More Sidekick 2009 FCC Docs Leaked
Oops, looks like the FCC posted some docs they shouldn’t have! Remember those FCC docs from Option N.V. that I posted awhile back? Well it’s been confirmed that they were part of the new Sidekick. The FCC has posted some additional documents today that confirm it’s part of the Sidekick 2009. They even include some tasty illustrations of the assembly of a new Sidekick. In addition there’s also info on the chipset they’re using, Qualcomm’s MSM7200A and/or MSM7201A. These are the same chipsets that a bunch of recent phones run on including the G1, HTC Magic, and the upcoming HTC Touch Diamond2. Looks like at least hardware wise MSDanger is going to drop a phone that competes directly with the new Android devices. If you want the nitty gritty details straight from the FCC filings, here you go:

This isn’t a leaked file, or mistake. today is 4/13, the day that the option NV docs would be released from the confidentiality agreements. DUH…..
If you read the request on the original filing it says it expires 4/13.
So the illustration basically killed my dreams of a touch screen UI. No touchscreen.
I was surprised by the super small battery… You may need to buy 5 of these to last through the day, and a desktop charger to keep charging them….

My lx needs 2 batteries to get through a full day. One battery gets me 10 hours. With moderate usage. If I’m having a boring day, and I’m surfing the net , and taking a **** load of pics, and using the mp3 player, I get 5 hours.
This new kick has 3G, which will hog all the power.
Not to mention the better screen at full brightness.

And yeah mike. Most likely u will be paying 35 bucks when u upgrade and it will be a whole new level of data plan.
Just like u can’t get tzones for $5.99 on a G1..
For the extra $35. Might as well go iphone, Black berry, or G1/G2

I look at it this way.
If the plan remains at $20 for current customers will give it the 14 day test.
If it goes up to $35, I’m prolly going to go with the next android, or wait till june for the new iphone and jump to at&t.
Why pay $35 for sidekick unlimited data and text, and I still have to pay for ringtones, games and applications.

Well something else that looks rather interesting is the fact that there is a mood led guide, leaving the possibility of moodlights or a type of alerting leds for the device. not necessarily blue, but leds that have some sort of alert function. Moodlights will live on in 5.0!

Well I finally went and did it…I got the G1 after tons of consideration. Been with the sidekick family only since the SKII. My only reasons for finally jumping ship is the new rate plan. Although my data was 20 buckaroos, I believe it will not be grand-fathered for the new kick…so I just felt like I might as well get another phone that has free apps. Honestly it was a tough decision but I am very satisfied with my G1 and I am not a “fangirl” for the G1 or anything it was just logic that made me take the plunge. I still believe the Sidekick’s Download catalog will essentially be the same and I just personally kinda got sick of it.
This new kick sounds awesome I will surely be at a T-mobile store to check it out.

If your currently paying $20 for data and switch to the new sidekick you won’t be put on the new $35 data plan. Your plan carries over. I’m not sure why they started charging more but my guess would because of their new 3g frequency.

Honestly, getting bumped to $35/mo isn’t that bad, since you’d be getting a full upgrade from EDGE to 3G. I think it’s pretty reasonable. I do, however, hope they start to wise up about the download catalog. There just isn’t enough variety these days, and the prices are a bit on the high side, especially with the monthly app fees.
Even though I’m not much of an iPhone fan, I definitely think the app store is a good example of how big a catalog should/could be. (Not to say that I want that huge of a catalog… a lot of the App Store content is total ****)

The deciding factor for me is the data pla. If I’m grandfathered into 20 dollars a month ill definetly stay with the sidekick. However if I end up having to pay more which is completely understandable I will probably move onto a new device after 5 years of having a sidekick.

ok and one more thing, while im on a rant, im really really glad that they decided to continue to go with sharp instead of changing to another manufacture for the kick. sharp makes some pretty good stuff but i think they dont get the credit they deserve. the slide is a total waste of a phone. it had problems when it launched and it doesnt feel like a sidekick. the whole purpose of a sidekick is to have a great keyboard (the slide does not) and to swivel out (another thing the slide does not do) and to be comfortable in the users hand. forget motorola. they are totally h-0-m-0 and you can tell them i said it.

