The Sidekick 3 has landed
We apologize for the lack of updates in the last few days. We’ve been playing, proking, and prodding around our Sidekick 3 non-stop since Friday.
With our exploration of the Sidekick 3 and its secrets, we’ve come to realize that there is a ton of functionality that isn’t even being taken of advantage yet. While we can’t reveal these details due to the NDA agreement with Danger, we can say you guys will be very happy with the device within the next few months.
So far we’ve heard three main complaints, (a) ringtones/apps/games, (b) slow browser, (c) battery life.
Ringtones/Apps/Games
Like most people we were a little disappointed to see that apps and ringtones aren’t transferring over, but we kind of understand from a business perspective, it is a new phone. People complaining about the lack of apps and games should be patient. With the Sidekick 3 there were a lot of changes in the OS that require work on these older applications in order to make them work right. Even the splash screen for all apps has to be changed! We hope that all games and apps will be ported over soon, but ultimately it’s up to the programmers to do this. The lack of ringtones, well that’s just T-Mobile and we’re not happy either having to pay for the same ringtones that came free on the Sidekick II.
Slow Browser
Like everyone else we had some difficulty with keeping G and loading webpages the first few days. This has gotten a lot better in the last 24 hours or so. when a webpage does load, boy does it scream! I was so used to switching over to AIM or email while waiting for a webpage to load, and now with some pages I don’t even have time for that. Keep in mind that this is a new device, and I’m sure it’s putting some strain on Danger’s servers. Give them some time to tweak the servers and I’m sure things will be running smoother and faster than ever.
Battery Life
I’ve seen in passing some comments about battery life. Since we haven’t done any conclusive testing, we’re not sure how much merit is in these complaints. We do recommend you charging the battery fully, then letting it drain all the way, rinse & repeat. This will help condition the battery to get the full amount of life out of it. If anyone wants to do some serious battery testing and has results, let us know. We’re talking “I unplugged with 100% battery at 7:23pm, received a phone call for 23 minutes, browsed the web for 15, etc.” type research, not “uhh yeah, it lasted for 5 hours.” Additionally, there are companies already working on new extended life batteries, so those should be out soon.
To wrap things up, we’re very happy with the Sidekick 3. It has lived up to most of its hype, and will only continue to get better. To all those that have received the blessings from UPS and have received their Sidekick 3, we hope you’re enjoying it! For everyone waiting on UPS or the 10th, hang in there.

I got my sidekick 3 on the 29th. I had problems with the web browser too. I would lose the GPRS connection and most of the time it refuses to load web pages. I called T-Mobile on that night, they said that “web browser” is a high volume call and should be resolved by Sunday. . . and Saturday morning, my web browser problem was already solved and loads web pages even faster than the sk2 even I’m not on the EDGE network. I have a feeling that more applications in the Download Catalog will be available in the near future AFTER July 10th when it’s available to EVERYONE.

If you’re holding off on getting one because of the price, just wait till the end of this month. We’ll have the hookup with a dealer who will have them for $99 after rebate if you’re a new T-Mobile customer. I love my sk3. I don t know why some people say that it is not good. I think it is well worth the money, and like most of you say I bet that in a matter of weeks we are going to be finding out new stuff when other people start having them.

Consider this:
-the only people that will buy skii ringtones were previous skii owners
-previous skii owners are your loyal customers, they are the ones that just stood in line to spend $300 to sign up for 2 more years of giving you cell bill money
I KNOW you like ringtone revenue, but, you also like monthly cell revenue as well…. Why would you do something that would specifically make me dislike t-mobile? You are now relying on my love of sidekick to overcome a dislike of t-mobile, that is a dangerous business game…
(fyi, I am not sure if you did market research, but, my guess is that 0.50 or 0.75 would not have been an offensive price for ringtones)

Sorry to burst your bubble but this thing will never stream video. Edge is simply not fast enough to do so and without Wifi built in theres no point.

i have a glitch wit u already dam now i have 2 send ur *** back..lol.. Yo everybody my sk3 kept recharging since yesturday 10:55 am and was still going at 5 pm…..so i took out the battery for an hour and put it back at 7pm and was still charging at 1 am in the morning…sounds like a glitche because ontop of that when i turned it on the battery would go out in 3 hours or less

Yep, I’m getting a new SK3 sent to me this week. Should be here Wednesday. I have a defective battery of course. I should have waited to buy them like 2 months from now when they have worked all the bugs out. So much for waiting, I can’t even use it the way I want to. Geez!

