Sidekick LX09 – Update on Specs/Features
Thanks to the folks at the official Danger Device Forums, there are a lot more specifics on features thanks to the moderators who actually have been test-driving the devices for several weeks. Here is the rundown so far (with some more pics!):
- No Shells like the 2008
- 3 mood lights – new locations: 1 on top and bottom of the keyboard

- SDHC Memory – no limit – just what is available on the market (16gb – OK!!)
- Speaker is louder than before
- Video Mode – Low Res is a 176×144 resolution meant for sending via email/mms. This resolution is limited to something like 4 minutes.

- It’s a 3.2MP camera with Auto Focus and flash (no zooming).
- There’s an auto focus mode with options distant and macro mode. There’s white balance controls, and B&W, Sepia, Negative effect options.
- Available resolution options are:
- 2048 x 1536
- 1600 x 1200
- 1280 x 960
- 800 x 600
- 640 x 480
- YouTube videos work.
- m.break.com videos work (but not smooth)
- Seesmic does not work
- Facebook app seems to be a souped-up mobile version. No videos, apps, etc.
- Internet Radio Works!! (Ex: ShoutCast):

- You can also upload videos to youtube (or photobucket or myspace) directly
- Web Browser still does not support Flash
- You cannot roam on AT&Ts 3G Network due to the ranges being different:
The LX09 supports UMTS Bands 2100, 1700, 850.
T-Mobile uses 1700 and 2100 for 3G, while AT&T uses 1900. So you won’t be able to roam on AT&T 3G.
As for “Other networks”, it depends on what 3G band they are using. - Still has chrome around the USB/Charger, but appears to be more sratch-resistant:

- When GPS is on, the battery drains faster. (there is an option to turn it on/off)
- Browser is overall the same as the last OTA on the LX. But you have a LOT more room:

- No confirmation as to “Free Ringtone downloads” still basing it on info already published.
- Themes can still be user-generated like before

I’ll start this thread, continuing from my thread in the last posting, WHY HAS T-Mo not updated the 100/30 text limits on the new device? It’s really outrageous, esp since I do love the device, so feel like a very loyal customer, but those iPhones do look tasty, and it T-Mo doesn’t give me (us) what we want in terms of features, then it’s just a matter of time before I (we) switch. This pisses me off. This is the one feature I really wanted an upgrade on.

I just reread it.. The browser hasn’t been updated… anyone have a screen shot? Cus that’s weak that they didn’t upgrade the browser.. Maybe the full page view will work better . Cus it doesn’t on the lx . When you zoom, it all blurs out…

Ok… Let me just run this down real quick because I happen to be a tech geek since the t-mobile pocket pc, loved touch screen phones before most people knew what those were…
I remember when the first sk came out, I seen it in a Jay-z video and I had it as well… sk gray scale, back in like 02 / 03, then they came out with the color.. Sk ones had the attachable cameras.
Sk, to me.. Has fans.. Because when the sk2 came out, to most people that was their first sk.. And what caught me with that bulky phone was the directional pad that lights up in different colors. Is that what they call the “mood lights” to this day?
I then followed them because I was thinking of different ideas for the sk.. And one thing I know that sk shouldn’t change is the things that made them successful.. The OS, keyboard, the swivel, etc. Just sharpen it a bit and they will be good.
Ok.. Now lets get up to date.. I see they have come a long way.. Infact, every year dropping a new sk, and to me I like that because its makes u wonder what is the next sk going to look like or have?
I’m already fascinated with the 09 sk and thinking what do they have planned for 10 and 11.
The “mood lights” on the lx is what captured me and seperated itself from the 3, the 3 had only the trackball like the directional pad on the 2, and that kinda dissapointed me. The lx had only a standard color for the moodlights and I kinda was expecting them to be colorful. Sort of like how I am expecting the lx 09 to be colorful but it probably won’t happen unless they decide to do it on a next one. The lights is a selling point to me.. The shell, I kinda always wanted to see it metallic, with a sophisticated design. Like a prada sk or something. Something that looks upscale and applies to a whole new market.
The text.. 100/30. I don’t let things like that bother me, because to me, if they haven’t upgraded it now, I’m sure they will on a upcoming OTA that they normally have for the sk, just the major one was the video for the lx, so I wouldn’t let that worry me.
I am more interested in flash in the web browser, and when are we able to see the people that we are chatting or talking to via the web. My mind is kinda there. Whenever they are able to release those type of updates, then I will be happier. Right now, I am pretty pleased with the fact alone that the new sk is thinner and lighter with a larger screen that has better resolution. Yes, the iphone looks tasty, but that phone is a different species, in order for MSdanger/hiptop to compete with that phone, they will have to put their heads together and stop playing around and make some phones that make will the market wet their pants. I know they can do it too, I kinda would like to see a sk concept phone, sort of like the concept sony psp. Basically, realistically those guys have to put in real applications in the catalog section that make sense… because the iphone have some appealing applications, I won’t deny that at all. So does the g1.. So basically these guys have to get those developers that use to be on that skdr.net site and get them to create some witty applications to apply to the catalog, sort of like a bait and hook type of situatuon, just to see what users would bite, which ones won’t. Leave the apps there for a limited time just to see how popular or not popular they will be.
Lastly, I just want to say that I am glad that the sk is finally moving to 3g because I am tired of not getting all my calls and people telling that when they call me it goes straight to vm, and all I see is the voicemail pop up.
There is more detail than that, and I probably will type some more later, but I never really did a blog, but this seem interesting to me, so I really wanted to type what’s on my mind.

