Sidekick LX 2009 Community App Reviews
Even though a lot of people have purchased their Sidekick LX 2009’s, there are still quite a few people waiting to see if it is worth upgrading. One of the main thing that the device boasts is having powerful “Social-Networking” applications, such as Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter. We’ve gone ahead and went into the depths of these three, free applications, to bring you the pros and cons of them. We’ll give you all that you need to know, including functionality, issues we’ve encountered, and much more. Remember, we love the applications, but we are providing the most neutral review possible. Let’s dive into it.
Myspace
The Myspace application is basically a port of their version from the older OS. We see much of the same functionality, and the 3G service just makes it run a bit smoother and faster for us. Since a lot of this application is the same as the old version, we won’t be commenting much on it, just giving features.
You have the ability to view all aspects of your profile, including photos, blogs, comments, and your main profile. The profile editor is very nice, as you can place html code in the sections you wish; you may not be able to view these changes in the application, but you can still edit it all. Definitely a very desktop-like editor for your profile. Not only can you upload your photos straight from the album, but you can also upload videos to your profile. In addition, you can set alerts to just about anything that you would need to be notified about in the application. Most of these won’t need to be set, but still nice to have.
Some of the things we wish that existed are the ability to view profile videos and listen to profile music. We understand that this would require a complete update on Myspace’s side, but using RTSP streams, they could have tried to make this possible. Otherwise, the application is pretty complete. There is yet to be a fully powerful mobile Myspace application on any device, but this application is pretty great for an avid user. Overall, it’s pretty stable, and the application auto-reconnects if there is ever an abrupt log out.
The Facebook application is a very nice and intuitive app that gives us the best of Facebook. The application pretty much takes the standard mobile edition of Facebook, and turns it into an updating app.
The splash screen is very nice, showing you not only that you have an alert, but actually gives you a newsfeed preview of the latest friend status and Facebook activity. We also like that you can refresh the home, which will give you the latest activity. The image icons and previews come up pretty fast, even just on EDGE.
Viewing a friends profile, you can easily comment, poke, or even message them. Composing a message is much like the email application, but it’s still within the app. You can also comment on statuses, and upload photos directly from your photo album. You can update your status with no problem, and view all messages, friend statuses, and search Facebook; all of these options reside in their own tab.
The ability to “Like” a status does not exist in the application, which is somewhat of a downer, considering we sometimes don’t always like to comment on a status. It also would have been nice to see the ability to upload videos to your profile, or watch videos from other friends profiles. We would have like to have seen a version of Facebook chat as well; we’ve seen it on other devices, and it would have been a great addition to the app if you could use this feature.
Aside from a few flaws, it a pretty great application, and saves you from having to keep using the browser. An app built in keeps everything Facebook related very organized; Facebook users will spend a lot of time in this app.
Finally, you can have a Twitter application on your Sidekick, that interacts with the site just the way you want it to; the mobile website doesn’t always have the ability to perform certain tasks, but this application definitely performs.
The splash screen gives you a preview of one or two tweets, and tells you when it was posted. Inside of the app, you can see A LOT of tweets that have been posted by people that you follow. In addition, you can easily update your status, with a text field that has a ticker counting down your 140 characters. Scrolling over a person’s tweet, you can send then an “@ reply”, send them a direct message, see their timeline, and view their profile. You can also choose to stop following that person, or mark the tweet as a favorite. You can delete a tweet you made, follow new people, and update your location.
The problem with this app is that you are forced to choose between intervals of automatic updating, which tend to be either too fast and burn battery, or too slow and not update enough. We wish there was a manual update action, that could force an update. Also, we wanted to see the tweets to be updated after you send a tweet, showing your message and updating the timeline. Another feature that we find missing is Twitpic, or photo posting functionality in general. This is one of the very popular trends when adding something to view in a tweet. Sure, you can go ahead and post it to Photobucket and drag the link in, but direct Twitpic functionality would be ideal. Also, updating your location is more of a manual process; it would have been nice to see it fetch your current location upon request.

Hey Ed, throw this up! Microsoft just release “myphone” this is the technology that they borrowed/Stole from danger after buying them last year.
It backs up all the contacts/pictures/tasks/calender/notes on a back end server.

