Sidekick LX 2009 Questions Answered
Over the past few months most of our Sidekick LX 2009 questions have been answered in one way or another. But now that the device is here and actually in the hands of people it’s time to fill in the holes of the questions that haven’t been answered. Exiva was one of the lucky ones who got his Sidekick LX 2009 early. Because he’s awesome, he has agreed to answer whatever questions you have about the device. This is your chance to ask someone who is actually holding the new Sidekick in their hands. Here we go!
How does the keyboard feel?
-It’s a harder rubber than the LX. Same style, feels nice. There’s definitely a difference though.
How does the OS look/perform?
-It looks gorgeous on the new LCD (everything does though.) It performs really well. I haven’t noticed any slowdowns yet.
How does it compare to other sidekicks in all areas?
-It’s much lighter than the LX was, It feels more sturdy than the 08 in the few times I played with it. I haven’t tested battery life yet, so I can’t comment on that. The speaker is significantly louder than the LX’s, which is nice.
If you had ringtones on a previous sidekick, were they transferred over?
-Not sure, I never bought any ringtones.
Can we use sounds as ringtones saved from emails?
-Yes, as long as they are 100kb or less. So to get any length in the mp3 the quality will be pretty crummy. You can record on the device up to 20seconds.
Can he take a picture of the text messaging screen? is it the same as the previous sidekicks?
-Yes, it’s the same messaging app since the 2.3 OTA of the Sidekick 2. Nothing new like message threading.
Since we can stream radio, can we stream mp3s through the browser too?
-No.
What does the battery look like?
-It’s small in size. The capacity seems to be lower than the LX (The 09 is 1250mAh and my LX is 1540mAh) What the battery life is yet, I’m not sure.
Is the speaker really a big difference?
-Yes, it’s much louder. Almost as loud as the Slide was.
Do the applications and ringtones transfer?
-No.
Is ringtone recording on the official to the public phone?
-Yes.
Are the keys on the keypad the same material as the ones on the Sidekick LX?
-They are a harder rubber than the LX. Feels really nice.
What are the new “face/mood” icons in the messengers.
-AIM and MSN are the same as the LX with the 4.6 OTA, Yahoo has new icons I think. Screenshot
What is available in the catalog? anything free or different? is it full of items or a limit due to the new O.S?
-The catalog is pretty bare for now, I’m sure they are working overtime to get more apps/games ready. The free apps are; Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft Live Maps, and MySpace.
Is there any way to get around the 100+30 limit on text messaging?
-No
can you post pictures to twitter from the twitter app? ie. twitpic
-No
How does the web browser compare to the LX’s web browser?
-Larger space for viewing sites, faster. That’s pretty much it.
When did you preorder? i am so jealous! i want mine right now!
-The night it was available.
What does the Carrying Case look like??
-It’s just a case. It doesn’t have any belt loops or anything, so if you want to use on your belt you’ll have to buy a 3rd party case.
Can We plz get some pix of the acessories if thats not 2 much 2 ask thanx and how do u feel to b the 1st normal person 2 have one and how do u think u got it early?
-The included accessories are Wall charger, Headphones, USB cable for your computer, and the carrying case.
How solid does the phone feel? Can you take some comparison shots vs whatever phone you were using prior to today so we can get a feel for the size?
-The phone feels really solid. I thought the 08 felt like a cheap piece of plastic. This feels much nicer than the 08, and the LX. (Mostly thanks to the rubberish coating) I was using a LX before this, See the new post for comparison shots to the LX and Slide.
How is the quality like the weight, design, quality, and ease of use compared tot he oiginal thanks!
-It’s much lighter than the LX and Slide (I can’t compare to the 08, sorry.) and I think the build quality is much better than before. It’s got a great feel to it. The design kind of has a BWSK/CSK feel to it with the raised up screen. I like it.
How does the video quality look when watching a video on youtube?
-It’s… watchable. The videos are highly compressed for mobile viewing (iPhone has access to higher quality videos)
when watching a recorded video, is it clear? or do u see the pixels just like the LX?< ?strong>
-Recorded video isn’t bad. It’s definitely not on par with a Digital Camera, or something like a Flip. But it’s usable, and hey.. it’s unlimited length now.
Do the mood lights light up different colors?
-Blue only.
How fast is the internet? is it much more faster then the LX and previous sidekicks?
-When you’re on 3G, the Internet is fast. Very nice.
Can take a screen shot of AIM and MSN?

