Sidekick Service to Shut Down on May 31st

It’s official, T-Mobile issued a press release regarding the end of the Danger Sidekick service as we know it. The servers will go down on May 31st.

Statement: Danger Service for T-Mobile Sidekick

Bellevue, Wash. — Feb. 28, 2011 PST

After May 31, 2011, the Danger Service (a subsidiary of Microsoft) used by T-Mobile Sidekick customers for data services will no longer be available on Sidekick devices.

T-Mobile will provide offers for our Sidekick customers before May 31, 2011, to help make an easy transition from their existing Sidekick device to a new device. We will have more information to share about these offers with our customers in the weeks ahead.

To ensure the best possible transition for our loyal Sidekick customers, an enhanced Web tool is available on myT-Mobile.com to easily export their personal data, including contacts, photos, calendar, notes, to-do lists, and bookmarks, from the Danger service to a new device, computer, or a designated e-mail account. An application is also available in the Sidekick Catalog to make it easy to export personal data to the Sidekick’s memory card. Many T-Mobile stores can transfer data from that card to a new T-Mobile device if the customer brings in the memory card and Sidekick.

I can’t help but be a little sad. We all knew this day was coming, but now we know when. Enjoy the last few months, and here’s hoping the Sidekick 4G can live up to the expectations that the previous Sidekicks set.

Knew the end was coming when T-Mo devices started working on any carrier … been using one in Australia on Optus for a while now.

Sad but all good things come to an end 🙁

This is ridiculous. SO the service is just going to go POOF? What happens to all the accounts I have signed up through my T-Mail email address? There’s no way I can remember them all, I’ve had the sidekick for what, almost 10 years now.

This is just absurd. They should offer us some kind of alternative service at least for the email hosting. Ugh. Well, nothing holding me back from switching to an iPhone now.

I Totally Agree With The Tmail Part. I Asked TMobile On Twitter The Other Day And They Said They’ll Be Announcing Some Stuff In The Coming Weeks. I Still Have The Sidekick Data/messaging Plan For $19.99 But Use An iPhone. I Think The Best They’ll Offer Us Is A Motorola Charm As I Called My Sidekick LX 2009 In The Other Day And Was Immediately Offered The Charm As A Replacement. I Turned It Down Though.

My contract will be up next month, but I think I will stay put until they cut Sidekicks off. I would love to retain my Tmail account, I am willing to pay couple of bucks to have Tmail on the next Sidekick device. Hope T-Mobile is reading this!

I will never conform to android phones

  7. klotz Says:

I hope there’s a good 5-row keyboard on the new SK or at least one of the Android devices picks up a third-party Bluetooth keyboard/case, like they have for the iPhones.

  8. Mulan Says:

    THis is very upsetting.

  9. quikk312 Says:

Terrible!! T-Mobile is doing the same sh*t that Helio did when VM took over. Android is cool, but I actually like Danger and my LX ’09 in which i’ve had ZERO problems with. Besides, my sidekick is my second line anyway but still this just crazy. The $1 a day data plan is nice and my SK works super fast here in Chicago.

Tmo STOP with all the unwanted short notice suprises. Besides, what happens to all the Tmail accounts?

Be sure to get ALL data from ur desktop interface tool BY 5/31. After that EVERYTHING will be gone.

You can still send picz. I been 2wo tmobile && yes this is very true. I am upset I paid 120 for mah 09 && now I cant use mah aim && yahoo are my tmail.

  15. MJChappell Says:

There should be a big time discount on the new sidekick to loyal sidekick customers. The dollar a day worked great, keyboard function..GREAT. this shut down sucks !!!. Don’t like the iphone, don’t like android either. Maybe because I haven’t use it, but.. I use my Sidekick just for emailing, texting, instant messaging. All contacts, easy to forward emails…everything good about the Sidekick, then they want to improve it, but then discontinue all the other devices. WTF !!

  16. CROE93 Says:

I’m a little confused here. I’m on the Orange Network [The phone is unlocked] however I don’t use the internet [what with it not working due to the phone being unlocked]

When this “Shutdown” happens does that mean the phone will no longer work e.g. I won’t be able too make calls or text people?

  17. CROE93 Says:

Ok. So I just did a little research & apparently you WILL still be able too make & receive calls/texts. PHEW. I panicked for a moment as I’ve only just gotten my Sidekick Slide

“The bottom line is that Sidekick devices will still be able to send and receive phones calls and text messages after May 31, 2011 but that’s about it. You’ll need to move to a new handset in order to have data services. You’ll need to move your data away from Danger servers prior to that date and to help with that, T-Mobile has set up a specialized website at Sidekick.t-mobile.com/transition to help customers move data over to a new device.”
