible the best phone.
-Upgraded OS: I heard the creator of the Android OS was one of the creators of the Danger OS. Both are easy to use, so id accept either. Although I perfer the Danger OS because of its simplicity and unrivaled multitasking. If we see a touch version of Danger OS with better apps and the Download Catalog(the ORIGINAL “App Store!!), this wil be a tough competitor.
One last thing I didn’t mention was the open source platforming of the system and possible built in memory for multimedia. The sidekicks were so locked down, it was damn-near impossible to hack, jailbreak, or root the devices. This needs to stop! Also, built in memory is a must. They need this for music, videos/movies and pictures, among other things. But most of all, KEEP THE DANGER LOGO BUTTONS!!! Cancel, Jump, Home and Back….won’t be a sidekick without it.
HTC Sidekick Twist….I can just imagine a Charles Barkley and Dwyane Wade commercial for that…CLASSIC!!!

Danger OS has got to go. My G1 from 2008 is FAR superior then the LX 2009. Hell, my mom’s 2006 original EnV from Verizon, has more features then the lx 2009.
Danger is just a pretty bland operating system overall, with an extremely crappy download catalog. Don’t get me wrong, I love my LX and LX 2009, but they basically just feel like the same phone, different designs.
Having a Sidekick with Android would be amazing. So many apps and stuff.

@drunkard: You don’t have to agree with me, I have seen so many posts about how much people complain about the Sidekick LX’09 FREEZES on them, and then all of a sudden they get a RED X OF DEATH on their screens and sometimes the device hard-resets when it does that other times it just hangs on there forcing YOU to do the hard-resetting, that is WHY I said that I FEEL that the LX’09 was rushed out of development. One of my friends who had an LX’09 jumped ship to the MyTouch Slide 3G because he was having issues with the device freezing and then the server or the device itself was not delivering his e-mails to his other friends who also have an LX’09. It annoyed the hell out of him but hey the Sidekick doesn’t always work perfect for everyone. I may like the look of the LX’09 but I just don’t like hearing about the problems it has, alot of people that I know tell me that the Sidekick’08 was the last best Sidekick to date and it’s a 2 year old device.

My lx09 has had the red X hard reset like twice or 3 times since I’ve had it. Which to me really doesn’t matter since other sidekicks I’ve had before this one also self re-start. Also, I’ve not had any of the problems so many people say the 09 has. Only big mojor problem I’ve ever had was the big outage which ever one went through. Other than that, my 09 has been great.
I wouldn’t mind a new, improved sidekick though.

Oh yea you can record your own ringtones str8 from the phone, and mind you-you can always switch up the games and apps or whatver u buy whenever u want if u running low on space. Plus everything on your phone is protected with mobile backup online. And I could still go on and on but now im just sounding like a tmobile commercial so im done. The only thing I don’t like about the ‘08 is not having the ability to save your own ringtones that you make on the computer or whatever. @alessandra honestly, if u compare the battery life to a house phone yes it is bad, but comparing it to other phones I think the 09 battery life is decent. I mean, if u watching videos on youtube you have to have it on the charger at the same time or else your battery would die in like 15 minutes flat fully charged. But, I think all phones run out fast now. The size of the battery is a lil bigger that the 08 but I think its slimmer (if that’s what u meant). And yes the phone does freeze sometimes im not even gonna lie but its nothing. When it does freeze i talk to my 09 and say sorry for making you do so much baby go ahead and take your break na j/k but it does freeze sometimes. I know that T-Mobile doesn’t sell the Sidekick’08 battery on their website anymore so it looks like I’ll have to order it through the phone if they have anymore in stock if not then I’m out of luck since I don’t trust 3rd party websites very much.

My Dad uses the dash and he recently had the same problem so I ordered him a battery off ebay. After about a year of using the same battery I guess it wears out. So maybe you should try ebay. I only paid $3.99 for his battery and I think around $7 bucks for a battery for the LX. Its super cheap. All u have to do is type in battery for t-mobile sidekick 2008 and tons of companies selling batteries will pop up. Choose one look at their ratings and your good to go.

@LoSo: Before my battery started to turn into **** (being that it only lasts 15 minutes with just a small amount of usage, or 30 minutes on standby) it used to last me 3 or 4 days on a single charge and now I’m not getting that anymore. A lot of times I can tell when the battery is about to die on my ‘08, the FIRST thing I notice is that my signal completely goes nuts, it won’t stay still unless the battery has enough power to keep the signal still. And while it is warning me that it needs to be recharged, my Sidekick freezes up really bad, but it stops freezing if it’s on the charger. So now it’s pretty useless to use my Sidekick and if a new battery does the same thing then I may need a new phone because this is stupid, my Sidekick 2 and 3 never had battery issues, but this one does. Is it also a lot easier to type on the ‘09 than on the ‘08? I see myself typing with ease on my friend’s LX’07 than on my ‘08 only because the keyboard is smaller on the ‘08.

