Sidekick 4G is Coming to T-Mobile!

This is one of those days where all you die-hard Sidekick hold outs can turn to your friends and say, “See I told you so.”
That’s right, the T-Mobile CEO, Philipp Humm, confirmed in a press presentation this morning that the Sidekick will continue!
“…and coming soon, will also be a Sidekick 4G. Everybody knows the Sidekick, and we’re going to relaunch the Sidekick and bring it as a 4G device, Android based, into the market”
As he said, the device will be Android based, and HSPA+ compatible. No word on the manufacturer, screen size, cpu, etc yet. Here’s hoping they figure out a way to combine the Sidekick’s historically awesome keyboard/form factor with the new hotness of the Android OS. The rumored launch date is sometime in Spring. We’ll let you know as we hear more.

It’s going to be a slider. π
January 20th, 2011 at 4:17 pm
I like sidekicks because they look different from any other phone.. everybody has a slider phone…V_V. They took all the individuality out of the sidekick ): UGH! I need to see more pics…
January 20th, 2011 at 4:58 pm
those aren’t the actual pictures!
January 20th, 2011 at 5:54 pm
the pic was just a placeholder illustration for the presentation today. looks like an older model slider with 3-row qwerty.
January 20th, 2011 at 7:28 pm
FINALLY the day of reckoning has come! we will have our device!!! can’t wait for the specs…where’s all the old heads at??returnn to us!!
January 20th, 2011 at 7:55 pm
I am so disappointedβ¦I love sidekicks and the swivel screens without it it’s not really a sidekickβ¦this is terrible
January 20th, 2011 at 8:26 pm
I’m currently using a T-Mobile G2; If the Sidekick comes back looking better than ever (excluding a slider) then I will gladly purchase a sidekick again. I really do miss using a Sidekick & swiveling the screen back and forth. Unfortunately, Danger was bought by Microsoft. I’m sure if Danger stayed in the market and advanced their tech, they would have made the Sidekick as competitive as an iPhone or Android.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been on this website; I had great times here (finding out answers to my problems, rumors about the Sidekick, and especially waiting for an OTA update) LOL remember those times? those were the best.
But yeah above all, hows everyone doing? Share your stories and tell us what phone you’ve moved on to. Hopefully the Sidekick rises again, better than ever before; Android is awesome! π
January 20th, 2011 at 8:47 pm
sidekick forever
January 20th, 2011 at 9:51 pm
i wanna see more!!!! but android is definitely a win
January 20th, 2011 at 9:51 pm
oo nd btw tmonews is way better than this site..jus sayin..
January 20th, 2011 at 9:53 pm
I literally switched over to the G2 from my Sidekick 08 after I had to, because my Sidekick wouldn’t charge. I hated to leave the Sidekick family, but I do like Android a lotttt. This would be the best of both worlds, though I am not sure if it would really be any more than a name, since Danger wouldn’t be involved. I don’t like this G2 keyboard anywhere near as much as I liked Sidekick keys, but it’s okay. So basically… I am interested in seeing this and would possibly consider a switch… it would have to be amazing enough for me to pay the non-contract price.
January 21st, 2011 at 5:49 am
Im currently using the sidekick 08 to leave this comment. I love the sidekick, I thought danger would make a big come back. Keep it in the sideick family ( swivel screen, nice keyboard, trackball.) And a mix of the OS’s. I was so happy when I got this phone, my friends still say you still have it!? Yeah, good memories…
January 21st, 2011 at 5:51 am
If its doesnt have a swivel screen, what the hell is the point of calling it a sidekick!?
Everybody loves the swivel screen!
January 21st, 2011 at 11:11 am
Some of you people don’t seem to know the difference between the name Sidekick and the DangerOS.
DangerOS has been owned by Microsoft for several years now. It will never be further developed. It’s more or less dead. MSFT basically killed the DangerOS.
Sidekick is a trademark name that T-Mobile owns. They could release a banana and call it a Sidekick.
The new Sidekick will not run the DangerOS you’ve grown to (mostly) love. Don’t get too excited. They’re just calling the new device a Sidekick so that people like you get excited.
January 21st, 2011 at 1:21 pm
technically its the danger UI sk fans love, and since danger’s head is now at android, we should expect an awesome sk with an even better OS, hopefully designed by sharp once again
January 21st, 2011 at 1:34 pm
Yeah, there has always been things about Android to get excited by. But people already have the choice to get one of many ‘droid phones. The “Sidekick” seems like it will just be branding on a otherwise “regular” android phone.
