Sidekick 4G In The Wild! Pics!
The moment so many loyal Sidekick fans have been waiting for… meet the Sidekick 4G!
It’s not the sexiest phone I’ve seen, but the physical layout of the 5 row keyboard gives me great hope for this new device. It’s very similar to the layout of the Sidekick LX 2009 keyboard, however most of the alt keys have been moved around which I’m sure will annoy some long time users to death. The Sidekick keyboard has remained virtually identical since the Sidekick II, why mess with it? Also the side buttons appear to be rearranged too, with the Menu button on the upper right and the Jump Menu button on the top left now re-branded as “Home” since it will be running Android.
Other things we can glean from these photos: we’re getting a camera (no big surprise), the trackball still exists, there’s a new Sidekick logo icon on the top right of the screen, we’ve lost the Call/End buttons, there’s a headphone port on the bottom left, much like the SK LX 09, we’ve lost the directional pad (another staple since the beginning), etc.
But the big thing that I know is going to upset people: it slides, not swivels.

UPDATE: Another pic showing that the Sidekick 4G is running Android 2.2.1

This is just a prototype, you guys.
And yes, the swivel screen is a patent. However, I do not know if it was T-Mobile or Danger who owns the patent.

This phone is ugly and isnt a sidekick/hiptop Tmobile/Microsoft just slapped the name on a android phone and called it a day. I dont even have Tmobile anymore but I use to be a huge sidekick fan and I would not buy this.

“…..[snip]…. And TMOBILE STOP LYING about this 4G **** (G2, myTouch 4g)… those are not 4G phones… they are just compatible for 4g connection speeds (the EVO and iPhone4 are REAL 4g phones)….”
Get your “facts” straight genius. Yes the EVO is 4G, the craptastic iPhone”4? is NOT, never was, never will be, and even with all the lies they spue advertising it Apple has never claimed it is a 4G device. Just because it has the number “4? in the name doesn’t make it a 4G device anymore than the Sidekick 3 was a 3G device. STUPID! And I don’t know about the Verizon version, it’s not out yet, but on AT&T’s TERRIABLE network the iPhone4 doesn’t even run 4G connectivy speeds (that’s when you can even get a non-dropped connection). The iPhone4 was an unneeded, hardly-an-”upgrade”-from-the-iPhone3 rushed-to-the-buy-anything-iPhone-idiots rip-off device. Slashdot reports that 89% of their touchscreens break within 1 lousy year! And 4G? It was never designed to run 4G anymore than a Sidlekick LX was, that’s impossiable, so why don’t YOU stop lieing about 4G and the odious iPhone”4?!
[& StormLIAR last said…]
F*CK AT&T!!! I was referring to the iPhone4 on Verizon’s LTE 4G network. My mom has that phone and its FAST & 4g, B*TCH… trust me I know!!!
[Setnakt now]
I don’t trust you LIAR. You are a LIEING LIAR B*TCH, so’s your mom. Last time I was over screwing her she didn’t have any Verizon iPhone4 NO ONE DOES LIAR! it doesn’t even come out tell February 10th, this is February 2nd genius, and there are NO early releases on the Verizon iPhone 4, so that’s how we all can know you are LIEING. Show us some credable article that proves the impossiable, that that iPhone4 on Verizon is 4G LIAR! Don’t hold your breath everyone. He CAN’T. But I CAN prove it’s not!
https://www.engadget.com/apple/verizon-iphone/
“… Just to clarify and put any wild rumors to bed, the phone is Verizon 3G (EV-DO) only, no 4G data or GSM roaming. It’s not a world phone or an AT&T + Verizon phone, it’s just a Verizon phone. Outside of Verizon connectivity, the phone is basically unchanged, although Verizon’s CDMA network doesn’t support simultaneous voice and data as with the GSM version…”
There, are we done now boy?!? No one who isn’t a total moron will believe your LIES now LIAR. You are DONE!
February 2nd, 2011 at 5:42 am
The iPhone 4 is not even released yet, so stop lying. I would know, because my mother tried to pre-order, and they told her that she wouldn’t be able to pre-order until February 3rd.
Also: THE IPHONE 4 IS NOT 4G. It doesn’t have LTE. Engadget posted an article about how Apple have a job listing for someone who specializes in LTE, which could be the iPhone 4GS or iPhone 5 will have LTE speeds.
https://www.engadget.com/2011/01/31/apple-job-posting-calls-for-another-lte-expert/
StormCity, you fail for lying, aha.
Also: Why would you even want an iPhone 4? Video chatting over wifi, with a CRAPPY as hell front facing camera, which is just something you could do with a laptop that has a much better camera? Pointlesssss.
February 2nd, 2011 at 9:39 pm
Ooops, that message was supposed to say *not even released on Verizon yet.

