T-Mobile Halts Sales of Sidekick Tomorrow
It’s been a good run Danger Sidekick, but T-Mobile says you’re done.
“As T-Mobile looks to further innovate and raise the bar for the next generation of the T-Mobile Sidekick, as of July 2, the Sidekick LX and Sidekick 2008 will no longer be available through T-Mobile, including retail stores, care, telesales and online.”
This doesn’t mean that the Sidekick service will be stopped on July 2nd. T-Mobile hasn’t said anything about the longevity of that. This just means you’ll have to buy a Sidekick elsewhere. But there are hints that the Sidekick line may carry on (at least in name). Everyone’s chattering about this Sidekick Twist, which may be what T-Mobile has up their sleeve.
Oh, and for those that haven’t been following the news elsewhere, the Kin is done for as well.

Although I will miss Danger, I hope they keep the SK brand going. The phones were always easy to use andx great for the hearing impaired. I’ve never been a fan of touch screen phones (not knocking them, i just prefer a real keyboard). The MyTouch Slide is a great phone. I recently went to it when my LX died. I would love to stay true to the SK line if another comes out though.

The “next gen” sidekick will be a sidekick in name only. Just another android phone. This looks like the final end of the hiptop as we knew it (Danger OS and all). Sad sad day.
Anyone here really think TMo will let people keep their sidekick data plans after they turn off the backend servers (Keep in mind that the sidekick data service is provided by Danger/MS, so even if TMo has a new device they call the sidekick, the days are numbered for being able to keep using existing devices… I hope it’s a high number, though).
All I know is I’m going to keep using my Sidekick LX until the day they turn the servers off and after that, if they want to make me get a $30 data plan with whatever new smartphone, I’m going somewhere else (Verizon maybe).

Why laugh? There’s a newer, better android device coming out for one carrier or another every couple of months, at least. You’ll ALWAYS have a “I could have gotten X if I waited a few more months” situation.
Now, I’m not saying the Sidekick Twist won’t be a cool android phone, but as far as the “Sidekick” part of it goes, it’ll only be carrying the name because T-Mobile wants to leverage the name brand and to get their sidekick user base to stick with them instead of moving to another carrier (which I suspect a lot of people will do, anyways, once T-Mobile finally lets the Danger/MS ran backend servers get shut down).
Without the real sidekick, the only reason I’d stick with TMo is because of my grandfathered data and phone plans.

I am too but not as much as her since it’s not mine, she has last year’s model which is the 3GS. I”m still an adult…And still have my sidekick. I love the phone. I might not use all the services like before. But the keyboard is what keeps me around. It took me 3 years to find a phone. My problem then is still the same problem now. My fingers are just too big. Touch screen’s don’t work and blackberry’s have never worked for me. I mean could write my papers while mobile on my sidekick. I don’t see another phone on the market that will workout for me.
I was thinking about going over to the Droid X for Verizon. But its all touch…

Mine has been acting this way so much lately its crazy. Like:
I’ll be on the net or texting and my service drops. At times it may even say the sim card isn’t inserted ( SIM…?…SIM..?..). Or I get full bars with the “7″ but no “G”, just phone logo in its place and my phone says “emergency calls only”.
Then after multiple resets, its back to normal.
Anyone elses service problems been any similar to mine?

I have been kicking since the color, and I’ve noticed that everyime a new sidekick comes out, the one being replced acts bonkers….bonkers to the point that it needs to be replced…..bonkers to the point that you don’t wanna replace with the same model, but with the newer one. And since there is no new model to speak of, just yet, I think its t-mobile or danger saying switch to another phone. Maybe its a sign that the twist is near. I swear its not a coincidence. This happened with every kick I’ve had, as well as a few friends that kicked with me. I think danger used to do it to get the new phones sold at a much higher pace

I’ve seemed to notice this too. My sidekick 3 did the same, so did my slide (WORST MODEL EVER!), and now my LX is acting like it has a horrible case of down syndrome. Its crazy cuz this started like a month ago. My sidekick had terrible service for about 3 weeks in places where I normally would get all 5 bars and the “G7″. Now service goes in and out.
I hope the Sidekick Twist comes out soon. I want it to have the swivel screen SO BADLY! A slide would be cool, but it won’t feel the same.

BUT, we all know this is not anything closely related to project emerald.

What mite this do to our data plans since htc is making this phone and its running android os, and not danger os? Would our sidekick twist be fully compatible with our android phone? I believe this list is legit. And remember back a month ago when people thought this was the Galaxy S? I never lost hope. Plus that post when tmo said they are working on the “next iteration of the sidekick franchise” pretty much is as much confirmation as we need right now. All we need is a picture of the phone. The HTC Vanguard is nothing in comparison to the HTC Emerald….have u seen the pictures? The screen is 3.7 inches and it has a 4 row keyboard. No front facing camera, no gingerbread, and it resembles the mytouch slide.
HTC Emerald is gonna be a powerhouse of a beast.