Fcc legally has to make these documents available after the confidentiality period is over.
The period is set in place so other manufacturers don’t try to steal the concept and compete against the filing company.
It is our rights as americans to know what type of radiation is being emitted from the device, that’s why the fcc acts as the regulatory body.
Without set limits, people would be dying of cancer and suing the companies.
Also fcc regulated wha frequencies companies use, so as not to interfere with other things like aircraft, and military operartions.
Anyway, I got a feeling this kick is gonna suck a$$.

Actually it was just it wasn’t about waiting the 30 days, my sidekick got really crappy reception in my apartment…like it would drops calls like way too much..since having my G1 I haven’t had one dropped call. I will check out the new Sidekick when it drops but more than likely I can honestly say I am more than satisfied with my G1. It is just a Sidekick on steriods IMO.

FAct I dont think that they will release a new data plan for 3g sidekick. I think they made it higher to deal with the new 3g network. So 35 a month will be the 4g network.
Now hopefully if 35 is 3g then 20 a moth will be 2g
and we will be able to use the new sidekick 09 with a slower connection. atleast this sounds like they not loosing there customers and maintaining there fast connection with new customers and new buyers. sounds like this could be the plan to me

What do you think about the sh*tty battery life. When I tested the G1 for 14 days I got 5 hours max on battery, with wifi, and gps off.
Concerning data plans, there is no 4G in the works for tmobile.
And it makes perfect sense, you will have to upgrade to a 3g data plan, just like you can’t get tzones on a G1 or on a blackberry

Well Honestly at 1st it sucked but like training the battery I must say actually worked. This was the 1st time I saw that written in a MANUAL….it was strange because usually people tell you to “train your battery” but to read it in my G1 manual was kinda funny lol. It does really work. I get up and I am out of the house by 5am…home around 2pm and I have about half battery life. I text and email a lot through out the day for work.
Also another thing that I noticed was that when my G1 started loosing battery life I still had hella juice left. It shows you that you don’t but you really do…with the sidekick the exclamation marks comes on and you have to run to the charger lol…with my G1 you have about 40 mins or so with straight usage.

Buy the applcations in the catalog. I think they are like $5.99
I bought a cheap excel viewer for the LX, but it sux!
If you frequently work on spreadsheets, etc, I suggest you wait for the new tmo wing2 or the new dash. Supposedly running 6.5 windows mobile pro.
Personally, I had the wing for a bit, and it was very prone to crashing. Hopefully they improve the wing2.

Crazy why don’t you just change phones if you don’t like the sidekick you may have signed a 2 year contract that doesn’t mean you have to keep the sidekick for 2 years.. Im sure there’s a phone you can use. Your always talkin about iphone get one unlocked.. I personally have 2 phones had a sidekick on one line since the original sidekick and another phone which I constantly change on the other line.. Hence I can keep the sidekick for the pros and use the other phone for the sidekicks cons.. Currently I have the 8900 on my second line which kind of sucks well internet wise its a lot slower then the sidekick… but like I said I change that phone all the time..

I have 5 lines on my family plan. So I can’t add another line.
A few of them are free from contracts , while some others are not.
Plus there really isn’t anything I like right now.
But now I have to get out of this phone. I will try the new kick next month, I’ll try it for 14 days. If it sux I’ll wait for g2. If that sux, then I might have to pay the termination fees, and move to another carrier.
I’m the type of person that likes new technology. I waited so long for kicks to finally get bluetooth, and the sk3 got it very late.
I have to have a 3G phone, with customizable everything, and large support for apps.
I have been playing with my friends storm at work, and it is getting more and more apps everyday. And supposedly they are improving the keyboard and adding wifi in the next unit.
And I have to have this by this summer.
I’m sick of carrying around my ipod touch, and looking for wifi.

we dont really have a problem in houston with wifi service. pretty much everywhere there are mass groups of people there is wifi. sometimes its in the resturants or shopping centers the library. its pretty much everywhere. it sux that you live in a place where wifi is hard to find dude.
im not getting involved in this mess that all you people are in on. i came here to talk about the kick. i like the kick. its a nice phone. i want to know what others think and how others feel about the phone that i like. when i first got mine i didnt like it. i thought it was over rated. then i had to use it and i fell in love with it. now i have had more kicks than anybody i know. every time one comes out i go out and get it. if i cant get it in the colors that i want i customize it. i get the wal papers that i want. i work on my kicks all the time. i have 3 lx’s, 1 sk2, and 2 sk3’s. i have so many from having to replace them when i mess them up. my favorite one is the lx. its the best kick ever made. the browser is the best. the keyboard comes from the sk 2 which was the best one, the sound qualirty is a little better, the whose sidekick experience is just better with the lx. the sk3 was the same as the sk2 except it was shaped different and the keyboard was ****.
now. how do you guys feel about the kick?? i want the new one. i will be keeping this kick thing going. i was thinking of dropping it all together and getting to know the iphone but i dont want to. i dont need it. i can just get a ipod touch and use it for the wifi and the mp3 player. it will save some battery life on my kick if i get an ipod touch for music instead of killing my kick when im in the car or when im shopping in the grocery store or for whatever reason i use my music player.