One thing I’ve knoticed, I’ve clicked on a Windows Media link out of curiousity. And it took over 2 to 3.5 mins to load. When it loaded all it showed was a page of code. So I’m guessing there will be a OVA update including video…I may be wrong, but that’s wat I seen…try it for your self. I tried it on my SK2 and it just said this content is not supported. Shoot, other than that; I’m n love with this super fast junk……

um… KoryHutchinson? Im just referring to the SKII ringtones in the catalog — the ones that are included for free on the SKII that are $1.69 if you want to have them on the SKIII… I am not sure how your whole artist economics comments really apply…?
I want them b/c I used a couple as the custom ringtones for some friends. I, and SKII people like me are the only ones likely to buy these ringtones. Hence my comments, tmo is just jerking around their loyal customer base — thats not cool.
Commercial artists (and their ringtones) are an entirely different category.
regarding the $200 “broken-contract” fee, check the paperwork — there is a 15d window to cancel.
btw, I never said I would cancel/return because of the ringtone issue.

Record a New Ringtone
From any ringtone selector, select Record New Ringtone.
The Stand By dialog box appears. To begin your recording select the Start Recording button or press the LEFT SHOULDER button.
While recording, you can CANCEL , Pause , or Stop Recording . When finished, select Stop Recording.
The Recorded dialog box appears. From this dialog box you can review your recording by selecting one of the transport controls: play from beginning, play, reverse fast, forward fast. You can also CANCEL the recording altogether or Re-record .
Once you select Save , you are prompted to name your new ringtone. Type a name in the text field, then select Save .
You can now select this new ringtone from any of the ringtone selectors in any of the applications. Look for your new ringtone in the Imported category.
Note: If you already have 10 ringtones in your Imported category, then you will be prompted to discard one of your existing imported ringtones

I’m sure there will be an OTA that adds the feature to every phone. It will probably be a free download in the catalog in a month or so. People really need to calm down and let the device breath a little air before any updates come out. Its been here less than a week and people already 2want updates. This reminds me of when I got the 360 the day of release and everyong wanted all these features and whing and stuff and now many 360 users are content with the way Microsoft is handling updates so jsut give Danger and T-Mobile some time.

Ok… so that phone case they give you with the phone.. Yea the clip already broke on it. I’ve only had it since thursday haha. Oh well at least the phones doing alright no problems yet(knock on wood). The browser loads pages fast but which your on it it stutters a lot. A lot of mid page freezing.

I don’t know if its network problems or what. But when the page does load(which it does rather speedy) when I’m on the page it freezes and the load disc in the top left corner of the screen spins. It locks up the sk and you can do anything till it stops. Its kinda annoying. I don’t know if this will be fixed or if that’s normal. But I never had it happen with my sk2

Sounds like the same thing that plagued SK2 users. Some app on the phone has a memory leak, probably something you downloaded from the catalog, though since this is a new device, one of the built-in apps might be buggy.
Do a soft reset (press 1 @ 0 at the same time), and that should solve the problem.

i got my sk3 on june 28th been using it since. i’ve had numerous problems like others but the main one is the battery draining so i did bunch of tests here is one that is so off my meter shows 401% remaining (this is after i completely drained it a day before) and charged it up next day and seeing it at 401% and stuck (wont move) so I had to do a hard reset and it shows 95% so here is a screenshot:

I broke the clip on my case too but the kicker is I had to send my Sidekick 3 back because the C button on the keyboard didnt work. I returned the whole thing so I would get a new phone rather than doing an exchange and getting a refurbished one…

Hey everyone I have a problem want to see if anyone else has this issue. After awhile of flipping the screen up the plastic on the top corner left will pop out and need to be popped back in, is this normal ?

yah i had that corner pop out issue as well, though its only happened once so far. This also resulted in the screen getting stuck on the side keys when i was flipping it open. Also does anyone know how to resolve the issue of not being able to sign into certain sites. I regularly sign into xanga.com but now with the new phone when i attempt to sign in it just reloads the signin page as opposed to signing in. I tried to load my sk II since that used to work there but now thats having the same issue. Whats the deal?

status update:
After 3 full discharges/recharges, bettery is much better — it went from an 8 hr day to ~22 hr day, still reads 372% battery full after every soft boot.
My daily usage is pretty much: IM frequently, browse occasionally, phone for about 1 hr.
Need to soft-boot a lot because the phone FREQUENTLY loses G and that seems to be the only way to get it back.

The OTA if their is one comming, will NOT have a “record-a-ringtone” because t-mobile disabled that option since 98 I think. I’m not to sure on the year but they have made it so you can’t do that as a intentional option. Some phones can record and then set as ringtone but its not a ringtone recorder so some phones have loop holes. So I’m just saying don’t hold your breath for ringtone recording or making mp3s as ringtones.

Also…people are AMAZINGLY UNREALISTIC…the phone isnt even officially out and they’re asking for OTA’s and new features…they’re not gunna spend a lot of time making the phone function to its full capability if they dont even have the whole consumer audience available.

While Risking Getting stoned for complementing the MDA (this is in fact a hiptop3 site) a phone with more features than the SK3 would be that…the MDA. it does has less luster than the Sk3 but hey…and i am aware you want more than just text and browsing…thats why i said “IF AND ONLY IF you want to focus more on texting and Web Browsing” i think the MDA can provide what ur phone has, and what the SK3 has together! BUT…with less dazzle. And if the video isnt a big deal then why bash the SK3 for not having it? makes no sense…
ALL in All…SK3 GREAT PHONE! good for people that enjoy its Numerous, albeit, limited capabilities.
Sony Ericsson…GREAT PHONE! good for people who want a greater amount of general capabilities…in less space lol

nah…again after the SK3 comes out officially there will problably be a lot more accessories and features available…and i know how you feel..im like freaking out..i had my sidekick 2 for 11 months and not one scratch on the screen…i had this screen protector…perfect fit and non-noticeable…then one day my screen cracked while skateboarding…not much use for the protector now eh??….but yeah..the SK3 screen protector is highly needed…

I have a small question for R Kritikal, cause you seem to know a lot.
If like you say the sidekick 3 is a sidekick 2.5 and it is so far behind other phones that came out before it. And you wouldn’t spend $300 for a sidekick, that is just famous for its name. Then WHY ARE YOU IN THE SIDEKICK FORUM ?

Great… I’m #201…… Like harlemz_dominican said, we want to use everything that the phone has to offer. It had MMS and other features, but they were taken away. Maybe if the manual didn’t say we HAD these features, we wouldnt get mad and complain.
Say you wanted to buy a computer from Sony. Sony says it comes with a screen, speakers, keyboard, mouse, and cpu. Lets just say Best buy is the only store you can buy it from. So you buy it but you only get the cpu and the mouse… Wouldn’t you get mad……….??

i ordered the whole front face one, good value for only a few dollars more.
mine is on reserve at tmobile. my bro’’s gf works at a store and she has a sk3 on hold for me as well as a hipcase, just like the old leather ones they had for the sk2

The batter draining problem, is not really a problem…when I got my sk3 the sales rep told me my battery would drain quicker than on the sk3 supposedly because EDGE never stops looking for service so it eats the battery up….in my mind I am now thinking, if this is the case then how come it randomly disconnects lol…but yeah that might be it…or maybe I’m wrong n ur battery is really fucked up…what do I know??
My battery is lasting a long time so no complaints…I use the mp3 player a lot so can’t complain about battery life, its not an Ipod…the sleep feature is great tho I lasted with one stick of battery all night and didn’t die…the blinking trackball is rather annoying though

Is anyone else (who has their sk3) finding the close quarters of the X and hang up end button annoying while trying to jump pages? They don’t light up on the web and they’re so close I find myself exiting the browser often also I have rather big fingers…

they are invisishields. they are amazing. i have one for my ipod and it really is invisible. people always ask how my ipod is in such good shape. and they dont go around corners if thats what you are asking so yes it will fit perfectly. meaning you wont have weird folds over the corners because the corners arent on the invisishield!

After just having received my Sidekick 3 for 14 days, there was a short in my Sidekick. After draining the battery and turning off, I attempted to recharge it but received a message saying that after a few minutes of charging the unit will automatically turn itself back on. Well the unit has been plugged in for the last 3 hours and no longer does anything and not even show that message. Replacing the battery and charger did not help as well. Get ready for some of the problems with the Sidekick to hit the news.

Maybe its just me but its waaaaay past the tenth, and all I got was 2 or 3 apps and 2 or 3 games….seen no comercials… THE ALARM CLOCK gees, couldn’t even put that…I love this phone though…my everyday planner,24/7 contact with my friends, life saving “ok” entertainment in extreme boring situations, news cath up, weather of the day, works well with myspace, bummed out on hotmail though…can’t really complain much, other than the fact that tmobile would block most of the goodie features, hopefully they’ve considered and will give us some on august 11th,…..great phone, no dropped calls so far( have it since the 28th of june) everyone has different needs so if ur hating the sk3 just keep it to urself
