T-Mobile Giving Customers New Phones

We’re hearing a number of reports from people that T-Mobile is shouldering the brunt of this disaster (which is truly Microsoft’s fault) by letting customers upgrade to new phones. The reports in our comments are mixed, but it seems like some people are getting a new G1 or a new MyTouch 3G and are paying a discounted rate or even getting it free. What’s more important is that we’re hearing many of these customers are being given the data plan at the $19.99 rate many of us are grandfathered in for with the Sidekick. There are also reports that people are being let out of their contract if they have a Sidekick, but we’re also hearing that they may not be allowed to do that anymore. I guess it depends on who you talk to and when as I’m sure things at T-Mobile are changing rapidly.

I’m holding out hope, but if you’re calling T-Mobile to switch, let us know your experience!

UPDATE: “Free” seems to be more of a rumor than truth. It looks like the norm for most people is that they are getting to upgrade to a phone at the upgrade price you see on T-Mobile.com ($129.99 for a G1, $149.99 for a MyTouch, etc). You’ll probably be required to sign a contract, but should be able to keep the $19.99 data plan. This is even for people that had just renewed their contract with a purchase of the Sidekick LX 2009. Not sure if people out of contract are getting any special treatment on top of this to keep them as a T-Mobile customer.

    As soon as you get a CS rep on the phone, first thing you need to do is tell them you are a Sidekick user and that you wish to speak to a “Account Specalist”

    CS Reps dont have the ability to rectify this.

    Im talking to a bitchy customer service rep right now and she won’t even transfer me over to a account specialist.She says she has heard nothing of tmobile giving out free g1s/mytouchs to customers. WTF are you people telling the customer service represetentatives?

    I switched over 2 days ago. They do offer a discounted data phone with a 2 year contract extension. But the data plan is 34.99. They said I wasn’t allowed to keep my 19.99 data plan because the 19.99 plan doesn’t work with the G1, they gave me.

    just talked to CS and they’re offering me a full discount on a phone…not free…maybe next time i call i can be more demanding but almost $350 off which isnt a kick in the nuts…ps ALL SIDEKICKS ARE TEMPORARILY OUT OF STOCK ON THE TMOBILE WEBSITE…i guess this goes along with them pulling them from the shelves at the stores…hmmmmmm

    I just talked to a tmobile specialist and she told me that close to 1/3 of the the tmobile community are Sidekick users. That being said she also told me that tmobile was also going to release a few more sidekicks in the next 12 months. She mentioned that one would be released in at the end of this year/early next year. I also asked her about where I can find more sources on this and she said much of what she was telling me was pretty confidential stuff and she couldn’t say too much more. She told me the SKLX09 is not the last Sidekick and tmobile would not destroy a successful phone. -also I was told that the new sidekicks will be “revamped” and the LX09 is probably the least upgraded sidekick. -it kind of sounded like that because Microsoft purchased danger that they now have more money to fund this Sidekick legacy. But who knows. She could have been talking about project pink which was just trashed.
    The lady I spoke with knew her stuff.
    I don’t know how or what people were telling the tmo customer service reps to receive their new phones.

    I called in yesterday and told them very nicely that I wanted to stay with Tmobile just no longer wanted my sidekick which still isnt functioning properly. I am ONLY 3 months away from a full upgrade and she told that there was nothing she could do and I would have to wait 3 months to get a good price on one?? Any suggestions to get my way ppl???

    Your first line of contacting Tmobile are ALWAYS the Customer Service Representatives (CSR) You need to tell them you do not need to speak to them and that you would like to be transferred to an Account Specialist.

    Re: the data plan, dont ask for the Sidekick dataplan, their rebuttal will be valid saying it wont work.

    Your wording needs to be “I don’t want my data plans pricing to change.” This is how I got my plan to stay the same as its always been, jsut with a different phone. Once your done, make sure everything is said that you agreed upon at least twice due to everything being recorded.

    I wont feel safe till my phone is in my hand and I see the changes on my bill. But this is how I have done it and got it done.

    @Holly , shes wrong and you probably should call back. My contract ends around nov 13th and my rep was willing to give me any phone i wanted. she offered any blackberry or andriod device. I said i wanted the cliq, so i asked her to put a note on my account for the full upgrade price for oct 19th. and she also gave me a $50 credit.

    I just checked up on my contract and I have 11 months left, all because when my first Sidekick LX broke they claimed it was water damage (it wasn’t), and forced me to buy a new one and extend a new contract! Rediculous!

