Happy 5th Birthday Hiptop!

Monday, October 1st, 2007

Today we’re celebrating the 5th anniversary of the T-Mobile Sidekick. The original Black and White Sidekick went on sale today in Palo Alto California.

Reading the original review of the device from SfGate.com written by Henry Norr, he hit the nail on the head.

“I believe the Sidekick, despite some significant shortcomings, is destined to be a genuine mass-market hit.”

Sidekick LX: Blue or Brown?

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

Sidekick LX BrownSidekick LX BlueSidekick LX Street Date
Confirmed by T-Mobile’s Best Buy’s computers and a rebellious employee, the guys at Danger/T-Mobile are apparently taking after Microsoft and are offering the Sidekick LX in colors that remind us of the Zune. Yes, the Sidekick LX will be available not only in the blue/black color that we’ve already seen, but will also come in brown. (No word on a white one yet) As far as what shade of brown, we haven’t heard yet. A T-Mobile rep contacted us and let us know it is listed as Espresso Brown. Wouldn’t this color have been more appropriate for the SKiD guys?

One surprising thing to note from the pictures is that T-Mobile’s system says there’s a street date of 10-21-2007. One can guess that this means that T-Mobile stores will have the device on the 21st. So bribery and sweet-talking an employee just might get you a sneak peak.

Oh, and one more thing. There will be LEDs around the body of the device that flash with alerts.

MySpace App hits the catalog

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

MySpace on the Sidekick

T-Mobile is finally pushing the MySpace app out to users. So far it looks like it’s free and only available to Sidekick iD users. The Sidekick Slide and the Sidekick LX will have the application pre-installed. MySpace is the #1 web page for Sidekick users, so it’s no surprise that they developed an app, probably to help cut down on their bandwidth costs! Here’s a list of the features:

Push messages and notifications – New messages or notifications from MySpace are “pushed” to the device like your @tmail.com email. Instant notification when that spam account wants to add you as a friend.

Persistent login – Using the application keeps you logged in all the time so you don’t have to keep re-entering your login and password.

Profile editing – You can edit your profile through the browser.

Faster content loading – Danger is optimizing the content on MySpace so it loads less data, resulting in quicker load times.

Optimized organization – Tabs are used for quicker access to different sections of MySpace.

Quick view of new account activity – Easily check all new account activity from the Jump screen.

Upload and Download Photos – Upload photos taken with your Sidekick camera directly to MySpace through the application.

Personalized Signature – Tack on a customized signature to your messages to let them know you’re using a Sidekick.

FCC Docs for the Sidekick Zante / Slide

Danger Zante
Sidekick Slide

FCC Docs for the Sidekick Slide have finally hit the FCC site today (FCC ID: IHDT56HE1). What’s surprising though is that the user manual has been posted as well as external and internal photos of the device. Normally a confidentiality request is submitted to hold this info under wraps until close to release date. It looks like Motorola skipped on this part, so it means the device is coming out soon. This also means that the device will be released in the states, most likely on October 16th at that T-Mobile Release Party. For those interested in the FCC docs, we’ve mirrored copies here so you don’t have to trudge through the FCC site. They’re all in PDF format though.