Okay so I just sold my Sidekick Slide in anticipation of the LX and I am considering this upon reading the news about the 100/30 SMS limit, and also the 6MB email storage. What are they thinking? What are the reasons behind these inane limits? Moreso the SMS than the email — I mean this is a communication device! Why do I have to go in and delete numerous text messages every couple of hours!!! I am seriously considering going the way of the Cricket and upgrading to something else, because Sharp/Danger have been disappointing me for far too long now. Almost there but not quite, too bad!

Anyhoo… sks will be sks, u will either love em or leave em alone. I’m just sure u will probably see the next person with one, after u have switched over to another phone, lost ur 19.99 plan, switch over to a 34.99, then when you switch back over to the sk again it will 34.99 as oppose to the grandfathered 19.99. Boo hoo.
I like em.. its a recession. I need my 19.99 unlimited plan, just like I how I need my magic jack. So um.. Yea.. Sk.. how many sks are you gonna drop this year? I’m certain this is not the only one they are going to release for this year. Better yet, I am certain since MS has Danger under the belt.. The PBD folks only have Beta devices, so things that are normally blocked by T-Mobile in the past, such as customized ringtones, would not be known. The official Press Releases from T-Mobile state that Custom Ringtones are allowed (you do not need to buy from the catalog).

The LX line (LX-07, LX-09, etc.) is menat for more Professinal, upscale users.
The “Sidekick” line (starting with the sk-08, and its predecssor the SKiD) is meant as an entry-level device with more customizable options including Shells, etc.

I know you get GIFs be on the MMS, but Where are they saying you cannot get the animated GIFs? It would have been nice if you could have seen them on the web browser, or even on the main page… like u can make it a background or something or even make the GIFs your Screen saver.

(-)The moodlights, as some of us have stated, did catch my attention with the LX 07. But my disappointment is that they seem to be weaker on this model. I was expecting colorful moodlights with some customization.

A big point I want to make which should be developed is an outbox for failed txts because sometimes i send txt’s and forget about them and then 1hour later i’d notice that it failed. The Txting should be similar to how failed Email’s are sent, just there waiting till service is restored. Most phones now-a-days have an outbox like that. Ex. Nokia, Motorola. Lets just hope and pray this will be the next big OTA!

(-)I’d also like to see a sk battery last at least 10 hours with every feature used. That would be surprising and I feel as though this new model should get close to that.

I pre-ordered the new lx on friday, but then put in a request to cancel the order because i didnt know if i wanted the lx or the g1. if tmobile cancels it tomorrow then im just going to re-pre-order it (made up my own word lol) but if they dont cancel it then i dont have to worry about anything!

This doesnt really matter because the LX plays gifs fine. It separates the file into an audio and picture which play at the same time. So technically its not a gif but works the same. This will be the same way for the new LX.

Anonymous, I stopped by my local TMobile store on Friday and they said I could pre-order online and in the store. I didn’t ask, but I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to pre-order with Customer Care via 611 either.

Hold on…. give me a minute to elaborate more on te customized screen savers…
I’m walking right now, kick in right palm and typing with one thumb so bare wit me…
Ok…. now… I ALREADY KNEW about the customized screen savers that you individuals are refering to… the ones that u can make off the theme site or…. the catalog area where u can use ur own pictures. No….. I’m not talking about.
When I say customized screen savers… remember we was on the topic of GIFs and that made me remember the fish screen saver that look like an aquarium or do yall remember the dancing baby that some of you may have seen or had on your PCs. There is one I have on my kick called.. “City Screen saver”…. it would ber nice to create GIFs files like that and add the as ur screen saver.
I’m anticipating rthe customized ringtones… therefore I’m able to add some loud real wacky sounds to my kick. I’m already in love with the customized themes with different swivel sounds…..that is a BIG sellin point to me… I don’t mind hearing people play with their swivel sounds but what I hear alot is people who constantly press the lower left button under the directional pad. That **** is annoying.
Speaking of which I’m kind of anticipating what the main sounds on the new lx sounds like… if it going to sounds like a ginsu blade, lol.