    I’m a pretty calm guy, but I’m going to do the online chat and see how pissed off I can sound.

    @holly i talked to a regular representative, and she was offering any phone of my choice for a full upgrade price, which would be regular new 2 year agreement price to a new customer as of now. So if i choose to get any phone i would have gotten it asap before my contract ended.

    I spoke to a Customer Loyalty / Retention rep last night. I was given a G1 free of charge, yes, free; but I did not expect a free phone. I wanted to exchange (and offered to exchange) my SKLX09 which was still under warranty and has a defect (the keys are coming off). She argued with me that the defect I mentioned was damage and not a defect (even though other people on the T-Mobile forums have complained of the same thing happening), but still got me the G1 for free.

    The down side is no matter what, she wouldn’t give me messaging/data for $19.99. Not even $24.99 for data and free messaging.

    I am still waiting on T-Mobile’s official update and hopefully I’ll be able to call in to get my $19.99 rate restored.

    Like I said before, I didn’t want or expect a free phone; I wanted to exchange the faulty Sidekick I have–but ended up getting one.

    @John Settino – I have the LX09 which I got in May as well… today I talked to an Account Specialist and I asked for a free G1 but they didn’t want to give it to me – offered the Shadow as an free exchange – how’d you swing that? I would be happy with a working reliable G1 and some bill credits.

    so I got a MyTouch to replace it.
    and now I hear this.
    Looks like I have to call TMobile
    and ask for the cheaper data plan.

    I’m totally excited right now, I just got off the phone with an account specialist @ t-mobile.When I first got on the phone and was telling the CSR about the upgrade he didn’t know anything about it.So I spoke with a AS and they gave me two My touch for 149 with and extension on my contract witch I’m ok with….The only thing that changed was my data service got changed from 19.99 to 24.99 and I’m totally ok with that as well.

    I looking forward to getting my new phone and seeing if its going to be a good fit.I was going to get a new phone for my bday but this just worked out fine.I’m a total side kick junkie it hurt my heart to do it but its time I change.

    I called T-mobile. After asking for an account specialist the girl said that SHE was one. Then I said “Well then I’m sure you know about my sidekick issues”
    Her reply, “Hold on while I look up the information for you”
    AKA she was not an account specialist.
    They refused to do anything at all for me so I asked about cancelling my contract. Customer Retention said that they would offer me a PARTIAL DISCOUNT TOWARDS A NEW PHONE. No grandfather data plan. I couldn’t cancel my contract without paying $200, either.
    I’m pissed.

    Well i just off the phone with t-mobile,The first person that i talked too was the CSR and he didn’t have any idea about so i asked to speak to a ASR.So i was telling her about upgrading my phone at a discount rate and Melissa was very help,I got two My Touch for 149 and i’m totally excited about that.I should have my phones by thursday.One for me and one for my sister.I’m a total sidekick but i’m over it all ready and them telling you one thing and then changing it.Hopefully i will love My touch as much as i loved my side kick….When you call just make sure that you ask to speak to an account specialist representative cause the Customer service rep have no idea about nothing.

    Customer Service lady in the live chat gave me the run around for an hour and a half. Agreed with what I was saying, but would then go on a tangent about “Have you tried Menu+L?” and stuff like that. I said “No, I don’t want Menu L, my data is GONE, I want a upgrade price for a more reliable phone!” and she eventually sent me to a forums page that said an update would be coming out today, and that T-Mobile reps and salesmen weren’t allowed to help anyone until this message went out.

    This was a business move by microsoft/danger/tmobile to make us upgrade our data plans to the 34.99 plan….They keep trying to sell me a g1 phone or a mytouch for 149.99 instead of fixing the problem….I am grandfathered in at 19.99 for my sidekick data plan which is no longer offered by tmobile. I hate Tmobile because I was using my sidekick for business and they caused me to lose money…Im sure If i didnt pay my bill they would cut my phone out. They still havent fixed the problem and its going on two weeks…this is unacceptable and we should all sue them!!!!

    Alright so my situation maybe different. I ordered the upgrade the day of the begining of the outage because I wasn’t going to be with out needed service for this long. So I call in tonight speak with an account specialist and we worked out that id have to return the G1 and get back on the sidekick data plan for 19.99 then reorder the G1 at a discounted price. Its a shame I have to go through all this… butta hopefully. In the short time I’m with the sidekick my data will return so I will be able to save my contacts?! That’s wishful thinkin!