Another thing I wanted to mention is that 3g is not that much faster IMO over Edge. Having the G1 I notice that it is good but don’t be surprised about 3g not being as fast as you think…wifi is ofcourse faster than all but seriously guys 3g isn’t THAT MUCH of a difference…and with T-mobile’s network it depends on your dead spots (I am in the San Francisco bay Area) also we all know as kick owners/users we always have outages… but paying $35/month is sort of expensive but at the end of the day you just gotta get your moneys worth so text, email, and surf the internet!

I do agree with Chanty. People who recently (and who do until May 13th) bought a Sidekick 08 or LX are getting screwed by paying $35 for 3g capabilities they won’t be able to use.
As for Tico NYC’s rant, I’m sorry, but none of it made sense. If we do not manage to get grandfathered in, they’re not going to somehow limit your the ‘Blade’ to using only a 2g/EDGE connection (to my knowledge, I could be wrong…). So, $35 or $20 (or $55 w/o voice plan), the Blade will have 3g depending on if your area is covered.
As for the lovely argument Crazy and Anonymous had, I agree with both of you. Anonymous is correct in that we don’t need the constant negativity, but Crazy can comment as much as he wants, and he is correct that our beloved Sidekicks are usually (always) ‘behind the times’ when it comes to technology. HOWEVER, you could indeed be more “classy” by not using so much foul language, Crazy.
Now, back to the ‘Blade’. The memory upgrade is a LOT better than the LX, but not to the level I was hoping. But I’ll wait til I get my grubby paws on it and give it a whirl. I am also worried about the battery, but as stated by someone somewhere before, newer processors are more energy efficient, so hopefully we won’t need 40 batteries to last through a day of moderate usage. Fingers crossed!
Lastly, I will admit there is one phone that is peaking my interest (more memory, slightly bigger screen), but it’s not the iPhone or a ‘touch screen only’ phone because like most of you, I need a nice full qwerty keyboard to text at an accelerated rate.

I hear ya, I will also give the new kick a 2 week test. There must be something they aren’t telling us.
I hope to god that they free up the custom capabilities, and open up the catalog for free apps.
The reason why G1 and iphone are doing so well is because of the app store.
The good move they are doing is offering the new kick in the pink color. My girl is gonna beg me for it.
I will say I love typing on the kick, I type sooooo fast. The G1 keyboard is not as responsive. And the keys are too flat.
As for the battery power, hopefully the new netbsd integration will be less taxing on the processor, whihc by the way is the same qualcom chip as the g1…. giggedy giggedy.
If microdanger is smart they will, open the customization options and revamp the app store, to that of the iphone and g1, Then and only then will I be happy to pay $35 a month, (but no reoccuring fees)
Till then, I’m counting down the days to the 13th. In fact I already requested it off from work!!!!!!!!

The mms’ are tied to the data side, danger’s servers for internet and backup.

If you never shut the data plan off I would dispute it.

nah i`ve had the 3 since feb 07 &. whenever someone sent me an mms it directed me to a website. but never charged me. but i went to the lx in nov 07 but never noticed. i noticed like june 08 that i was getting charged. but it would be like .30 cents cuz i rarely mms. but still. why one rep tell me i have it &. another say no?