Well i have had a sidekick id for almost two years(in june)
i am eligible to upgrade already so that’s why i was able to receive the $200 deal
i have read other comments and some people have said that they are eligible too but they also get the $475 deal. I am not exactly sure but t-mobile may have some technical problems on their site.

The 200 deal is for those who is a tmo custie… and haven’t used their upgrade…. meaning they are due for an upgrade… I used my upgrade back in feb for a non sidekick phone… mine came out about 475 with taxes n upgrade fee… they talk about how I get 30 off of the price of 449…. woopdee doo. Is everyone clear on that??? If you upgraded your phone to another phone.. no matter what it is… sidekick or not.. Within the last year, then you are not eligible because you have to wait a certain amount of time to be eligible for another upgrade, therefore tmo can extend your contract to your account for another 2 years.

Oh.. And I’m making sure I put insurance on this phone when I get it, you can guaranteed that.
Another thing I’m antipicating on is.. Being able to play movies on the kick… and watch on the beautiful 3.2″ HD screen.
4 minutes in low resolution to send email or mms videos.. Interesting. That’s better than the 20 and 50 seconds that we have now.
If I was to make a limited edition sk.. I would make it for the lx 09… I would make it metallic.. Oww. Lol. Give it that IP or BB professional look.. Like my sk has a shiny suit on… tie with the big bow, dimple, cufflinks and all.

The kick is so thin… the whole phone is the size is at flat as the sidekick lx screen.
Yea, I know I’m a bit kooky, lol.
Just give me colorful moodlights and I’m straight. And not each light a different color… I love how the lights change colors.. I use to be infacuated with how the sidekick 2 directional pad lights change colors.. Man.. I wanna see that again… I miss that.
TMOBILE… CREATE CHANGEABLE COLOR MOODLIGHTS, PLEASE OR SOMETHING OTHER THAN THE TRACK BEING THE ONLY PART THAT CHANGES DIFFERENT COLORS.

Battery life is mentioned by reviewers to be much better than sklx07, but no accurate stats from a testing lab, just personal observation. they did say GPS will drain the battery faster (just like playing media will also drain the battery faster). Heavy processor-dependant apps always drain battery life. This is a fact of life, same is true for laptops.

Makes me wonder what is going to be in LX09 1st OTA update myself. I was wondering would they be able to increase the text limit size in the 1st OTA? Would that be possible? Or perhaps create text threading? Those ideas seem interesting and I am a person that anything is believe, but it takes time for these things to be released.
I Didn’t worry too much about 100/30 limit and the tab on the web browser, as well as the web browser not being able to view flash, as well the browser not being able to view all other sites like you tube. I kinda figure they wanted to get the phone out there first with the little changes they have made so far and then while we are doing this blog they are already conjuring up the specifics for the next update. I myself am a firm believer that they already conjured the lx09 when the lx came out.. Around the time when the lx had its first update, the finishing touches was already made on the lx09 in house, so now it will take time to properly go through fcc, and mass produce the product, make demos and test them on the network before its released to the public.
Just like right now, I believe that while we are playing around with the release of the lx09 itself.. They are actually playing around with the release of the 1st OTA update and it might be a real doozy.. Sort of like how the 1st update for the lx was last summer.. I definitely couldn’t forget that one.. It started around june – august.. And I use to ask everyone did they receive their update yet because I was so excited to see video on the lx… I HONESTLY thought it wouldn’t be possible for the lx to play video.
I swore they were going to make another sidekick that was going to play video, but for the lx to come out with a video update, that is a major, major update.. So anything is possible with the 1st OTA for the lx 09. To be quite honest, I am just happy with the minor things that they have right now… especially the customized ringtones (about time) and the fact that you can browse the internet and chat on AIM while on the phone at the same time.
I’m sure MSDANGER understands that this is a communication device.. And believe me, these guys aren’t dumb at all. Why do you think they have presale going on??? To see how many loyal fans of the kick there are… basically to understand the type of market they have. I believe MS have something to do with that.. And that’s smart thinking, I would have done the same thing myself. Its about numbers.. And regardless of what.. We ordered the phone on the 17th, but aren’t able to get it until almost the 2nd week in may… because they want to create that buzz, that sensation and see what type of market they are dealing with so they can know what they are offer to their loyal customers later on in the future.
Youhave to understand that the release of the “3G” network on a sidekick is a big thing… its sort of like the sidekick turning from gray scale to color. Do any of you remember when phones were gray scale?? Can you remember the feeling you got when you seen a color phone verses a gray scale phone? Exactly my point… that’s exactly what’s going on now.. And the lx09… lx2010.. And whatever else comes in between is definitely going to cater to the loyal customers.
I personally think this blog is for a reason as well… not only to talk about the new device(s) that are about to be released, but to also have a kind of wish list.. Maybe someone from the factory will take notices and say “hey guys, that sounds like a good idea, lets test that out and see will it work”.
its funny, because I am from NY, and since last year, all I hear from many people was that there is a new sidekick coming out that is going to have a touch screen. Of course they are rumors.. Just rumors… but the idea alone makes you think if it is possible or not.
Subpar.. Well.. To be honest.. I don’t think I could trade stocks on a sidekick or watch live tv.. There are alot of things that the sk cannot that who knows if the makers even want it to do those things. Different phones are different species.. And I always keep my options open, and to be honest, while sk still have the 19.99 and is a 3G network, I’m definitely going to be a loyal customer, even though I very well am open to other devices. I am still fantasizing on a device that you can talk and see the person at the same time.. Basically video conferencing. I’m sure that’s in the work or have been in works for quite some time.
I could go on and on…
But I still say that the colors on kick is what attracts me.. So imagine if everything.. Lights on the keyboard, screen, directional pad and the keys on the 4 corners (jump, menu, etc) light up…if those buttons were to light up and change colors… not to stay one color like the lx blue mood lights… like change colors like the directional pad on the sidekick 2 then that would be pretty jazzy. It would appeal to its own set of users.
I would like to see a sk with a metallic finish.. That would be pretty nice as well.