    I just called T Mobile, I didn’t know I had to ask for an Account Specialist. But this is what happened, I told him I lost all my data, I have been a loyal T Mobile customer for years, a $20 credit is not good enough for losing data that had survived thru 3 different editions of the sidekick, and I asked him about these additional incentives to convince people to stay with T Mobile? I also asked him what if I wanted to get out of my contract? He gave the spiel “I’m sorry to hear that”, dadad. He asked was the data working now, I told him yeah, but my data is gone, he’s all saying that I will be credited $20 for the service, he kept coming back to the phone has been working, saying it’s Danger’s servers that are at fault, blah blah. Asked me what phones I was interest in, I said MyTouch, he looks up my account, says I can get it at the discounted rated ($167 w tax and everything) but I’m like I’m up for an upgrade that would be the price I would have gotten it for anyway if this fiasco didn’t happen. So I’m like thats no anything additional. He was like “I know what has been going around the internet, there’s nothing we can do to make these phones cheaper, he told me that if I wanted to get out of my contract I would have to pay $200. I am interested in having my data plan stay $20 though I’m gonna call back and ask for an Account Specialist.

    Now there are reports that data is coming back for some user. I would like to get a free phone if I could, but I don’t really want any of the phones they have now, I want a keyboard but I don’t want the G1, I was planning to get the the Motorola Cliq. I’m thinking that if I am gonna have to pay should I just wait for the Cliq next month and still get it at my upgrade price. And the data plan is only supposed to obe $25 for the Cliq. I don’t know I’m gonna call back.

    Yeah, apparently, they can tell, or will know who didn’t get all their personal data back, without us, the customer, doing anything. I still think those who did lose data should call and let them know, so it will be like a note on your account, that will then be verified. We have to wait 14 days from today, while Danger are now trying to recover data, before T Mobile will start sending these credits out. Im assuming some threat of legal action on TMo’s part, against Microsoft, has started this “data recovery” mission, because a few days ago they were telling us our data was gone for good. T Mo wants to make sure the personal data can be recovered before they give out all these $100 credits to who knows how many users, in addition to the free phones and discounts they have already given out to dozens of users. They are about to lose a lot of money. Hopefully I’ll be getting that $100 card just in time, in addition to my full upgrade discount, for the Motorola Cliq which comes out Nov. 2, this is what I am planning to be my next phone

    Well, the free phone instances seem to be few and far between. I’ve called a few times in effort, and didn’t get anywhere. I think there will be no free phones, that was only viable why the data services were not workin (on 2 dots), I’m assuming. I don’t know anything about the prepaid users, I’m assuming that if you lost your personal data you should still be able to get the $100 credit, you can use it towards anything: bills, phone, accessories

    I spoke with the loyalty department today and I heard basically the same thing everyone else did, the thing about it is I was already at the end of my contract so the upgrade price doesn’t benefit me. The 100 dollar credit doesn’t count if you switch now and they are able to get the data back, so it’s a **** shoot. I keep hearing all the jokes about the sidekick being a childs device but I am 34 years old and have 4th stage cancer so the sidekick was simple enough that I could do it through a chemo haze but with enough functionality to keep up with me :) I lost countless contacts that I will not be able to get back, my bucket list, song list for my funeral, poems, pics and much more. Why did I store so much? Because I could bring it everywhere and it was “SECURE” so I didn’t have to worry about backing up. Where’s the justice in this?

    I just got a G1 for 147.77 and my contract doesn’t end until mid february. I had to call 3 times, the 1st time I called the AS said I could get it for 375 and told me to wait until February for a big discount. The 2nd person this time a girl told me the same but said the price was 350. The third time I spoke to a guy named Zach he must of been Australian or something because he had a accent. I told him I had a LX and I wanted to change phones and since he was a sidekick user hisself he gave me a discount.

    have chatted with tmol yesterday, and they said they could only give me partial discount blah blah 370 for a g1. after a but of telling them i feel as if my hand is being forced to cancel since 370 for a new phone vs cancel for 200. She said sorry i feel that way(ive been tmol for about 7 years now) and right before she signed off she said i should try callin CS and see if they could do something for me, since she was limited.Tried calling today and complained about numurous issues with my sidekick since the release of LX09, and that ive been looking the other way to little nick nack things, IE lagging in between bubbles, textes and emails being delayed sometimes hours, access Facebook and twitter freezes my phone, and now the outage was the last straw. Asked about a new phone said she could only give me partial, I said wow so it looks like canceling would be the better opition, she asked if I wanted to leave, I said no Id perfer to stay with tmol and give them my buisness, since i understand this wasnt entirely there fault and this is more a micro/danger, but i still do not have any faith in sidekick anymore. I havent lost as many contacts as other people but rather you have 10 contacts or 1000, there still as vauluable to me as the 1000 are to others! She put me on hold, came back and said as a 1 time favor they r going to waive the ETF due the situation with the sidekicks. So i guess they dont even want peoples buisness anymore, cheaper to give me a new phone i would of thought. Told her id think about it and to note it on my account. Debating opening a new line since im on a family plan with my gf get the G1 for 98 bucks at walmart and then cancel my sidekick line, new numbers are fun anyways….any suggestions folks? should I call back and try and get the 19.99 and a free g1 or take the free ETF and run with it?????

