Sidekick 2008/Gekko vs Sidekick 3
There are quite a few of you out there still hanging onto the Sidekick 3, and wondering if it’s time to upgrade to the Sidekick 2008. Well, here’s our opinion, toss yours in the comments:
If you’ve been sticking with a Sidekick 3 (or one of the older devices) then it’s time to upgrade. Take our word for it, you’ll love the higher resolution screen and won’t be able to go back. There’s video playback and recording. The new features in the browser (full page mode) and some new OS tweaks (Quickfind, new address book behavior, etc) are very handy to have. The keyboard may take some getting used to, but in our opinion it’s better than both the 3 and the II keyboards. And at $150, chances are you’ll be able to score a deal somewhere and get it super cheap. There’s no official word from T-Mobile, but we won’t be surprised to see this device eventually offered for $50 (or even maybe free) with a 2 year contract.

Now that the Sidekick 2008 is out i really wanna get it.
only problem is i dont think it will work on Fido network in Canada

SK3 user here.
I love my 3, but it’s finally starting to die on me. The screen feels like it’s gonna fall off with every flip, the trackball button doesn’t work, and I can only get a day’s use out of the battery. Granted, I use the thing pretty much all day while at work, but yeah.
I had a 2 before getting the 3. And when the LX came out, I looked at it and the first thing I notice….. The craptastic flimsy keyboard from the 2 is back. Which was an auto-nosale for me. At least until people had it for a while, and then I’d see if it would hold up.
I will admit, the Gekko has me intrigued, but I’m still on the fence. Honestly, SideKick’s period have kinda turned me off as of late, but that’s a different subject. I just wish T-Mobile would get off their butts and rollout 3G already. Sprint/Verizon/ATT have, why not T-Mo? And with the way I use a cell phone, having 3G DOES make a difference to this consumer. Now that my 2 year contract from the SK3 is up, I’m shopping around. I’d get an iPhone2, but the lack of QWERTY keyboard is a turn off. Voyager looks nice, with the TV and all, but I test drove the V-Cast system and hated it. Then there’s the Instinct, but I’m turned off by Sprint’s crazy pricing for bills.
I keep coming back to my SK3 is my “idea phone, minus a couple things.”
Those couple things: YouTube, AIM Chat Rooms, stereo bluetooth for MP3 listening, using MP3’s as ringtones.
I know SK’s don’t work with YT yet, and I read the Gekko finally incorparates stereo bluetooth, (yet, in the same thread, someone mentioned the Gekko NOT have a MP3 player at all?) and I don’t think we’ll ever see personal ringtones on a SK. So my only real question, for anyone that might have a Gekko; Can you FINALLY enter a buddy chat with your friends on AIM? Or is that still not happening.
Also, the keyboard on the Gekko. Isit more like the 3, with the hard plastic casing with hard plastic buttons; or more like the 2/LX with the flimsy rubber? I know the buttons are smaller, which is bad enough what with my giant thumbs…. But I guess that’s my problem there… lol
Seriously though…. Please T-Mobile, catch up to your competition and make with the 3G already.
If I do end up getting a Gekko, it’ll probably be with a 1 year contract, on the off chance that they release a current gen SK next year.

you can enter chat on the gekko/2008 and on the LX, when you’re at your buddylist press menu+shift+j. didn’t know about it when i had a sk3 so it could still work for you. it might only be for sk users though so anyone you want to chat with who doesn’t have one cannot join. and as for the buttons they are like the LX and 2, i also prefer the hard plastic buttons just for ease and quickness of typing but i’ve gotten use to the new ones. hope that helps.