Well I can’t even front, the 4g Evo is a great phone. But what I noticed is its just Sprint’s version of the HTC HD2 on Tmobile. Now imagine a phone like that with sidekick branding and a swivel screen and a superb qwerty. Right now its the Galaxy S vs whatever else….but one thing I noticed in the commercial wuz kinda odd, if sum didn’t know it already:
When the front of the phone is shown, then it has a picture of the Samsung “Galaxy S” logo, at the bottom of the screen is T-Mobile listed as a certified carrier. We knew this was for sure because a lot of people thought it was project emerald. BUT….
Did anyone notice that Sprint was listed as a carrier also? This basically makes Emerald the Twist bacause of speculation…..if a lot of people don’t remember, people either said that the phone wuz an HTC handset running Android, or the Galaxy S. Now the Galaxy S is out and there’s still no sign of Emerald. Along with the oncoming hints dropped by T-Mobile being backed by months of speculation, the Sidekick Twist is becoming a reality.
Oh, and if anyone payed attention to Sharp’s new handset, the FX….I found it odd that its named AND modeled EXTREMELY closely after Sidekick and the Sidekick “LX”…(LX=FX). Doesn’t it look like a Sidekick Slide or a small 1st gen midnight blue LX?

if u google sidekick twist or project emerald and look at different forums, some people were saying that the twist is the galaxy s, which is now false. But still, now since we know that the HTC Vanguard is the Vision supposedly, now all we need, or want, is Emerald. Quite frankly, I believe we’re gonna receive our first look at this phone before August.
Quick note though: if its an all touch device like the Droid x, I won’t even think of buying it.

no one won’t really know anything…if anything aim is working like **** for me…like when i sign in only 4 poeple or so are signed in..then SLOWLY people starting signing in 1 by 1..its rather annoying…i sent myself a message on my itouch and got it a good minute later and this is WITH 3G and FULL bars…its rather ridiculous…and i keep getting system messages saying someone is signed under my name..i changed my password and im still getting the same thing…but it happends to be the aim on the sidekick itself because when im the only one on the cpu it works great…its sad how they seem to downgrade the servers on the sidekick ever since they took it off tmobile…come onnnnnn sidekick twist..

I have more than just a sidekick. I have a Sidekick LX 07, an HTC HD2, and iPhone 3G and a G1. I will probably be down with this phone. If they keep the keyboard as is. I don’t care if they change the OS. But the keyboard is very “key” for me lol. If T-Mobile throws the name on to any phone. I will be moving on. I don’t know where yet.

Well I changed my SIM card and it fixed all my problems. Phone is back to working like before.
But I feel the same. I just like the jump button feature. I was able to basically multitask my *** off with that. None of the Andriod phones really make me run after it. The OS is ok…And touch screens I’m not too into. But 5 row keyboard is a must.

Man, if it has no swivel screen, it’ll be strange looking at basically a “Sidekick” branded Droid X.
If it doesn’t have a 5 row keyboard, it’ll fail as a sidekick, even if its a spiritual successor by the same name. The 5 row is what made this phone legendary.
Oh, and the Danger OS? I STILL THINK IF IT RUNS ANDROID 3 GINGERBREAD, CREATE A CUSTOM OVERLAY THAT HAS A DIAL ROLLER ON TOP OF THE MAIN TOUCH SCREEN.

I went on my LX09 today after 2 weeks of not using it (Cause it started to go slow like you guys been talking about) So I just read like everything from my tmail right now… Well I just gotta say I love the sidekick and all but I stopped and started using my iPhone 3G and my cliq on android 2.1 Android is not that bad guys, it has jump shortcuts like the sidekick (if you have an android phone w/keyboard) and mulitasking is alright.. Id like to keep my sidekick cause the keyboard and Aim really is the best, but lately aim sucks on the sidekick too.. I’m not hating on the the sidekick at all.. It’s just really microshit tht fucked everything up I’m still rollin on the grandfathered unlimited sk plan so I don’t have full fuctionality on my cliq just some stuffs works using the sk apn..
SO yeah just saying.. Try android, its really the best replacement for the sidekick for now.. I went back on my sidekick today cause I miss it.. but I don’t think I’ll be lasting long cause the browser is just really slow which suckss :/

I heard about that too. Once news about the Glacier started to surface, rumors of the Emerald/Sidekick Twist combo began to die. I guess it may just be a “spiritual, branded” Sidekick device instead of a next generation phone.
I mean, hey, im all in for a beast-spec, ****, BIG BIG HUGE screened HTC device. And if u read the article above, they basically do say there’s a “nextgen sidekick coming” right from the mouths….um….fingertips……..uh..computers of T-Mobile themselves. Of course not in those exact words but just read it over.
I don’t think TMo would lie to us, considering two things-
1. The Sidekick line is one of the most popular devices in cell phone history( no lie). Why abandon a cash cow with more potential for it on a new OS?
And
2. One of the main creators of the Sidekicks UI, Andy Rubin, started the Android format. That’s a double deal seeing as how he would be reunited with a device he basically made famous, and seeing as how rapidly the Android UI is picking up, he could design a One-Of-A-Kind Android OS for this Sidekick. It would be a deal.
Then price it at about $379-$400…..phone would be a killer

i think i can wait..that sprint epic 4g’s 5 row keyboard is VERY ****…i dunno why they don’t start making them all 5 ROW…it was like that with the sk’s etc..then they went 4 row which looks kinda cheesy to me..but the epic 4g has done it pretty well!

That’s the thing if I buy a phone I will have to stick with it for a while nd I know if I get it I might regret it later but the thing that will help me decide even better is knowin how long into 2011 will the suposivile android sidekick come out ? :-/

When I was in T-Mobile this afternoon upgrading from LX 2009 to Samsung Vibrant, I asked what happened to the Sidekick line. The sales associate said that ‘as of now, it’s gone, but there are rumors of an android-powered sidekick.’
I waited all summer for news about this ‘android-powered sidekick’, and, suprisingly (not really), nothing new. So I finally went and got the Vibrant, aha. It is actually a pretty amazing phone, i recommend getting it if your contract is up soon.
Sidekick is dead. The amazing generation of phones has come to an end.
