Project Pink Delayed

It ain’t easy… being Pink. Techeye is reporting that Microsoft’s Project Pink phones are going to be delayed until sometime in April. The reason for the delay? “issues with the European models and roll out,” but that’s not to say there’s anything wrong with the phones which are already done and ready. There’s just some stuff to work out with carriers.

It’s looking like they’ll be available on Verizon here in the states and Vodafone in the UK. Originally there was talk about unveiling the Pink phones (Turtle and Pure) at CeBIT but now it’s looking like Microsoft is going to throw their own events to herald the arrival of the Pink phones and they’re willing to shell out big bucks to make sure it’s something significant..

Wait im confused…I thought the project pink was supposed to replace the sidekick line?? Is that not true or what? Why are we being updated on this information? I would think if it was the replacement it would be available on t-mobile. So again, im confused!

If you think of the phone with the screem I looks like the G1 w/o the chin throw that glossy look onto it and use the material used for the SKLX07 Battery cover this phone has promise

I meant thinka the phone with the screen down

sidekickchick27 – We don’t know for sure. MS has said that the pink phones are a follow up to the sidekick. That doesn’t really tell us anything about what “follow up” means, it could just mean it’s a win mo phone targeted at the same customer demographic or it could mean an update of the platform in some way.

Also keep in mind that “sidekick” is T-Mobiles branded name. Danger has ALWAYS called the devices and platform the “hiptop”. So any phone not on TMo won’t be a “sidekick” but could still be the same basic platform. Although it has also been rumored that there are both GSM and CDMA versions of the new devices, though rumors also point to the GSM version being for overseas as the only rumored carrier in the US is Verizon.

So the best guess at the moment is that yes, project pink is replacing the existing hiptop platform but it seems unlikely that T-Mobile will be carrying the new device (no one has found the GSM version in the FCC docs as far as I am aware, which adds to the idea that the GSM version is for outside of the US). In that sense, the sidekick as we know it today will be going away.

Bullshit!! Im just gonna rock my sidekick till the screen falls off!

  8. Some Guy Says:

That’s certainly an option… as long as they keep the backend service running (which I would think they would for awhile at least, even if the LX 09 is the last sidekick on TMo’s network). Of course, should Danger/MS turn off the backend at some point in the future, existing SKs will no longer have data service.

I hope t-mobile teams up with sharp and some other company to make a real future sidekick with everything tht everybody wants and still have the best imin services as the sidekick and with good querty and good touch screen and name tht sidekick cause the sidekick name belongs to tmobile and jus them so I think they can team up with sharp and another company to make a better phone and name it sidekick

Anon- I think T-Mobile has been trying to do that with the various android devices (though without the sidekick name). There’s more than a few out and more on their way (T-Mobile seems to be advertising and pushing them like they used to do with the sidekick). I’ve never found a keyboard as good as the SK, myself though, so I’ll probably end up doing what derald is as long as the MS/Danger keeps the service running (I’ll reserve judgement on the “pink” devices until we see what they’re really like, though the leaked images aren’t terribly promising).

    bulletinyochest – grow up.

Have you ever tried the keyboard on the Window’s Mobile Touch Pro2?
Vastly superior than the Sidekick’s IMO, and it’s a more powerful phone.