See, my thing is, tho, idk if it will be called “Twist”…I think that’s the codename. In fact, im certain that’s the codename. Remember, the lx 09 was called the Sidekick “Blade” and the 08 was called Sidekick “Gekko”. Twist is just the name T-Mobile is putting on it to keep the final name under wraps. It mite end up being called sumthn like T-Mobile Sidekick X, but I dnt mind Twist. As long as the swivel screen is still there, its a keeper. Actually, if they remade the LX 09 with an upgraded open source OS (ANDROID hopefully), bigger/touch screen, Wi-Fi, a trackpad instead of a trackball, and the listed specifications that would be quite possibly the best phone created for what its meant to do. Sidekicks are pure messaging phones at the core. With more potential, I believe it would be the best phone on the market considering it has the best keyboard on any cell phone to date.
And besides, Andy Rubin created the Sidekick’s Danger OS. Now just imagine him, new ideas and the Android platform back with his first project. HE MADE WHAT WE KNOW TODAY! Sidekicks run off of him. G1’s run off of him. Droid’s run off of him! Now imagine the potential of the phone……the Danger OS mixed with Android to create a custom interface that would have every company envy-driven to do better.
It all starts with the name. Possibilities are endless

My unlocked sidekick lx ( in which i cant use the internet on in Australia) is broken and i am using dads old phone and have been holding off buying a new phone until a new sidekick came out. and when the sidekick lx 2009 came out the carrier here (telstra) declined it as it wasnt compatible with the servers.
Hopefully this phone comes out with a swivel screen and id be happy, aslong as it wasnt locked on dangers servers like the rest and is able to fully work in australia.

Ok, if im not mistaken, the EVO is an HTC phone. I thought HTC made the phone but its running WinMo. The Galaxy S is Samsungs child. Lol.
About my sidekick concept, im still drawing it, but before I post it, let me break down a in mind image before I let u see it…..
It basically would be about the size of an HD2 (hopefully smaller. I wouldn’t mind a 3.9 inch screen, but hey.). SUPER Amoled is standard.
When the screen is “Twist”ed shut, the device looks as if its solely a touch screen device. When the upper right or lower left corner is tapped, the screen flips up to reveal the 5 row keyboard that’s standard on all sidekicks.
There’s also a trackpad instead of a trackball (because all sidekick owners know how annoying it is when the trackball becomes dirty and unresponsive).
Also is the FRONT FACING CAMERA. Reminicent to the Nintendo DSi, it sits atop the line of the screen, in the middle when the screen is flipped open. There is also a camera on the back of the device.
The rear houses the 4 MP camera with flash. There is also a speaker for speakerphone calls and multimedia support (music, movies, videos, ect.)
Notice the HTC logo and “With Google” on the back of the device. It looks really authentic.
When the device is closed, there is a speaker along the top where the word “sidekick” sits . This is the main speaker used for calling. When the device is open, however, the phone still retains the d-pad speaker. Although, on a final design, they could go the route of the sidekick slide and just make it a normal pad.
On the botton of the device, there is the standard headphone jack and volume buttons, but the power button is now moved to the side of the device to prevent sudden powerdowns.
There would be moorlights like the lx 09, but now they would be customizable. As in, u can wake up to blue flashes, and say goodnight to an overlighted fireworks display.
One ironic change would be Dangers 4 symbols vs HTC’s 4 face buttons. Here’s my breakdown of how they would be set up:
HTC To Danger-
Menu=Menu (3 Lines)
Jump=Home (circle/ bubbles)
Back=Back (Angled Arrow in lower right corner)
*Quick Search=Cancel
*Quick seacrh would be the only button that wouldn’t do its replacement buttons job.
Finally, the phone would have between 16 and 32GB of internal storage. 16gb is standard, 32gb would be the pro model, which comes in a different color scheme and has a different boot screen, along side of other added features. The phone would be able to text in 3 different ways-
1. Hold like iPhone and text one handed while screen is closed.
2. Hold phone sideways while screen is closed and text with 2 thumbs.
3.Traditional Sidekick QWERTY texting with keyboard.
Also, the twist logo would be green. Lol. Since, I keep imagining “u put the like in the coke u nut and twist it al up”….lime green “twist”. Lol. Im silly.

What else do u think needs to be added or would be a good addition, because once I find out how to forward the art to HTC, that’s it.
Im thinking they could do a custom “Sidekick” and Android OS mix. Just so that the interface is familiar.

since May 16th the rumor was spread out abt Sidekick Twist.. the spec. was 1ghz or 1.2 ghz, Super AMOLDED, 4.3 inches & 16GB on board.. this spec. was so hot and high demand.. This is top of the line…

HTC don’t have one.. same above spec….
but HTC Desire have 1ghz and no SUPER AMOLED and no 4.3 inches..