What is interesting to me… is the fact that “dominica” I would assume is a female and has made that statement about “complaining”. Whereas, I have noticed the individuals who have in my opinion have been overly expressing their opinions … which in actuality is “complaining” seems to be males.

1. I seen “one” of the moodlights, and it looks interesting. I seen the moodlight from the top part of the screen. I like how it divides into 3 then can be as one long piece. I am kinda dissapointed that it doesn’t change colors though.

Not to mention that even with the updates it still wont run apps in the background. Which means soon as I exit Facebook or AIM bye bye conversation cause I’m logged off. My biggest complaint is that I have to sync with iTunes. So when I buy a new computer I lose everything sometimes and Apple is a ***** about letting me recover it. I pay my hard earned money for a song and they tell me how many times i can download it….it’s a crock of ****. Some people are too far up Apple’s *** so they come on here and complain. For what reason I haven’t the smallest idea since this is a SK site and the article is about an SK. If this were a general tech site I might understand. The ones who complain about the 3G service on the LX and it taking so long to load a YouTube video obviously don’t realize that the G1 is on the same f*cking carrier so the load probably isn’t better on either device. YouTube vids on my iPhone take sometime to buffer and load as well on AT&T 3G network. And is Apple not doing the samething Danger is doing. If there is to be a new iPhone device release what would be the point since all devices are getting the 3.0 OS upgrade unles AT&T is going to be releasing a 4G network (which I highly doubt anytime soon and it sucks that Sprint has it with their crappy service and all). Every phone has its flaws and what not and some people will never be satisfied even if the phone comes with a holograph man or woman. I agree with the person who stated however that people want so much out of a phone. They want it to take hi-def pics, hi-def videos, be a video game controller, comb their hair, brush their teeth, be a weapon, etc and it’s just unrealistic. That’s why they have such things as camcorders, digi cams, PSPs, etc. The amount people spend on phones to be all they need they could’ve saved money on each individual component

No offense with you being a female… but going through the motions, crying and complaining like their emotions are acting up.. Like they have PMS. I made a comment that said.. You seem to were the pants more than they do in your words alone. However, the more you add on and add on.. I kinda felt you made your 1st round tyson knock out with that first comment, but to keep going and going, it just makes me understand that ok you are definitely taking this on way too seriously, hence, you are a female.