I don’t like how Facebook doesn’t “notify” you of pic comments or status replies. The only way I realized my brother commented on my pics were because I scrolled down the home page. And I went back and checked my friends status to see that she replied to my comment. (I’m not sure about ‘pokes’ yet, but I know I can’t poke this girl I’ve been chatting with cause she’s not my “friend”).
Otherwise, it’s pretty awesome and nice to not tie-up the browser!!

I was so excited about the twitter app and all the social apps being free but after using the new Sidekick LX 09 for 1 week … I realized that they are all useless. They lag the OS so bad. Even with them uninstalled, the OS is still sluggish and struggling to complete task. The Twitter app won’t let you refresh manually. I have to wait 5min. just to see my friend’s “@reply” … What a joke! You’re better off using the mobile web browser. It’s faster and better.
I was one that said I’d never leave the sidekick because of how easy it was to use and how great the keyboard was. But now, I can’t take it anymore. I have to move on. I will miss the best keyboard on a mobile device. But that’s not enough to keep me using a sluggish, locked down device.

I for one i’m totally happy with my new sidekick,I love everything about it.I know that a lot of people are complaining about the application being slow.I don’t have that problem.Not only that there are some really cool features that they really didn’t mention.Like the fact that you can have your friends record there own ring tones for when they call you,Or being able to send pics via aim…I love my new sidekick

There is one plain Jane alarm in your Settings which is sufficient for me. You can adjust the beep volume and you have to turn it off. There is no schedule or customization. If you want something fancy like several at once, or the ability to choose sounds, timer, and stopwatch you’d have to look into the one that is offered in the Download Catalog for $2.99.

Although you might not notice a significant improvement in speed, have a 3G radio adds a few new abilities that EDGE couldn’t offer. Video/Audio streaming, the ability simultaniously talk on the phone and use data. 3G does have its advantages

These apps seem nice but the sidekick download catalog is garbage. There are not any useful apps and they are all overpriced. The apps with recurring fees are the only decent apps, but are not worth it since you have to pay monthly to keep them. G1/iPhone/iPod touch/blackberry apps are way better.

If you’re determined to get a sidekick, the old LX or ‘08 gets the job done as far as messaging, IM, E-mail, and calling is concerned. They don’t have the free social networking apps, 3G, GPS or mobile youtube (which I’ve been hearing is **** without 3G).
It’s good if you’re eligible to upgrade, however if you’re not you might want to check out the G1 or Blackberry 8900 because the G1 is $50 cheaper than the LX ‘09 without a contract and the blackberry is only $50 more than the new LX. I’m sure they both can do everything the new LX does, and more.

i love the phone. but it keeps doing the black screen/green letters/red x & keeps rebooting on me. i went to t-mobile to get another one since i only had it for a week &. guess what?! the new one keeps doing it too as soon as i sign into my account ! i’m like so upset. idk what to do. hopefully the 3rd time’s the charm.
& tell me whyyyy i still have my lx07 box & receipt. i paid like $380 for an upgrade o_O was i stupid or is this new sk way cheaper? lol i def. paid $268 for the upgrade.

I haven’t had many issues loading youtube videos, and Buffalo, NY sadly won’t have 3g til Q3 (AKA youtube videos usually (not always) connect/buffer/load/run pretty smoothly for me). You can also stream audio, obviously since you can stream video, on EDGE. Again, it’s probably not as fast or as smooth as 3g, but I only experience buffering once in a while. Web pages seems to load faster on the 09 than the 07, personally.
My phone has yet to crash…so I hope I’m not jinxing myself! Chanty, did you ask them to maybe give you a new SIM card? I dunno if it will help, but they can port all your info onto a brand new SIM card as I had them do when I was having issues with my 07 back when it first rolled out. I hope you get that problem fixed!
Oh, and just an update: You will be “notified” if someone pokes you on facebook (in your Notifications folder), so that’s a plus!

ok so i bought the lx 09 and got it on may 12. i also had just bought a iphone 2g unlocked n jailbroken. so i had to phones and had to decide with one to keep at my permanent.
i like all the new feature the lx 09 has to offer like 3G, video recording, and all the installed apps, such as facebook myspace and tweeter. but the mobile youtube page is so great. yea it doesnt take forever to buffer a video but the quality isnt so good and you could barely see faces or details on the video. I really like that you can listen to streaming radio thru SHOUTCAST!!! the phone is good i had all types of sidekicks from the 1st to last. but i think i out grew it and i am no longer a teenager who enjoys texting and uses all the apps as much as others.
so i decided to go with the iphone which is more business like and i can do about anythin on. and download great apps for free without paying and being limited to a CATALOG.
so in reality its all about what you prefer, yes the touchscreens suck for Texting but you kinda gotta give a try and practice makes almost perfect.
and on that note. im not against the sidekick but i just think i out grew it and im movin on to better things that fit my lifestyles.
P.s. i will be giving my sidekick lx 09 to my sister in law who is turning 17 and is a myspace facebook tweeter freak who doesnt stop texting all day, i know she will have more use for it.

Just got my 09 off of craigslist ….. glad I didn’t extend my contract. For anyone that had the lx before you are probably just as dissapointed as me. Such a waste of money. Words of advice wait for the next one! I’m sure it’ll be right around the corner. I’ve seen better videos on an etch a sketch!

i finally go tmine. it took forever!!!! i had issues that i dont wann atalk about.
but the phone is ok. the first thing i noticed was that the web is SSSSOOOOO much faster ontheis thing!
then i realized that i dont need facebook, myspace or twitter, then i realized that the track ball is not as user friendly as it was on the last lx. then as i continued to mess with it the damn thing still has that problem with the icons floating away and that kinda pee’d me a little then i was just down right mad as h3ll when i tried to make a video for youtube and the screen froze up on me. but at least now it wont be so bad when i pull this thing out at a company confrence meeting. its still not going to compete with the g1 or those fancy treos or those kick @$$ nseries nokias but its better than the last one. im cool with it. makes me feel like im still cool even though im actually too old to be walking around with this in my pocket.
anybody know where i can get a protective case for this thing?? one of those things that cover both the front and back of the phone. im going to try ebay but i was hoping that maybe one of my fellow kickers would have a inside scoop on a site or something where i can get a good one.

This is such a great phone, however I have to send it back and for that, I am truly bummed. I’ve spent the last 10 days learning and loving almost every single part of it. However, the browser is just not up to par. I went and tried out a name which I will not mention at the T-mobile store just now. While it was an ugly device, its browser blew the Sidekick’s away. My old sidekick, the sidekick LX had this app I bought called newsfeed or newsroom, you could add up to five websites that keeps you up to date on the news and now this new sidekick lx 2009 it doesn’t even have it???? They’re SLOWLY working on it news,weather and everyday life apps should be free considering it’s a SMARTPHONE at a smartphone price.Can’t use Opera Mini Mobile tried to put my favy news sites and so on plus the weather channel hopefully they’ll get on the fireball on this.
The only app I downloaded was the calculator for free oh wow lol.. others nah no interest in them.
The MS Intellisync is ready on your MY T-MOBILE for $9.99 when now for windows mobile my mobile beta is free WTF?

I gave my sidekick lx to my gf and having this sidekick lx 2009 is making me miss my old one already lol! But like my first sidekick, I didn’t like it at first but grew to love it within 48 hours. Come on tmobile hurry up, also the newsfeed shouldn’t cost 2.99 a month

To you, and to everyone in this post. Updating applications for the new device is harder than you may think. They aren’t just porting the apps like they could with the LX07->SK08. They have to update graphics, certain functionality, and may update the UI of their apps. They are bringing the apps to the new device; don’t think that we are stuck with these apps in the catalog forever; very soon, you will see a boom of apps coming in the Catalog. You just have to give it some time.

The Quality Assurance (QA) put in place by Danger also takes a bit of time, so an app could have been submitted to the catalog, but is currently in QA until it is deemed bug free and ready for the catalog by Danger.