I see this phone happening too. I believe HTC will follow this trend. My reason for believing this is this:
When this info was leaked, nobody believed it because of what the specs showed, mainly the 4.3 SUPER Amoled screen. Some thought it was a term “patented” by Samsung, since the Galaxy S and EVO were the first phones to have them. Now its more of a reality since Motorola will have it on the Droid X. Also, the timing is correct. Most of the time, T-Mobile releases the phones in the summer. I say, the phone leaks in the next week or 2, by mid july, the phone is officially announced and by the end of August, its released right around back to school time. August 27 to Sept 2 maybe?
And, hopefully it has the only thing us True Sidekick users want: a true QWERTY keyboard with the signature swivel screen. I guess now its gonna be the “Signature Twist” screen. Oh and hopefully the battery is improved too. I heard the LX 09 battery was dreadful with 3G on or using net capabilities.

See my thing is, only if it has a swivel screen. If it has a slide qwerty, its probably gonna look like the htc desire. I have a strong distaste for basic slide qwerty phones. And my hate for slide phones started with….hey, whatddaya know, the SIDEKICK SLIDE! That phone was terrible.
But, more to the point……HTC just needs to stay true to the form factor. They would be the fourth manufacturer of sidekicks so they have to come out strong.
This would potentially move sidekicks from smartphone to superphone, and T-Mobile’s top of the line device.

Hey dude, PROVE IT! The EVO is a Samsung phone if im not mistaken. Or HTC? I don’t know.
But its not the EVO. I guarantee it. Sprint has that phone locked. Why would they bring they’re best device to another competing company? Like if the HD2 went to Sprint. That would be stupid on T-Mobile’s part.
Sprint is keeping the EVO for their network. Does T-Mobile even have 4G yet? Im not sure. But all in all, T-Mobile has the HD2, Sprint has the EVO 4G.
The reason why its the Twist is because, I think Samsung did manufacture the EVO. That would mean, like ma man Magnus said, HTC would be the only phone maker without a device with the now popular 4.3 inch screen, SUPER Amoled screen, 1.2ghz processor and 16gb internal storage.
All in all, its not going to be the Evo. The T-Mobile Sidekick Twist. Damn, it sounds pretty **** too.

Of course, they’d have a long way to go to bring it up to speed, but one never knows. This all is great news. But something just made me think…..what if this isn’t a sidekick? Like, im all for this and the idea of this megaphone coming to such a deserving carrier is a grand idea. But, what if its not a sidekick? Meaning, what if its not called a sidekick and there were never plans to call it that? The phone would still be phenomenal, but in all respects, it would be sort of a letdown.
I think that if this doesn’t become the Sidekick Twist that we’re asking for, Danger and Sharp may do another Sidekick. People say Danger is dead, but they must have some heads there if they worked ok those horrible Kin phones. It can happen.

Well what could be a possibillity is that tmobile couldve made a deal exclusively with HTC to build a “sidekick like” device..so in doing so they can make a phone that has it’s similiar look and feel but also have andriod as the OS..Sharp has nothing to do with making another sidekick as they don’t have the rights..and just a manufacturer..and Danger won’t be able to make anything close to a sidekick as MS runs them and won’t allow it..and if they did..im sure it would breach contracts and they could possibly get sued for trying to make a similiar device…

I can tell you that the mytouch slide is a great replacement for the slide being a long time sidekick user and it makes up for most of the features on the sidekick with incredible upgrades.
Ex. Messaging- i know most of you sidekick handlers has always had a issue with the 100- 130 message capacity. Well with the mytouch slide that is pretty much history. It also better organizes the messages btw whom ever your texting with.
Ex. Pictures- Pictures on the side were indeed nice and clear but zoom was an issue along with the clarity of far picture taking. With the slide zoom is made available and the pictures are clear given the 5 mp camera. giving you more control and customization with each picture you take.
Ex. Games and Apps. – The sidekick had the app games and ringtone store available but the price for all that was way too great. those less than 15 sec. ringtones always killed and the game were very short and easy. with the slide, Android makes it possible to have multiple interesting games, custom ringtones and other great apps to use and most of them are free. that’s right FREE.
In short i’ve never been happier with my phone

I didn’t see anything except an article posted that basically was describing how the “G1″ was “locked to T-Mobile and will be marketed my Google and T-Mobile only”. That’s what I was saying. Lol. I was like “huh? This is a G1 post!” I mean, I still have hope that Emerald is a Sidekick device, and I just pray that it is. 4.3 inches is not that big for a twist screen.

Is the HTC Vanguard out yet? One of my friends buddies had a phone that looked EXACTLY like the one in the pictures.same color, keyboard, T-mobile branded and all. Only thing was that I didn’t get to hold the phone. I seen it from a 2-3 foot discance.

I just asked if he knew what was happening with t-mobile and the sidekicks and that’s all that he knew.