Ahh.. Yes. The battery life, with the touch screens. Well, not all phones are made alike. Your iphone may do that, but did the t-mobile ipaq do that? Did the t-mobile pocket pc do that? Does even the New samsung behold.. Does it do that? Does the battery deplete after you just touch the screen?
You are kinda complaining when you say that you hope they never make one of those “touch screen sidekicks”, however you are absolutely entitled to your own opinion. To me, its just a mere thought, nothing too serious to squander about. Nothing to get all bloated and gassy about, just a mere idea, that might or might not manifest.
Anyhoo..
I am constantly seeing people asking about updates for the 08 and the lx..
Those questions are somewhat annoying, and dominica you can definitely answer them, I’m sure you have the answer to their question regarding an update for an 08 or Lx that has youtube mobile or whatever else they are asking about.
It doesn’t hurt to ask though, I was kinda amazed when I first seen the lx received an update to play video. So, who knows.. Anything is possible. But quiet honestly.. To me.. The question they are asking, is like asking is the sk3 is going to get a video update.

So yea… the moodlights are looking pretty sweet, and I’m definitely going to put insurance on this phone. I want to put that skin on it so it cannot get scratched. I forgot the name of it.. But I seen a co-worker with his g1 with it. He rubbed it with a key and it didn’t make a mark.

What is the big deal? I work for tmobile. I love the sidekick. I get discounts on all the phones and I choose the sidekick. For what it is, it is a great device. Yes iphones are nice, other smartphones are nice. The sidekick is not a smartphone. It is a messaging device that has extra features. Can the g1 or iphone be put on a prepaid plan. No they can’t. No phone is perfect, if it was you would never upgrade. As for the wallpapers on a sk, you can buy the app that allows you to edit your theme, THEME ARCHITECT, directly fromm your device. Its hella easy to use and completely customizable. Phone manufactures make what they feel to be good. Its not tmobiles fault for these changes, or lack there of. You are never forced to buy them. The sidekick is a great multitasking device and you can jump back and forth seamlessly. And as for people that complain about battery life, complain to BATTERY MANUFACTURES. Its not always the phone but the batteries. I have been with multiple phone compaies in the past before tmobile, and I promise you that other companies don’t treat you like tmobile does. You can upgrade your phone every month with some type of discount and they allow you to make payments on phones. All phones that are high end cost money point blank. I love technology and phones. The first mobile phones cost over 1000 and only made calls. Look at them now. So to wrap this up, this is a new sidekick. One more great SIDEKICK. If you don’t like sidekicks buy a pda. The more avid users, the better the device will evolve into.

Sounds to me that you can go back and forth between the 2 phones. You can switch phones on different days if you wanted to.
My question is…. and not to get into your business, but is the 2 lines under one account or 2 seperate accounts? Because I wanted to have another phone number under my account in order to be eligible for the discount price, however I am certain that it has to be 2 seperate accounts.

i have both lines under my name, both with the same 29.99 data plan, no family plan,. the 3rd line i have is under my mom’s friend name which is a family plan i just pay $15 for that to use mobile to mobile,free nights,weekends, 1000 shared minutes, thats my sony ericsson tm506,. then the sidekicks its only internet,text,etc, i had the 1yr contract, whoever had it,also received a 13% discount on bills, so for my sk and cellphone,i pay $47 total,and my friend pays for the other sk line which is $30. i dont know if i answered your question though.

Quickly reading the comments, but I can’t see why American users can’t roam on AT&T’s 3G network which is 1900Mhz AND 850Mhz – I know this because Telstra users can use AT&T phones on their network and get 3G (and vice versa with AT&T).
Unless they only allow roaming on 1900Mhz, but being Australian I wouldn’t know

Here are some FACTS And QUESTIONS in Regards to the LX 09.
1. For those of you who assume web browsing in the lx 09 IS supported by flash think again. According to hiptop 3 forums, it’s explicitly stated that the web browsing for the LX09 is NOT SUPPORTED BY FLASH. Here is the link: http://www.hiptop3.com/archives/category/sidekick-2009/
With that being said, If web browsing on the Lx09 is STILL not supported by Flash will this deprive full access to “real web browsing performance (e.g. Streaming videos from youtube and or other related site sources)?
2. There are rumors speculating the possibility of a small charge or fee rendered for the GPS Application supported by Microsoft. Is this true?(please provide facts, not opinions as i have provided link above)
3. I’ve been a Tmobile customer as well as a Sidekick holder since the 2nd generation. I’m currently debating if whether i should instead purchase the G2 Android phone. I am a bit skeptical as to how well the Lx09 perfom with it’s upgraded 3G network. I do admire the fact in which Sharp/danger still adheres to “flip phone/ slide” realm. However, questions procure in whether this new device “sidekick Lx 09″ will have slight advantages over the G2 Android phone which to the best of my knowledge release early this summer. (Please feel free to discuss this topic in depth if you please, after all this is a forum discussion). Thank You.