That sidekick looks dumb and I hate that samsung is making it. Not worth me giving up my G2 for and go back. Sorry. Besides, what are they going to do about the tmail email service that was issued to sidekick users? And also not defending anyone here on the thread but I had my G2 weeks before it was released at retail and I know a few folks who work at the apple store and they already have the VZW Iphone. So it is possible to have it before it is released if u have the connection

Enjoy =)

The iPhone 4 still isn’t 4G though.
i like how you mentioned the little changes they made to the Verizon iPhone but the iPhone you have doesn’t look like it has any of those changes on it.
February 3rd, 2011 at 9:21 pm
Wow, where to begin? Well I guess at the bottom of the barrel….
@Stormcity, tried your YouTube link and got the following: “This video is no longer available because the YouTube account associated with this video has been terminated.” Curious to say the least! But I guess not really as I’m betting it wasn’t an actual VERIZON iPhone4 but rather a AT&T iPhone4 you were trying to pass of as being a Verizon one, RIGHT?! That’s based on what EX-sklx-09 said, so I’m guessing you pulled the video before it was viewed and debunked by more people (like myself). And as EX-sklx-09 said (and everyone else in the business), it’s still not a 4G phone. So ROTFLMFAO HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA at you LIAR!! Typical little coward can’t even admit you lied when your caught. You have no honor or credablity~and yes who the hell with a brain wouldn’t hate that and with good reason (DUH)! No I don’t hate LAIRS who try to trick/play me~NOT! Most of us don’t have GIMP as a last name, so a big FAIL for you! Grow a pair and get a better game, loser.
@EX-sklx-09 Did he even show an unboxing of that iPhone4 that would show it branded as a Verizon iPhone? I’m betting StormLIAR’s now pulled video didn’t!
@Anthony Agreed on all! We both got info from engadget proving StormIdiot is full of it, I’m sure a lot of us can find lots more (I only looked 2-3 minutes via Google), and in just days the REAL Verizon iPhone4 will be out, and no amount of lies will hide the truth then…
Give up StormJackass, you are exposed as a fake & fraud. Go home & play on your PSP in your momma’s basement you FAKE!
February 4th, 2011 at 10:35 am
no unboxing, just him showing off an iphone 4, it said verizon 3g at the antenna and in the system info and he called verizon customer service, then plugged some pyramid scheme website to win free crap.
there apparently were other videos on the account about jailbreaking iphones/ipods.
but like i said, there were none of the changes to the iPhone that every other verizon iphone has had since release and it isn’t hard to make pretty much any smartphone’s info screen say anything you want it to, or save a number under a contact named *611.