Can you speak on the phone and IM and browse the web at the same time?
-Yes, However… only if you’re connected to 3G. Otherwise, no.
Can you take a screenshot of the AIM and MSN icons? I’ve been using an SK3 since it came out

Also, can you view animated gifs the new one? That’s the one thing I wish it could do…
-No.
What about the blog management tools that were listed? or is it just describing twitter?
-I presume just Twitter, but I wouldn’t rule out seeing any other apps (blogger, etc) in the future.
Do you know if you can use voice activated dialing?…like when you say a name and it dials it?
-No voice dialing
Is the flash better than the old lx?
-Not sure. I haven’t tried it yet.
what do the Monkeys, Bird & Evils look like in AIM & in Yahoo?
-The same, just larger versions for the new screen.
Can you play a converted DVD video? I heard it can play one at native resolution! how clear is it at 30fps?
-I have not been successful in converting any video for the new device yet. (Hell, the old device too.)
What does the music player look and sound like
-Music player is the same. Sounds much louder than before.
Is the video recording screen still a little box or has it gotten bigger?
-It’s gotten bigger, It’s now doing 320×240 as opposed to 176×144
Does the camera application have a self- timer?
-No. (This would be cool though)
Does the the Face Book application allow you upload cel-pics to your personal Face Book page?
-Yes, you can even tag friends in photos you upload.
Is there a weather app built in or is it like the old sidekick where it cost 3 dollars a month to get the weather?
-It will be a recurring fee app I suppose, I’m not sure as it’s not in the catalog yet.
How is the swivel? Is it sturdy or flimsy? Thanks
-Sturdy. The magnets are a lot stronger that hold the screen closed so it takes a little extra oomph to open the LCD.
does it have flash on it? do other websites beside youtube that use flash do they work like hulu?
-It does *NOT* Have flash. I want to make this very clear. Just because you can view Youtube videos does not mean it has flash. YouTube has a mobile version where they have the videos available in very small, very compressed streaming format (RTSP if you’re interested.) and that’s how you’re viewing YouTube on your device.
Do you know if the SKLX09 has the hearing aids codes?M2-5?Cause I wear aids in both ears.
-I Have no idea. Not sure how to tell either, sorry. Maybe T-Mobile can be of help.
can u send pictures in messages through aim to ppl who have older sidekicks?
-No.
also i seen in one of the pix u can go invisible so now u can appear offline while really online?
-Yes.
also can u have more aim conversations open at one time kuz i believe it was always limited to 10?
-Nope, still 10.
also did/does ur autotext carry over bekuz i have alot of it lol?
-Yes.

-Yes, still 100.
can you send pics to ppl on aim?
-Yes.
Can you send pictures to other ppl on aim with who have the sidekick LX?
-Yes, only the 09 though. Older devices (LX 07, Sidekick 08, Etc) won’t work.

Is the battery life better?
-I took mine off the charger at about 3am last night. It just died at about 10:50pm (With GPS on and playing with it, Twitter refreshing every 5 mins, and Facebook. Along with my normal IM/Text/Browser/Phone usage)
Do you know if there are any mood light Tricks?
-Not sure, sorry.
what is the video recording format on the new lx is it still 3gp
-In the new “High Quality” mode it’s recording in MP4 at an unlimited length. In the lower quality it’s 3GP.
Do your bookmarks transfer over from the old device?
-Yes.
On the MySpace app, can you update mood/status?
-I don’t know, I don’t have a MySpace account and I’m not making one, sorry. You can on the Facebook app though.
What’s your favorite feature so far?
-The new screen. It’s amazingly crisp and gorgeous.
How is the GPS. Does it track you in real time?
-I haven’t really played with the GPS much. It picked me up pretty quick when I was outside. The Microsoft Live Maps application has a “Track Me function” I assume this is what you’re looking for.
how’s the camera?? does it take good pictures in the dark??
-It should. The flash is significantly brighter than the LX.