Some ppl are having problems with their kicks mine decided to go Terminator on me and shut down and reboot,lol..only once..Like maybe later they’ll give us something to delete the imports,or being able to download your ringers from your mp3s and so on..Like I’m waiting on the i711 software for this LX cause it’s on the others gotta test and squeeze the charmin,I mean bugs out..

Well after searching around I’ve come to this since,MS brought Danger and most believe kicks are smartphone as we pay the smartphone price-which is also more…MS could they add on Windows Mobile to the kick or that’s impossible because of the OS?With the newer WM coming out it would solve most solutions of downloading free apps as in Opera Mini,there is a Flash mobile but 20.00 nah..RSS news feeds for mobiles and more but none can be use on the kick.
Like Silver says,obviously they’re working on the apps and they fired or released Danger workers,it’s gonna take some time till we see something.Now if Uncle Bill says,hey we need to make these kicks really special lets hook them up..haha I’m dreaming right?Doesn’t hurt though,lol..
Best thing to do is check the catalogs,use your pc to go on your My T-Mobile and see any updates there.On the kick latest news,TMO is using hiptop3.com for it.Means the tootsie roll world could read what I write and become famous,oh pfft pluhease,lol..

Once again bebe thanks for providing some info. But what’s really weird is, why would tmobile release a product when its not even finished? Don’t you think tmobile could of waited until they transfered all the stuff from sidekick lx 2008 lol to the lx 2009 and then released it? Then again it seems like a lot of other companies are doing this as well. Also remember when sidekick lx 2008 owners finally got a firmware update to finally record videos? Why do sidekick owners have to wait several months or sometime a year after it was released for some updates? Tmobile doesn’t transfer any apps over, that’s all up to the developers and Danger.
The only product tmobile needed to be finished, was the device with the new OS on it. Every thing that’s in the catalog (games and apps) only get transfered when the developers finish their product and danger approves it.

Now remember MS just took over at almost at this time or later last year,so basically these kicks were already on the go for the market.We all know how MS is to making their products and is ready to go and afterwards they fix the bugs out and so on..

3G is just faster internet and better connection for your calls also. The software development kit for this OS was only publicly released about a month before the device was released. Some developers are one or two people, recreating an app for this OS might have taken some time. Certain developers had the kit ahead of time, allowing them to test and create the games and apps before others could. The apps currently in the Catalog are from either Danger, or a few developers that either had the kit ahead of time, or really pushed to get it out for release date.
When we first got the LX (07), there were the same amount, if not less, of products available in the Catalog. After a month, things began to show up. It hasn’t even been a month folks, so take it easy.

Hey Matthew,I did alot of searching online on regular pc and then online on the kick.What I found is like an article written that says basically MS should play it smart with Danger OS,because it’s one of the best out there and shouldn’t be toyed with at all.The kick first by using AIM,best in the Qwerty board,best for the hearing impaired.They believe some how MS will try to put Windows Mobile and Zune onto it,I say Windows Mobile more likely even with 7 coming out soon.Question is if they do that will they raise the pricing of the Data plans,I hope not.
The other thing is since MS and Yahoo are working on deal of MS buying Yahoo.As maybe most of us know there’s the new Yahoo Mobile m.mobile.yahoo.com but it’s not ready for the kick hopefully soon.On the kick though when you put m.mobile.yahoo.com it will say the same thing but it leads to a temporary use of having news,sports,etc..you can either sign in or not.So for right until more updates come out that’s good for now and try igoogle,I’ve bookmarked both,Windows Live,lol I couldn’t sign in..
I’m having fun with the music media but I need updated headphones with mic,lol..I also found secret codes that I bet most of you know about already but I get amused with stuff like this,actually mostly anything,lol..Plus I’m transfering photos and numbers that most didn’t cross over thank goodies for my older cells ans sim cards..