Chanty, when you upgraded from the SK3 to the LX, they should have upgraded your data plan to the one with MMS. The SK3 data plan was $20.00 and did NOT have MMS and when the LX was released there was a new data plan to go along with it, which is $19.99 per month and DOES include MMS. On your bill which amount does it show for the Sidekick data plan, $19.99 or $20.00?

in 2007, (the year I got the LX,) it was still a decent phone. But now it is behind the times. This new kick will bring it up to speed.
But to pay for ringtones and for apps that should be free is dumb. Hence the reason why I’m leaving if they don’t improve it.
If you read the poll comments you will see that many many others agree with me. It may be time to move on, if danger/tmo doesn’t get a move on with the new kick!

im with crazy on that one. i feel like i have been paying for the stupid ring tones for long enough. its stupid that we have to pay for them and virtually no one else does. i have had phones that are not nearly as useful and are way better when it somes to personalizing them. like making a background without having to nearly hack the d-a-m-n thing, or making a piece of a song i like my message tone when i get text messages. i should be able to record something with my computer using audacity and make it a message tone. something silly like “incoming text motherf*cker!!!!” lol. or whatever i want. i have done it before and sent it to my friends as a bluetooth. it was fun. but now with this kick i cant do that anymore and it stinks. it really stinks. now that i have all my friends doing it i am out the loop with the little things like that. i am the one that got them started on it and now they are the ones sending and trading the silly home made message tones and ting tones. the point im making is that i shouldnt have to be a programmer to be able to do this for free. and its not that i cant afford the ring tones. i actually can and its not that big of a deal but the fact that they are picking at me for small amounts each month for ring tones that should be free is just wrong. lol.

I also live in the corporate world, and I’m ashamed of pulling my phone out in a board meeting. Instead I use my touch on the company wifi for my outlook email, and to access my desktop from a meeting.

i know that some people will want to come down on me for saying that the sidekick is a “smart phone for kids” but before you attack me for saying that, on the sidekick site, i want you to do a little online research. look at the price of a sidekick lx. you already know what it does, then go look at the latest treo and the g1 and their prices. those phones are “real smart phones” by the… i dont know…. “smart phone standard” (i guess). look at some of those other phones like the samsung instint, and the nokia nseries of phones. we are paying top dollar for a phone that doesnt even let you take a pic and make it a background?? you cant even use the songs that you have on it as ring tones?? it wont download other mobile browsers like opera?? come on!! you cant be serious. the phone is aimed at kids and we all know it. but the fact that it has the capablities to appeal to a mass market with the easy to use interface makes it a shoe in for those that like simple interfaces. its far easier to use than windows mobile and is in a position to compete with the iphone because of the user interface and it has a backend that frees up alot of space on the internal memory!!!! this is babanas. its being wasted!!!! i have some apps waiting for me on the server for me to download whenever i want. i can uninstall an app and free up space on my kick then call it back if i need it. i dont even need to keep the map on my phone if i dont use it often. i can just uninstall it and call it back if i need to take a trip of if i need to look up an address. thats the $h!+!!!! who else offers such a service?? nobody!!! but im getting off the subject here. the point im making is that there is so much more potential for a far greater phone than any other phone on the market but… what do we get?? “a smart phone for kids” instead of what it could be.

maybe i should just get the stupid IPtouch. i dont really want to but its looking like a better and better idea all the time. it would be nice to be able to log into my desktop and remotely work from anywhere else but my desk. even if its something as simple as writing service ticket for our clients. i can do that while im on the toilet. lmao. no need to stop working just because of bio calls. lol. but seriously, i will look into getting a cheap used ipod touch to see what its like. if i dont like it i will just give it to my fiance or one of the kids from my old hood. i always give them stuff. they look at me as “the guy that made it” for some reason. im not rich or nothing like that.

dude i get all kinds of weird looks when i pull out my kick. i dont know why i even use this thing in public. its cool when im not at work because any place im at is ok to have a side kick. but man, i wish i could some how shoy you what its like when i pull this big, clunky, almost useless thing out, at a confrence meeting. Thank you Gizmo!!!!!!! That’s what I’ve been saying for the longest. If the Sidekick becomes opened source & everything, it will blow the Iphones, G1s & Blackberries out of the water…..BUT they market the Sidekicks to teenyboppers. Lol. It’s good to know that I’m not the only one. Lol.

ahh ! guess whattt ! i`m at t-mobile &. i asked a representative about my txts. she said she can`t open it since it`s an old plan. but w/e.
i said if i go to a g1 i go to the $35? she says yes. so i asked a silly question, “so if i go to an 08 will i go up to $35/month?” she said no you`re grandfathered in to the sidekick.
which means we most likely WON`T get increased. unless .. sigh. the 3G. i got my hopes up just now. argh ! :[.

Thanks for the input. In a perfect world I’d love the SK to run Windows of some sort. Makes it tough though, because I’m just STUCK on the sk’s keyboard, redundant command key’s and other convenient features.