The screen is the exact same size, but with a higher resolution and better quality display, which results in more crisp images and viewing.

umm the really isnt a diiference n the battery for the 2008 and lx…the battery even though the 2008 iis smaller iit has the same standby time of 6 hrs…..the onlii diiference is that the talk tiime for the 2008 is 5 hrs n the lx is 6 hrs

The $149 price is a little of a hoax in my opinion, bought this device for my wife yesterday, with a 2 year contract you will pay in store $199.99+$18 (“upgrade fee”) +tax which in my state ads up to $239 now the $149 is derived from the $50 mail in rebate, BUT you have already paid tax (and upgrade fee) on the “full” $199.99 price so you’re really NOT getting $50 off. For me it works out to $239.99 (-$50 mail in rebate) so $10 shy of a hundred more than the “advertised price” out the door price, and at the end of the day the price is really $189.99 !

honestly ive tested every single sidekcik since the original 1 even before it had color. the sk 2 for a while was considered the best functional sk even wen the 3 released and i think tmobile wanted to go back to a phone that was very function able like the 2. went he lx came out it was a great phone because of the high resolution screen and it wasnt jus a phone in which people bought because of its looks. the d pad and buttons along with the ability to send pictures and sure the web faster was a huge factor and a plus for it but it still felt like it lacked in some way. the tony hawk lx is a very good phone because it has the ota already built in to your sidekick so it’ll work different on the tony hawk instead of the lx in a better way. BUT for me i will be purchasing a tmobile sidekick 2008 because ive followed it for a while n the that who also has followed it as me knows that it is the successor of the sk id NOT THE LX…IF IT WAS IT WOULD BE MORE MONEY AND HAVE MORE EXPENSIVE PARTS INSTEAD OF SHELLS…the only difference in both the lx and 2008 are that the lx has betta parts spent on making it look good..they both have similar software. i jus need a sk thats gonna do anything i want that the lx dose and be a little cheaper and thinner to carry around cuz i will purchase a 4gb memory stick for music on it…one thing that i have noticed on the 2008 that is a lil sad is that it dosent have its own pouch yet or tmobile will send a pouch eventually

i have a sidekick 3. the reason why t mobile sucks is that if i were to get a 2008 i would have to pay 300 dollars because i dont qualify for an upgrade until november. it pisses me off that i cant even get the same offers as new customers if by extending my contract now or something. i’ve been a sidekick user since november 2004, they should be giving it to me for free for being such a loyal customer. if i extend my contract i would get it for 250 dollars plus i guess the upgrade fee…. what kind of cutomer service and reward is this??

I have a sk3 and I’m still on the fence. Though I like the sk08, I just don’t feel like this phone is really worth the $200 or $250 (plus tax & upgrade fee) it’ll cost me with an upgrade. Not to mention they’ll probably release another, even better sk in a few months.
On top of all of that I just read on BGR that T-Mobile might be launching 3G October 1st! Welp we’ll see, maybe if I have some extra money but with gas, groceries and everything else going up except my salary, I doubt it lol.

I had a SK3, but when the LX came out, I upgraded. I’m very happy with the LX and I think that going to the SK2008 would really be a downgrade. It’s basically the successor of the iD, and the only thing that’s really appealing are the interchangeable cases. The 2008 looks really dinky, but then again, I have only seen it in pictures. I was happy with my SK3 and still use it occasionally, but if you’re still on your 3 maybe the 2008 would be an update, but the LX is still best. If you’re looking for a new sidekick, get the LX – it’s sleeker and nicer than the 2008 is, and a nice update from the 3.

krisnwo420 and Fiyah: tmobile is rolling out 3g on october 1st. the flagship 3g phone will be a sony ericsson bella. and the next sidekick is coming out in december, which will be the lx successor. as far as a 3g sidekick, it wont be any time soon. i heard maybe a year or more.

Yeah, I heard the successor to the LX is coming out in December and that’s what I’m waiting for. Well my 2 years is up in March so I’ll probably wait until then to get it so I can get at least a little discount lol.