3G doesn’t do anything to AIM but give you better internet connection,voice service,less dropped calls,it’s just a stronger signal over the 2G,EDGE,GPRS..AIM has been with the kick since the begining but it also helps the hearing impaired community as well…

Hey everyone,I’m enjoying my kick very much and it’s giving me exactly what I wanted and needed.In spite of newer devices coming out,I made the right choice for me plus the fact I’m hard of hearing.
Yes it takes 4 hrs of charging but that’s not a problem with me.There’s some accessories out but none to my needs except oh wow a 2gb micro sd card for 14.99,lol..
The Intellisync is available on your My T-Mobile account for a price of $9.99 but I have no use for it unlike business savies do.
The photos look sharp on there even putting older photos on it I mean I transfered over from another cell.I’ve had,still works and is my backups(I own 2 of the same)pictures taking from 4 yrs ago.When you see it in the menu my old photos are disorted but when you view them in full view it’s clear and so colorful.I sent them from my phone to someone’s email and they said my pixs looked great..lol..
So,I’m very happy with my new Tech Toy regardless how old I am and frankly I don’t give a damn,lol..what others say..

OK,waaahhh? Far as I know the kick and Blkberries uses i711 for txting relay and I think some other companies do too.
Kick was the first ones to use AIM and to be of use for the HOH.I’m waiting on the new download for it(i711)among other things.I dugged deep into info about the kick and more.That’s why I chose it because no others could give me what the kick does besides the blkberries.
Sad thing is they wouldn’t let the IPhone be accessible for the HOH,ATT but I don’t know about TMOE.
To some customers they’re not satisfied with their service or cell and wait till you get to the one post about the IPhone,talk about sad their story is sad,lol..

Yes you may,I have 3 from TMO and 2 are the same with different sims which has old pics,numbers and so on.The one I replace the kick with was a Sammy t509s,cute lil thing gave me great pics and all but the bateery I believe was going bad so I got the kick just in time.
I won’t rid them because they’re all backups.They want you to send you old but that’s up to you.Really if your one goes bad and you gotta wait for replacement and you don’t have an extra one you’re screwed.They’ll tell to go rent a cell from them but you gotta give up an account card so you’ll return it.
My sis went w/o a cell for 5 days and no one bothered to tell her about this rent a cell but it’s not worth it in my oppinion.It was their stupidity mistake at the TMO Store and she wounded up buying a new battery for her recently new G1 and the 90 day warranty passed in April.She’s w/o a cell,it was their mistake,she had to wait for the new one to come in and to find out it was the battery not the G1.
So,I use my sister as an perfect example of why you should keep your old cell and you buy new.

I still can’t believe tmo wants $3 bucks a month for weather. I can just set up email weather alerts for free with the many websites that exist.

I don’t like the browser. I have searched far and wide for other sites that play video and songs but it won’t do anything else but youtube. Im getting sick of sidekicks looking for ways to shaft me. Why do they always come up short of the other smart phones but charge the same price? The g1 is actually cheaper and it will let me watch vids on other sites. I tried it at the tmobile store. This is upsetting me. I think im going to switch to the g1. I can hack a g1 to boot a full blown distro of linux. Ok,well did you not read anything about what the sidekick will and won’t have through many of these postings on blogs?The kick doesn’t have flash to see other video sites but only for You Tube.We can’t use Opera Mini,Windows Mobile or anything else but only use what it will let us use.
You can listen to Winamp/Shoutcast radio and that’s it also.Until they see and realized that the kick needs more and it’s still early hasn’t been a month yet of it,this is all we get for now.
The kick didn’t shaft you you shafted yourself by not getting more information about what it will and will not do,or what it has and don’t have.
G1 and SKLX are running off the same cpu Qualcomm which takes over IPhone.MSDanger owns the OS program not TMO.
Ringers,you can make your own with free sites or an audio software to put on your desktop and send it to your tmail.com or your number then tmomail.net.Problem is Danger forgot to put in a program to delete those ringers you no longer want.
If you’re someone who’s used the kicks for years then you should of done you’re reseacrh on it.I’m a first time kick owner who did her research on it and more which everyone should do when it comes to using and buying products.

1 friend of mine that has updated took it back and is now back with the old LX. She said it would cut off for hours at a time. Now she says she is probably gonna get an iphone. My other friend has updated and has had no problems, that I know of. So I don’t know. I don’t like the way the new screen sits on top of the phone and doesn’t swivel into it when closed, it looks like an old SK. I don’t really have the money right now, and I don’t really want to upgrade to this one, all the ringtones, games, and apps still aren’t free and when I upgrade it’s gonna be to a phone that is open source, probably an Adroid phone that is supposed to be coming out in October.