Yes and Yes to you both that ask..I’ve seen great reviews from regular ppl like us..It’s like a critic on a movie they may not like it but doesn’t mean you won’t.No matter what ppl won’t be satisfied with anything.You want it get it and if you don’t like it return it in 14 days(I think they really need to change that to 30)and get credit back on it.

I think what we were trying to find out was does the imap function like imap now, as opposed to being like pop3. imap updates in real time, and should you delete a message on your phone, it uses that protocol to sync that deletion with the email server….in real time

Uh I think I know what you’re talking about I know you can’t use google imaps,Been told can’t use Opera Mini(someone will figure that out)MS Exhange Intellisync is coming out after launch for a fee.Picking my brain here for a bit where did I see this,lol..Oh my I’ve been all ova the place..I believe you can and they said it’s really quick to do sending,deleting.
Can I get back to you on that and remember who had more info?Cos I’ve really have been everywhere,lol..

Well you have the option of 14 days to try it out(I still think it should be extended)and if you keep it what you need to do is add on the full insurance protection plan-$6.99.
This is like putting a warranty for your car and insurance where you pay a deductable to replace it.If it’s something simple call or look around to see who’ll replace the parts for cheap or if you can do it yourself.
Just don’t get any type of water damge to it cos it’s not covered.Now sometimes you can let it dry out that’s with every device and it comes back to life or if it does,lol..
Do you wanna use both of them or just the new one?Keeping the other one is good just incase something happens to the new one until it’s replaced.

Well it’s been said many of times here and there yes you can but the manusl that came out today says only 10 ringtones are already on it.
If someone some where made a video about it be nice to know but on TMO site they say yes.

Some serious ADULT questions:
1. Can the screen be viewed while backlight is off? In otherwords, is it transreflective as in the Sidekick 2. (The SK2 could be viewed in sunlight and roomlight without activating the backlight).
2. 6meg email is only serious drawback to this unit, any way to expand that limit?
3. How easily are the side buttons to press by accident? This was a big drawback to the 3 and previous LX because the buttons could be accidentally pressed.
4. Is MS Exchange an application on the phone? Or is that also limited to 6meg of mail?

i went to the t-mobile store and they took the new sidekick from back and let me play with it. just lucky i guess. but it felt very light the only things i didn’t like about it was the screen was harder to open than previous models, and the control ball kinda lags. for all you that want to know the secret game works, menu, shift p turned the mood lights on and menu f turns the screen into a flashlight. any questions write me i even got to see behind the cover

Here’s a little info about Microsoft Exchange w/Intellisync,which will be use by the kick.It will be some what of a smartphone but a little smartphone.
Windows Mobile,IPhone uses this application and now the SKLX9 will be using it.
It’s two seperated programs that MS and Intelli Sync got together to be used with Windows Mobile,like Blackberries,and others that use it.
Intellisync is owned by Nokia who brought out the company in 2006 and discontinued it’s desktop prouduct as of July 2008 but will continue support untill July of 2010.
The SKLX9 will be using MS Exchange w/Intellisync Mobile Sync-
Which uses push e-mail,PIM,IMAP,POP support while using the Active synch.
Yahoo.com uses Intellisync products and of course with the use of MS products to make AutoSync Yahoo.Which consist of using Outlook Express,MS Outlook,calenders,contacts and notes.As one of the internet browsers that uses it.
Basically it’s owned by Nokia who gives the support to MS to use their software.
It will be released after launch and download from SK Catalog,which people can keep track of their corporate Outlook email on the go.
I guess that’s pretty much it,the question is when these softwares will be released.MS is using all rivals to put on the kick including Google,who owns YouTube their competition on the market of the internet user.
Lot of us want to know what else the kick is gonna do,I’ve realized that;
1.)Until you get it into your hands you’ll be able to learn more about it yourself.I’m more of a hands on teach myself person just like everything else in life.
2.)Critics,critics no matter what and which cell,they’re never satisfied only you can be satisfied or not.Nickpicking it apart because it’s not what they or we want,we learn how to adjust to it.
3.)What can you add,not add, what does it have,don’t have,I’ve also been on sites that alot of them don’t give us to much details but the main ones.
So when you get that new baby,rock it’s craddle and feed it cos it’s gonna need your loving,lol..
I’m excited cos it’s actually the first cell that will fit my needs even if there’s this and that but I’ll be happy with it.

