Some Users Are Getting Data Back

We’re still waiting for the official word from Microsoft/Danger that they promised us “on Monday”, but we’re hearing a few people report that they magically got their data back. Posts over on the official T-Mobile forum (and an uncensorable thread started on the new skfail.com) are giving us some hope that maybe all this data isn’t truly lost.

tommyd2107 says:

I was just on my phone and when I got off my phone all my contacts returned. I do not know if this will last for long but the site of my contacts returning is encouraging.

dariahna says:

The same thing happened to me…I shut my phone off several times without removing the battery…voile’! My contacts returned!

generalblue says:

Got my contacts back too! My phone froze up on me and since I have already lost everything anyways, I just took the battery out and put it back in. Once my phone was on about 5 minutes later I checked my address book for some reason and they were all there. I saved all my contacts to my simcard.

Anyone else out there have any luck?

Another tip that is being reported on poweredbydanger.com that is unofficial, not 100% tested, try at your own risk, might just work, etc. is if you have an old device that has your contacts and info you might be able to do a reverse sync (i.e. device to server). Make sure your old device is turned off, plug it into the wall, remove the battery, insert your SIM, replace the battery, power up, and cross your fingers. With any luck it’ll update Danger’s servers with this info, and then you can switch back to your newer Sidekick which will pull it back down. This is at your own risk and should only be tried after you’ve backed up all the contents on that old device. If you do try this, let us know if it works for you.

Well, I kept my phone on all week. Used the tips here to backup my contacts and notes via email on Saturday night.

Woke up Sunday morning and all my data was gone. My phone was never off. I never reset it. Microsoft did something on the backend that wiped my SK.

I also lost my custom ringtones I uploaded in the CSK days with my dev key. So the whole datastore for all my apps are gone as well. (game saves, weather locations, etc)

    Pretty pissed off.

  4. mike Says:

mike : so when its time to pay my bill i can call and say i lost all my money and it will be ok?
~Norman L: No, but if you are having difficulties with paying a bill on time, you are able to set up payment arrangements.

  5. Heath Says:

If this is what they’ve done, then good on them, but I’m not being allowed to get a new phone at an upgrade price because of it.

Honestly, I think I deserve being able to upgrade my phone despite eligibility just because of the TRAUMA of this alone.

  6. Alessandra Says:

Wow..this is good news but..I don’t think mine will come back and I’m one of those users that lost it all.

  7. Arshley Says:

I know this isnt what anyone wants to hear, but i never lost anything, no date, no notes, no contacts nothing. Yeah, i was doing the “2 DOT dance” but i never lost anything, i turned my phone off one day, and when re powered i still had all my contacts. it also rebooted by its self and i was so scared. but so far still good. Has anyone heard of People NOT loosing anything?

  8. Max Says:

Well, i called T-Mobile and they actually tod me how to sync back to the server also. They told me from the main screen press the menu button and scroll down to power off and and when it pops up to power off click “power off” and then after its turned off press the power button and it’ll sync back to the server but in the csr’s own words he said it’s “very tedious”

  9. lozofromRI Says:

i didnt lose anything either bcuz i used to use airplane mode to toggle the data…i never turn the phone off…3 of my friends lost everything and still havent gotten it back…and even tho i still have everything we are all going to tmobile to see if we can get new phones bcuz microsoft seems to be ruining everything for the sidekick

I lost nothing. And I can turn off my phone and still have everything.
I think the only time you loose everything is when your phone goes dead or you take out the battery.

i have lost my data for 2 days but i have had it back for bout a week and 2 days now and no problems involoving information has yet to happen for me 😀

  12. DJ Says:

nope I’ve removed my battery and everything & when i turned it back i still had my contacts but still no web browsing

  13. Alessandra Says:

To Travis, you can let your Sidekick die, but don’t let it stay dead for more than a few days or your stuff will be gone, I know this from experience.

Initially that was me too, then Sunday night I was emailing off my bookmarks to back them off and my phone restarted itself. Bookmarks are gone, contacts, notes are gone… emails were initially gone but came back after a couple hours. Praying the rest comes back too.

  16. Shorty Says:

    Got my notes back.

  17. fu**uMCRO$oft Says:

Atleast we are getting a month of data free..but I want a new phone and I will NEVER buy a winmo phone in the future.a##holes!!!

  18. Heath Says:

T-Mobile gave me the run around on upgrade elligibility twice now. They say the reports of it are “unofficial”. I told them I’d cancel and switch to a different service, and they recommended me to the “loyalty department” before I did so. They said the loyalty department handles cancellations.

Odd name for something I’m about to be disloyal to. I’m honestly more POed about this eligibility fiasco than I am the data loss.

  19. KevinO Says:

My phone was off for a month but I just got it back on in the midst of this whole death of sidekick thing. because my phone wasnt connected to the network for so long, when my phone came back on it tried to make me” sign in” but my username and password wouldnt work..i still have all my contacts and scuh so can anyone let me know hwats going on?

  20. Wicked1 Says:

I had lost nothing, went to my sister’s house last night, my nephew knocked down my phone, knocked my battery out, and now I have nothing but my emails. I was so fuckin pissed, I still am pissed. I’m glad I copied my most important numbers to my SIM but, more than $50 of my contacts are now losts, notes, bookmarks, everything.

  21. ex-slidekick user (sk09) Says:

I haven’t gotten anything back, I’m till even loosing stuff even when powering off properly

  22. Heath Says:

Is it odd that I’m a bit unhappy they’ve actually fixed it?

I mean lets be honest — the Sidekicks as we know them are dead. Instead of having a good, solid reason to kill this thing and get Sidekick users over on other devices painlessly, this reported “data recovery” is going to make the device limp on now, like some kind of zombie with a broken leg.

My email functionality has returned, but my address book is still filled with the “new” addresses I’ve loaded into it (albiet everything is doubled now). Hence, my data still hasn’t come back, and I’m not being given the upgrade elligibility bonus others have gotten. And I still have 11 months left on my contract, all thanks in part to a T-Mobile warranty fiaso they screwed me over on.

If they’re aiming to make us happy, I’m not feeling it.

  23. Carrie17x Says:

WOW, i actually got Half my contacts back & it’s running alot smoother!…sadly i didn’t get my notes back. and the download catalog aint working yet …but hey…We making progress!!!

  24. chinzo Says:

  25. Mike R Says:

still have no contacts and my internet hasnt been working since the outage but my aim and facebook work. this shit is wack lol

  26. recognizedakick Says:

I had restarted my phone and SOME of my contacts came back which made me happy. I just had to add some others and reinstall my bookmarks and such. However, today…TMOBILE restarted my phone and now my data is lost all over again!! My bookmarks are gone,I can’t sign into all my messenger apps and some of my contacts got deleted!! Whyyyyyyy do they do this to me??

    I say:

I tried this exactly the way it was suggested and lemme say that IT DID NOT WORK!!! Everything remained the exact same. The good news is that I didnt lose anymore data then I needed other than having to reset all my settings such as vibrates and bookmarks and such but those were already gone anywayz. My contacts and notes I re-entered stayed. So it didnt hurt to try this but it certainly didnt help. Just in case anyone wanted to know.

  28. Arshley Says:
