T-Mobile to End All Sidekick Sales?

Is this it, the end of the Sidekick era? BoyGeniusReport posted some rumors they received through a tipster that say T-Mobile will slowly be phasing out the Sidekick line as the new MyTouch Slide approaches. Nobody has confirmed this tip yet, but it’s not too far fetched. We’ll let you know as we hear more.

I hope this is not true either. There’s nothin like a sidekick!

Well..they don’t want us only paying $19.99 for data forever!

    4. serpentor Says:

they can’t kick us off the old plan, but for new users they are not charging $45/month for sk add on.

I think that about kills it right there. As much as I love the kick, it’s not worth $45/month

    5. DisKO Says:

Very sad… tho it seemed like that was the goal back in October…

if they do phase out sidekicks, how long do you think the Sidekick service will remain on? I wonder how long we could still use the devices we already have . .

Well, at least for another 2 years, since people will be on contract for that long

ah ok, that’s very true, at least probably for 2 years after they stop selling ‘em. even after that, I don’t see how they could just turn the service off on us. I suppose our devices will become outdated, but to me they’ll still be the ultimate massaging phone. too bad if they’re discountinued, it will be the end of a cool thing.

    10. haha Says:

Good riddance. Sidekicks are outdated and suck.

Sidekick are the best messaging phone if the mytouch have im,in as the sidekick nd he same keyboard it’ll b good but nothin can b as good as it mfor mesagin

I posted this in a coment earlier

    13. Wicked1 Says:

Oh course they are. As soon as I heard about the MyTouch Slide, which is supposed to be coming out in May, I knew they were gonna stop selling the sidekick. Compared to phones now, sidekicks aren’t up to par with mobile technology. Sad, but true. I got rid of mine in October, afterf the server fiasco after almost 5 years of using sidekicks. And $45 for the sidekick plan? Haha, please. I’m only paying $35 now for unlimited data & texts. But if a good chunk of people are using and buying sidekicks, I don’t see why they would discontinue them. They are though, the sidekicks being dirt cheap now, let’s you know this. There is some new Danger device from Microsoft floating around though. Might be a Zune phone/Project Pink, there has been rumblings and the ‘from Danger” that has been seen on twitter posts lately, not “from Sidekick” like it says when u post from a sidekick. We’ll see.

    14. Craig Says:

Good riddance to bad rubbish! I jumped ship last June for an iPhone after only having the Sidekick LX 2009 for a month. I’ve had every Sidekick since the Color Sidekick up til the LX 2009 (except the ID and Slide.) The LX 2009 just failed to impress. I remember getting excited when I read that it was going to be based on NetBSD, thinking it’d help keep the Sidekick stable unlike the previous versions. Boy, was I wrong.

I remember having to reset my LX 2009 every time it lost signal in order to get it back which was a total pain in the *** in New York City since there’s usually no signal in the subways.

Good bye. I won’t miss you at all.

    15. Todd Hellskitchen Says:

I tweeted the other day that I went to buy a case for my LX 2009 and it was marked $25.99 and when the woman went to ring it, it was discounted to $9.99… I tweeted that it looked like an ominous sign for our beloved Sidekick…

OK… So how do I start backing up the Sidekick data to a format that I will be able to plug it all into Android easily?? (Or if Microsoft gets nasty and accidentally deletes it all again in a huff??)

Would be a great How-to post for Hiptop3.com… Hint Hint Hint… (PLEASE!)

    16. Wicked1 Says:

@Todd Just use the T Mobile backup to backup your contacts and pictures. Didn’t y’all get an update so u would be able to use T Mobile’s Backup app? And u can save your contacts to your SIM, but when I got my Cliq I didn’t have to import my contacts from my SIM, all my numbers were automatically on it. Then you can forward your saved emails to a web-based email, go on Desktop Interface and copy-paste your notes to a Word doc. Don’t think there’s any way to backup the calendar though. It’ll be an easy transition, once u get used to Android and use to not having shoulder buttons. Then you will realize all that you have been missing with having the closed, restricted sidekick.

Sorry, I loved you, sidekick, but I’ve moved on & I’m happy with it.

    17. sam peterson Says:

I am 110% Positive on this as being a fact!

If T-Mobile drops the sidekick line. I am for a fact going 2 drop my tmobile service and go get a brick fone.

That is there signature device, which I am posting this from right now and I am most def not going 2 support tmobile at all if they do not support there fone that is there best device 4 messaging.

I am do sooo much more off my sidekick in 10 seconds time than anyone else can do off any fone out there in 3 minutes flat! This is the fastest device out there with jump options that synch with any pc seamlesly. Dropping this fone would mark the doom of tmobile’s reputation and mark lack of loyalty.

If the fone is not at the standards they won’t it, then maybe they need a better design team on it 2 make it touch screen & what not. However the system that supports this fone wuld conflit with the concept of a touch screen. Touch Screen is 4 easy navigation which this sidekick already puts the nav on any device to shame!

So tmobile, you drop this fone, you drop a lot of clients! A LOT!

    18. Crazyforkicks... Not anymore Says:

I feel bad for you guys. Stop holding on to the kick. I was with the kick from day one , over 7 years. Last year I jumped ship and got the iPhone 3gs. I can’t believe how much threaded texting has made my life better. The most amazing thing I do with my iPhone ha using an app to turn my lights on and off in my house . And I control and view my video cameras in my house. I pay my bills with the iPhone, I read entire books with the kindle app. I have 8 taba in my Internet browser !!! Get with technology!! U are using a VHS while others are using blue Ray!!!

    19. DisKO Says:

@Wicked1 I swear you speak my mind all the time. Question for ya: I’m in love with my Cliq but miss my SK email & the ease of selecting text, copy, paste etc. From email to notes/ texts etc. Any app suggestions or is there a way to edit received email that idk about?

    20. DisKO Says:

@crazy…not — love the vhs/blueray analogy! So true! Ha!

    21. Wicked1 Says:

@DisKO Well in any writing space you can hold the shift (up arrow) and use the D-Pad to highlight what you want to copy like on the sidekick, and you push menu button + c to copy and menu button + v to paste or longpress/hold d-pad button until the menu pops up and select Paste/Copy. If you want to copy something from an email, open it, and pick that you want to forward it and then when it opens just scroll down and copy what you want to. To copy from a web page you have to hit menu then pick Select text, then drag your finger over what you want copied and it will auto save it and you can paste it where you want it. There is a text edit app, and AK Notepad is a good notepad app.

Did you just get yours? You just have to mess around with it and download all kinds of stuff to try it out. I’ve installed like 100+ apps already, some were kept some were not. Get Astro File Manager, get one of the task killers because a lot of processes start up without you needing them and take up CPU. I use Advanced Task Manager Free.

    22. Wicked1 Says:

Actually no, you hit reply in the email and then scroll down and select what you want to from the original email

    23. kyle Says:

i heard that strait from a tmobile sidekick department manager that they were planning on doing that truly unfortunate and to think that i was going to keep tmobile and the sidekikc i got the droid and verizons network is so much better i get service eeevveerryyy wear honestly its scary how bad tmobiles coverage is compared to them and the internet is so much faster and deff worth more that the sidekick

Yeah that is definitely not true for new customers.

Maybe for those still on the old plans but with EM+ I pay 60 bucks for 500 minutes (unlimited nights/weekends) + unlimited text and data. It’s like this for any smartphone (and yes by definition the Sidekick is a smartphone).

For most people that do the math for the long term the new plans are fine and actually save a decent amount of money (I only saved 10 bucks a month when I switched but I don’t talk that much). If anything I still saved 120 bucks a year.

    25. ICON Says:

First off, @crazy…not and DisKO, its Blu Ray, gentlemen. Not “blue ray”.

Secondly, @sam, the Sidekick sadly hasn’t been the “signature device” for T-Mobile for a while now. They made a HUGE push for the MyTouch as their device of choice. And while I don’t have the numbers, but really wish I did, I’m pretty sure the Microsoft debacle caused many people to leave the Sidekick. Plus with the saturation of the cellphone market of keyboard phones with larger-ish screens, and the Sidekicks lack of features, it was too far behind the times to make any kinda comeback. Sure, the Sidekick has the best messaging clients, and the best keyboard, but it just doesn’t cut it in all the other areas. Browser isn’t great, YouTube is total garbage

    26. ICON Says:

Also, having WiFi is awesome, and I don’t know about the Cliq, but The DROID has shortcuts (aka “jumps”). If you hold “search” (aka the magnifying glass) and “B”, you jump tp the browser, and have the option to assign whatever you’d like to whatever function/app like you could with the Sidekick.

I too loved the Sidekick, having used it for 6 yrs, but its over.

RIP Sidekick devices. Thanks for everything.

    27. intoxicatedmofo Says:

This is such a blow to the sidekick community. I was a sidekick user since the sidekick 2 and I left the sidekick community after the sidekick lx, the concept described above is soo true sidekicks are just outdated, they always was. The real end to the sidekick era happened back when microsoft purchased danger, since then its been nothing but a downhill. The sidekick brand has made. Huge profits from out dated technology cell phones for many years but as we all know all good things must come to an end. I jumped ship back last year to a blackberry tour and honestly I cannot believe how outdated and limited the sidekicks really are. Let this be a lession to cell phone manufactures that even popular brands that sell outdated technology phones can still fall hard. And that’s exactly what the sidekick brand has done it has fallen really hard

    28. Growing Up Says:

It’s hilarious that at the top of this page there’s an for the Nexus One.

When I got the ginormous Sidekick II as a high school graduation present to myself, I was the man.

I now have the Sidekick 2008 the first day it came out, and I was already behind everyone else. I didn’t (and obviously still don’t) have 3G. I can’t get on Youtube…and yeah, that outage dealio SUCKED!

I’m waiting for my upgrade in April, and I know that T-Mobile is coming out with a bunch of sick phones. The Sidekick will always be close to my heart (I still have the SKII at home, it’s a very stylish paperweight), but it’s just time for me to grow up and get with the newer programs.

      It’s been fun, Sidekick.

I should of said, the data only plans are $45 for data +300 txt, $55 for data and unlimited txt.

Im dont think im the only one that doesn’t have a voice plan along with my kick.

But 45/55 is kinda crazy considering that smartphone data only plans are just $40.

    34. BaddAss MisterJ Says:

I’m on Sidekick 3. I went from the 1st color Sidekick to 3. I was not impressed w/ the others that came out after 3. When I-phone came out, I was just waiting for Sidekick to come up to par w/ them w/ at least a touch screen to go along w/ the 3G but they didn’t. When Microsoft bought Danger, I had such high hopes that it may come into realization, but no.

If the Sidekick is discontinued, I will discontinue my service w/ T-Mobile because I will lose all my aps I paid for to enjoy my sidekick. I will join the modern world and eventually get the I-phone for I can do more things and eventually get a Sling Box to watch things on the go.

I don’t know how T-Mobile & Microsoft is gonna make this right for all of us loyal sidekick users. . . But maybe it is time to move on!

    35. Wicked1 Says:

if you are gonna leave the sidekick, don’t automatically jump to an iPhone, like sheep. Look around, consider everything like plan prices, coverage, 3G coverage, and customer service.

    36. SKdude10 Says:

Actually, just get an iPhone. It’s the best phone out.

    37. serpentor Says:

For everyone wishing sidekick was touchscreen, I have to say touch is not the holy grail of user interfaces. Everytime I use my ipod touch I wish there were navigation buttons like on my sidekick.

Example: Scrolling down a long list or webpage takes like 20 flicks on the touch. on the kick its a 2 button combo. Another example: you would lose a lot of the screen real estate on a touch interface because everything needs to be blown up (enlarged) for fingers to navigate. Just compare how many lines you can fit on screen for an email on the touch ( and with the soft keyboard onscreen you can see like 2 lines of text) compared to the kick.

Just sayin that touch is not the thing or even the most important thing to making a next gen kick.

    38. Droid Does Says:

      Dear Sheep,

I strongly suggest checking out the DROID.

Sure, the keyboard isn’t great, but at least it has a keyboard! And a bigger screen than the iPhone. And multi-tasking with jailbreaking (see: voiding your warrantee). And short cuts, like the Sidekick!

      Oh, and free apps!