Okay…well this is not a sidekick! What made the sidekick a sidekick is the amazing form factor i.e. mainly the swivel screen. The Danger OS wasn’t to bad;the OS did make jumping from app to app a smooth breeze. I throughly enjoyed that astranged looks I got from other people when I swiveled the screen to operate the device….they were probably thinking “how the hell did he open it?” However the last few Sidekicks (08′, 09′, etc.), in my opinion, were not worth the upgrade so I purchased a G1 and now am using the moto cliq xt…(random FYI dont but the XT its lame) I rather do enjoy the Android OS and was very optimistic about a Sidekick running on it. However, without the swivel sreen its not a true sidekick! HOPEFULLY this is just a prototype or some lame a** joke that someone is pulling to see if he/she can make a huge uproar. If it is just a prototype, I’m hoping that the makers of the future Sidekick phone will see this site and realize how important the swivel screen is to the devout sidekick consumer! I will remain hopefull until I actually see a solid device in the T-Mobile store.
February 5th, 2011 at 1:34 pm
Ive beeen waiting for this to happen for the longest, True Sidekick Fan!!! Its obviosly just a prototype and was leaked to get the word SIDEKICK in evryones mouths from the dead. from waht i can tell that noone in the comments really touched is that the buttons changed and there is no call endeding and stuff like that, sooo we got touch screen CHECK, Camera facing front so we will have Facetime talking CHECK, obviously android so there will be free apps and a Market place CHECK, it may just be me but how can you tell from the pics weather it swivels or not???? im mean its only in the open position or the closed so dont get your panties in abunch guys. Like someone said before there is usually a betterr on to come out anyway so be patient guys this is the begining of the new era, just dont be so quick to by this cause guaranteed, a month after this comes out, we will be here talking about the next sidekick……………
February 5th, 2011 at 1:59 pm
You can tell it doesn’t swivel because you can see the hinge and when the screen is opened, you can see that the icons and camera/sensors on the sides of the screen are in the same positons.
And there was mention of the changed buttons, there’s not much to discuss any further about them, they are clearly different.
February 5th, 2011 at 5:13 pm
It doesnt look that bad, but does it have wi-fi? is it touch screen? I’ll miss the old OS but Android rocks! When is it coming out?
February 5th, 2011 at 6:55 pm
@EX-sklx-09 Thanks for the feedback on what was pretty clearly a fake Verizon iPhone4 scam. I figured as much. Now maybe we can get the thread back on track.
As for that track and this new Sidekick, as many have said here I’m hoping this is a prototype not the final product. The shown phone is clearly a slider not swivel screen. I had heard that Danger (now owned by Microsoft) had that trademarked, so that’s likely gone for good. I’m not really married to the swivel screen IF the slide isn’t prone to brakeage (or worse). Android is good, I don’t care if it has a touchscreen as long as it has a full keyboard. If I wanted a touchscreen there are plenty of phones like that, I don’t know why so many people are addicted to that “feature”. Kinda concerned about the lack of a directional pad. The trackball on my SK LX 2007 basicly died just from normal use (a LOT of people reported this issue). And that was just after 3 months! No problems so far with the trackball on my year-old SK LZ 2009, but I learnt from the previous device to rely mostly on the directional pad so as to not “wear-out” the trackball. That won’t be possible if there is no directional pad, obviously. Not good, unless they made it work and to last this time (and especially not good if T-Mo refuses to recognize it as a “Known Issue” as they have in the past). I don’t care if it supports Wi-Fi, if it runs anywhere close to 4G why would anyone even want Wi-Fi when you have a dedicated network? That one I don’t get. I certainly hope it doesn’t rely on Wi-Fi for any critical opperations, that would cripple the device and be a real deal killer with me. I guess we will see where this goes…
February 6th, 2011 at 5:30 am
This shit gone be just like the kin…..FAIL
February 6th, 2011 at 4:59 pm
Aye I Dont Care I FUXXXX with sidekick im glad its coming out F all the haters
February 7th, 2011 at 7:49 am
I REALLY hope the keyboard doesn’t lag. I have had 3 Samsung phones so far and all the keyboards lagged a bit :/
February 8th, 2011 at 5:19 pm
It looks ok i got the motorola charm and im very happy with it. Love the key board i finally found a phone that ima keep for a very long time. But this sidekick has potential but i really don’t like the look of it or the key board.
February 10th, 2011 at 2:42 pm
Any new news on this phone? I havent heard much lately, but my birthday is in march and I’m hoping that its released by then so I can show it off. I actually have grown pretty fond of it, the look anyway 😀
February 12th, 2011 at 4:36 pm
Nothing new as of yet…maybe at the MWC there will be something out..
February 13th, 2011 at 5:57 am
Correct, there will be.
February 13th, 2011 at 8:13 am
The UGLIEST phone ever. I dropped my sk09 (because the internet just stopped working for it and tmo wouldn’t help..saying all sk were having the same problem) so I went to the bb 9700. I really wish they would just make it like other sks, then i’d switch back. I dropped my $20 data plan which blows so much =/
This isn’t a sidekick. it’s a stupid, cheap looking P.O.S
February 13th, 2011 at 8:03 pm
so.. a sidekick 4g is announced and will sometime be released for Tmobile. honestly i think T-mobile’s best bet is to leave the Sidekick deceased. Honestly how will this phone compete with the smart phones that are already out and those who will be coming later on this year? spec wise, the phone is already outdated compared to phones that are launching this year with duo core CPUs. Tmobile has pushed their Mytouch branded phones so much and now they are willing to try and recapture the audience that once praised the sidekick? This is a bad move on so many levels. perhaps the biggest reason is that the sidekick brand died in 2009, its been two years since their last device. along with the data outage caused by microsoft, it caused alot of people to leave the brand and find satisfaction in other branded phones. not only that but its built by Samsung which means no updates!!. The phone is also running android, which means its not a sidekick, its a knock off android phone being called the sidekick in an attempt to recapture the audience the brand once held for tmobile. Its not about wheither the screen slides or not, it was the OS that made the sidekick a SIDEKICk. Honestly i am interested in seeing how badly this will flop as soon as it launches..
February 13th, 2011 at 9:00 pm
we don’t even know what the final specs and details this will have yet, besides “4G” connectivity.
February 13th, 2011 at 9:28 pm
Wrong, it was the swivel screen. Sure the OS was a different contribution, but the screen was the main thing.
February 15th, 2011 at 7:16 pm
Ur a hater on so many levels dude. In all seriousness, why are you here?

WTF WHY DOESN’T IT HAVE A FLASH FOR THE CAMERA!!!? WTF!!!
March 15th, 2011 at 6:07 pm
honestly, i haven’t been on this website for soooooooo long since i got my blackberry but i decided to check up on it because i always loved my sidekick (i still get it from my drawer and just swivel the screen continuously.) then i saw this new sidekick, i got excited for a second thinking i might just leave my blackberry for this because they finally have a sidekick with a touchscreen and keyboard. but once i read that it slides instead of swiveling they crushed my fantasy once again. why do they always have to dissapoint me.
ALL I WANT IS AN UPDATED SIDEKICK LX WITH A TOUCHSCREEN! thats it. and what i mean by updated is for it to have new features that keep it up to date with the competition.
this one was almost perfect, but they’re not there yet.