Anybody know how I can get my ringtones? I emailed em to myself and they keep sayin they are too big even though they are much less than the 6MB allowed for emails. Then I call T-Mobile and they tell me that the network doesn’t allow you to email songs or bluetooth ringtones. You have to purchase them. So I’m like then what’s the point of opening that feature up finally. Not to mention I already was successful with 2 of them. I could’ve saved $149 and kept my old LX if that was the case. I guess you people think these developers spend there time creating apps for free. Let’s see one of you take the time to learn java, create an app and then expect not to get paid for it. I guess you sit on your jobs all day (for those of you who have them) and expect not to get paid for your “hard” work right? Quit the complaining most other phones charge for weather apps: iPhone, G1, SK, BB etc unless you go on the internet and get it yourself. iPhone has weather but it’s not like you get an update notification for it like Weather Underground nor is it always displayed somewhere rather than having to go into the app and wait or it to refresh everytime. And the Newsroom was never free except for maybe one month when they pick an app and run a promotion for it. Which clearly states that before downloading.

Verizon charges $30 for theirs but that doesnt include text and if you want to use it as a modem its and extra 30. Sprint/Nextel is way up there for theirs and no one really cares about Helio/Virgin Mobile and MetroPCS. I’ve heard suncom androgers charge out the *** for their hiptop plans. They already charge you for AIM and Google is just in the web browser which they charge you for as well when you pay that unlimited plan that includes you’re AIM and you’re eb browsing, Yahoo, etc etc.
No the newsroom app was only free for 1 month. Every now and then they do a promotion in the catalog where an app or a game subscription is free for a month then once that month is up you have to pay. One time it was EGO, another time it was sudoku daily, another time it was something else. It’s never gone months being free though. AIM is definitely something I would pay for even it was separate because AIM on other phone suck. The lag is ridiculous. Although it does do pretty well on the iPhone except you can’t run it in the background which is a turn off.
I’m not totally happily with my T-Mobile service but I’m not completely disgusted and don’t mind paying whatever if I want the weater displayed although I really don’t care cause if I really wanted to the know the weather I’ll check the weather channel or open my door and stand outside butt naked for a few minutes to see how the temp changes. Only subscription app i have is sudoku and my auctioneer(once they get it back on the SK).
Seriously though does anyone know how I can work around that ringtone thing?

Zune was a phone that ms had but failed. There thinking about bringing it back out again. So they cant put zune in the sidekick.

That’s not nagging,that’s telling you to do your research which is all over these blogs and check out what was said..What can and can’t be done,plus there’s an manual you can download and save to your documents,in that way you can look up anything you need to know..Yes it falls short on a few things but hopefully they’ll kink it out and notice it..
I learned as much as I could on my own as a first time user of the kick and figured things out on my own. Except for 2 things own made themes(learned)and ringers(learned)Crazy and someone else taught and helped me…
Speaking of Crazy,go to You Tube,type in Crazyforkicks,Crazy is from here did a video of the unboxing of the kick,now he did a video of how to make your own ringtones..Just watch and listen and you will be able to do your own.Just remember as he will tell you,up to 20 secs is how much you can use as a ringtone..

I’ve had my sidekick 2009 since may 11th, and I had to replace mine in a month…just mailed the old one back today actually. It shut down on me, the facebook app didn’t work, and it just slowed down a lot when scrolling. I just tried the facebook app and my profile still doesn’t load properly. Has anyone ever had this problem? What did you do to resolve this?? Thanks!

I just got this phone, and I have to say, even though I do not live in a 3G supported area, this is the fastest phone I have ever had. There is NO lag time, even with the apps, and surfing the web is super easy and fun. The thing I learned after I got the phone, with really made me mad, was it’s not only impossible to add your own ringtones, it’s impossible ( for mine at least ) to even download songs to listen to. And it sucks you can’t put a pic as a background. Other than that, I’m super happy witht his phone.