i just got the new sidekick yesterday thru a pre-order..i can truly say this is what a SIDEKICK is truly supposed to be! it’s the sturdys feeling sidekick i ever had,i’ve always been a SK kid since 02′ when i copped the SK2, and one thing i’ve always hated was the overall flimsy design of some of the sk’s, I dont know if it’s only me but every time i handled some of my older sk’s (SK3,SKLX,SK08) i always felt i had to be a little extra delicate with the device in fear i’d fck it up some how but i love the new design and just the overall feel it has in my hands feel real solid and the swivel screen is really sturdy,hes right it takes a lil exxtra finger motion too swivel it up thanks to the magnets and the screen is GORGOUS!!!! I feel pissed off tho because soon as i got my phone i put the sim & memory in and loaded up the browser,went to youtube and my 3G signal dissapeared and the balls started circling looking for a signal and i havent been able to accsess aim or the browser since yesterday, and i called tmobile they told me they’ve gotten hundreds of calls from ppl complaining about their new skLX09 service,ALSO NONE OF MY PICS,SONGS or anything saved on my memory card is avaible!!!! i called tmobile they say it takes upto 72hrs for t-mo to Download the “DATA INTERFACE” w.e that is, I GOT MY SK LX 09 AND I CANT EVEN PLAY WITH IT!!! this is so fustrating, ANY ONE ELSE HAVE ANY SIMULAR PROBLEM OR RESOVLED IT? IF SO HOW LONG DID IT TAKE FOR YOU TO REGAIN FULL-SERVICE?OOO YEA AND JUS A TIP FOR YOU GUYS THAT I DIDNT KNOW, WHEN YOU GET YOUR NEW LXO9 AND YOU INSERT YOUR PREVIOUS SIM-CARD, YOU SHOULD CALL T-MO, (THEY HAD ME ENTER A #0 SERIAL NUMBER AND A BUNCH OF #’S POP’D UP AND SHE CHANGED THEM FOR ME) SO I THINK FOR YOU TO RECEIVE ALL THE PERKS OF THE NEW SK YOU HAVE TO CALL IN AND DO THAT!.plz anyone else wit a lx09 hit me up!

me too. mine worked the whole night i got it and then half the day yesterday, died about noon.
i have a G and 4 bars and am unable to connect to anything. they said they submitted a work request and would get back with me in 24-48 hours. so i went to the tmo store today that i work near and he said it needed replaced, i called them back and then they told me about the connectivity issues with the lx09 and just to wait it out for now.
*stabs self in eyes*
i can make calls, but that’s pretty much useless to me, lol.

What’s the whole 100+30 text messaging thing about? Is that all it can hold? Can you hold more txt messages with a microSD? Thanks!

The 100 is how many you can send and save to the sim..the 30 is how much you can receive and can also be saved to the sim.That’s the limit on in/out going sms and now the micro sd will not hold it unless TMO and the gang changes it..prolly unlikely though..Also msger txting that comes to you on the phone counts..That’s why is good to have unlimited..woo man I learned from that,lol..

It has always been like that as far as I know. Only a sidekick on AIM will recognize that you are on sidekick’s AIM too. At least this is so for the sidekick 2 and the sidekick LX. When I’m on a PC AIM does not show any icon saying my other screen name is on my cell or sidekick; it has me listed regularly.

Hey, I wanna get my hands on onna’ these.. Wanna use it with other operators.. Does the “change-the-sim-pin-code-and-manually-select-network-trick” work on SKLX09 too? Did you try putting in another SIM? I know you can’t use internet after that, but still!! This is one gorgeous phone man!!

My mini sd card keeps coming up sayin “No media on card” but the files show on the computer just not in my phone, how do I fix it?