    I asked to speak with an account specialist. They asked why and I told them I was thinking of cancelling my account. They transferred me and I told them for the price I was given in a store (349.99) that I could cancel my account and switch to at&t with an iphone for 50 refurbished or 150 brand new. I spoke with Holly and she gave me the mytouch 3g for basically free. I won’t recieve a bill until nov 16th, but I will have my 100 credit by then so it will end up being only 50 because she gave it to me at new customer price and then credited my account. I couldnt keep my same data plan pricing, but I still think I got a good deal considering the idiots i’ve been speaking with for the past 2 weeks on the phone or in stores that would even speak with me about upgrading.

    Take the ETF and run the G1 is only 48.88 at walmart and the mytouch3g is 98.88 now

I can say call mom and tadaaaa now calling mom.lx09 didnnt sync with my microsoft sync but yet had micro hands in it…..andddddd I found my old sk3 and I have all my contacts saved there

    So I called Tmobile like 8 times Im from PR I even called USTMobile…but nothing they said that no one has change their sidekicks for G1 or mytouch at a discounted price…that they don’t have that information..they said that they could give a MT3G for 365 I said that’s 2 much so they offered to pay it in 4 bills I said no tnhnx….so please wait till danger resolves the problem..ok but I nees my data !!!     Both my partner and myself have Sidekick 2s. We have kept them for years after our contracts ended and have the 30$ unlimited data/unlimited text plan. She does not use voice (is Deaf) but I use <5 minutes per month (voice is not my primary communications method, but I like to have the option so do pay-per-minute).

    The store said my plan for the G1 would be 35$. A little more than now, but for the features (and being able to actually back up my data) I could live with it.

    Calling t-mobile I eventually got bounced to their loyalty department. Not only would I get the 35$ charge … but I would need to pay $20 for a voice plan! It also sounded like even Deaf people would need to do that to get a new phone. Then to add insult to injury, they were oh-so-gracious and willing to sell the phone itself to a longtime customer (who has convinced others to buy it) for the same price a new customer off the street could buy it for!

    the guy i talk to did this. i got the my MyTouch 3G for 150.00 i going to pay it out over 4 months, i going to pay $35 for unlimited data and unlimited text. and i get unlimited mins for 50. i was paying like $60 for 600 mins. so the data went up $15, but i got unlimited mins for $10 less. So im going to be paying $5 more a mouth. and i got a new contract for 2 years.

    I freaking called t-mobile over the course of a few months with nothing but problems with this phone. I have spent maybe 4 hours within the past week talking to them either online or on the phone. I have not gotten any solution to any issue I have been having. (Phone crashing; black screen, green letters, red “x” when it came back on, I see script as my t-mail, my bookmarks were erased, and my icons all jumbled together. My keyboard literally rubbing off my phone, and entire back of my phone peeling even with replacement cover.) Four different representatives…. troubleshooting and no solution. The only thing they offered me was to get a replacement sidekick by paying 100 dollars. I REFUSE to pay 100 dollars for a phone that will do all the EXACT same things. I was even more upset when they tried to UPSELL ME the Motorola Cliq for 200 dollars, after I explained that I just want to get rid of my phone, even if i need to replace it with a lesser phone. One and a half hours later, no resolution. I have no idea how you guys are getting new phones, or huge discounts, or free phones, or anything.

    I wish that they would give discounted prices for flex pay. I’ve actually had tmobile for 4 years just under my dads name and jjust recently got it under my name , but doesn’t have credit cause im only 19. I want a blackberry but im not paying full price for one.

    i had 2 defective sk08s sent to me for an exchange in a 30 day (over the time of the outage) so they offered me a free upgrade to the dash…. (even tho my contract isnt up till NEXT october) they called this a “multiple”… i argued alittle, finally got a supervisor, nice guy…. and he offered me the g1 for $50 and $24.99 data plan…. not bad, took the deal.