Well, yesterday went to the store to test the phone, its a nice phone, much smaller and very light then the LX… The screen is a little bit smaller then the LX Version.. My wife may upgrade from 3 to 2008… I have LX and I don’t have much of a discount lol since I recently upgraded my phone with in the last 22 months so only price they can give me is $249 which SUCK lol my wife can get a $100.00 which brings it down to $149.00 after rebate **** blah blah.. and now they charge a $18.00 upgrade fee??? lol

I just ordered the ‘08. Can’t wait! I’ve had the following devices: Sidekick 2 (3 of them), Sidekick 3, LX, and currently the Blackberry. I thought I was over the Sidekick but I miss it so much and think the Sidekick is stuck in my heart forever. Nobody beats the sidekick.

I called 611 and told them i wanted to upgrade from my sk 3 and asked what kind of discount i could get on it. they told me that i upgraded a year ago so i would have to pay full price. I then told them i would be moving to verizon and they could expect my term fee in the mail in about a week. The guy then told me he could get me the 2008 for 149.99 and my wife could up grade for the same price. on top of that he waved the upgrade fee.

I still have the SK3. I’m thinking about upgrading but I don’t know if this phone is worth it. Don’t get me wrong I love the fact that you can change the shells, the higher resolution screen, 2 MP camera with video and the overall look of the phone. But its not really that different than my SK3. The UI is almost exactly the same, camera lacks flash, no wi-fi, and I bet you can still only hold 100 text messages. Seeing that 3G is comming out in October I think the next Sidekick (however long it may take to come out) will be much more worth it.

I’m sticking with my SK3, despite it’s brokedness, until some 3G goodness comes out. The “upgraded LX” in December won’t interest me more than likely, as I’m probably one of the few who doesn’t like the LX to begin with. I can wait til next March or whenever it’ll end up being, and use my tax rebate on a 3G SK

Go for the SK08. The LX is basically the same as your Slide plus a larger screen and video. The 08 is cheaper, has video, and a 2 MP camera compared to the LX’s 1.3 MP. Also can’t forget the customizable shells. The 08’s screen size is larger than the Slide but smaller than the LX.

There is nothing confirmed yet about a new Sidekick comming out in December. So far everything is just rumors. I suggest to get the LX if you are not signing a new 2 year contract. But if you can wait a couple months or until early next year it may be worth it.
IMO SK2 or earlier to LX worth it, but SK3 to LX not so much.

But the sk 2008 is really great even though the pieces r cheap its great it shiny n small. picture this imagen the lx but smaller shiny n not so heavy it would be great (unless if u like heavy phones). I just changed from a Blackberry 8320 to the new Sidekick “Gekko” 2008!
I’ve havd previous SK’s in the past a SK II and a SK 3.
I do like it a lot, my Blackberry was just lacking a few things that I needed. I like that the new SK is customizable with shells, it allows you to be more of an individual.
The Blackberry is a good phone don’t get me wrong, but I have my Sidekick back and it feels like I never left. I too like the hard keyboard on the 3, but I am getting used to it as I am typing this reply from my SK 08.
If your someone that enjoys the Sidekick line, and what something new and fresh, that you can really call your own (by customizing) and you text, e-mail, and browse the web I’d recommend purchasing the Sidekick 2008.
If a new Sidekick comes out in December or anytime after that, I will check it out, but I’m not going to buy it.
If you like the LX better, to each there own.
Have to call T-mobile and change my e-mail address.

the sidekick 2008 looks kind of cheap to me, but so did the ID. I have a sidekick 3, had a sidekick II, and a sidekick before that. The keyboard usability looks crappy, and although it is much lighter than the 3, is it just as big.
I’m switching to att and getting an LG Shine, for a change of pace and to save money (not doing a data plan).

I had the sidekick 3, but now I have the Sidekick 2008 because my sk3 broke so my insurance company gave it to me for a discounted price. I hated my sidekick 3. It was really crappy and too big. It had no features and you couldn’t even send a picture message. I am really happy with my sk08 because it has all the features of all the sidekicks. Its really great plus its really light and so much smaller. I love it. Would recommend it.