January 21st, 2011 at 4:11 pm
Thumbs up to what SB said. You can already get android devices that have a keyboard. Maybe they’ll make this have a swivel keyboard, who knows. If that’s all you cared about as far as the sidekick goes then more power to ya. If you’re hoping for a completely redesigned UI on top of Android… Well you MIGHT get one but it wouldn’t be from google- and then you’ll be stuck with a non standard android UI which none of the many many third party android apps will make use of.
Now, I’m not saying this won’t be a decent phone, but if you haven’t found a good android phone you already like, then this probably won’t change your mind. For the rest of us, here’s to hoping that the Danger backend servers keep on running for as long as possible.
January 21st, 2011 at 5:08 pm
Wow, I caught this on engadget and came right here, I miss the sidekick so f’n much!! The flip of the screen, the ease of the keys, any sidekick b4 08 I love, like the original lx I still got m don’t user our but I love to look at it. The ui was a good one, simple and unique, I doubt we’ll see it again but something similar would be great, some sort of android danger love child! And f third party apps! Having the kick back wit the type and drive keyboard I’d love to modify the apps to match the os anyway!
I’ve moved on to the epic 4g and I love android, great phone great service and everything is better than tmo. I am sorry to say if I couldn’t do anything to get it behaving cdma, and believe me I tried hard at that with the lx, I could never go back to tmo, unless we had a strictly data relationship, preferably no strings attached.
LONG LIVE THE SIDEKICK!!! AS LONG AS IT’S IN IT’S ORIGINAL FORM!!!!!
January 22nd, 2011 at 3:06 am
Couldn’t give a shit about the OS, Its the sidekick form factor that “people like us” Love.
January 22nd, 2011 at 6:14 am
I hope that HTC is making this
January 22nd, 2011 at 10:58 am
still on the sk3g wtf. but if the upgrade online carries over the sidekick data plan at its grandfathered 19.99 im in…. =p
January 22nd, 2011 at 1:45 pm
I’m using the iPhone on tmobile… Edge network FTW! Super slow speeds still get the job done.
January 22nd, 2011 at 9:30 pm
Hey, how much you’ll sell that old sidekick for ???
January 22nd, 2011 at 10:55 pm
which you want boy na meen i got everything for cheap to jus reply boy na meen wat you need?”
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:50 pm
As soon as I saw android, I said its not a true sidekick then
January 23rd, 2011 at 9:31 am
it has got to have the same general hardware structure. The five row keypad is a must for me.
January 23rd, 2011 at 1:31 pm
ITS ABOUT FUCKIN’ TIME! and yes…
we told u so! Sidekick and Andy Rubin have re-married! YES!!!
January 23rd, 2011 at 2:15 pm
Its been a long time coming. They took a year off to HOPEFULLY get it right! I would just like it if they would make it with the 5 Row Keyboard, Swivel screen and custom unlimited plan…along top of a unique UI.
BUT, if Sharp makes it instead of HTC, there are many pro’s and cons to this:
Sharp!
Pros:
– Sharp makes BEAUTIFUL screen displays. The LX 09 was a prime example!
– They make all of the buttons in the correct places and they are responsible for the AWESOME, AWESOME keyboard!
-The swivel screen is also their fault, although it needs to be more sturdy this go around IF they are cast to manufacter this phone
Cons:
-A BIG one wit Sharp is that the screens are always going black, or the swivel isnt strudy, as mentioned above. They always tended to go blank…and we ALL know about the imfamous “AL WHITE SCREEN” fiasco
-CHARGER PORT!…any sidekick user know what i mean.
-BATTERY LIFE….’nuff said!
HTC!
Pros:
-They make GORGEOUS devices!
-Very reliable device!
-HUGE SCREENS!!
-I could go on, but they aren’t perfect
feel free to help me out
Cons!
As far as the sidekick goes, (and this may be my BIGGEST concern with HTC making this phone) A LOT of HTC’s devices just look TOO SIMILAR! The G2 was a letdown for me in terms of the look and feel (keyboard was kinda ghey. I don’t want this phone to look too much like the other phones they make. SWIVEL SCREEN, 5 ROW KEYBOARD, ATLEAST 3.8 INCH SCREEN (cuz the MyTouch 4G aint half bad π ) , and a TRACKNAV…
and its all good on my side.
With the Sidekick returning, hopefully people will realize how unique this monster of a phone was…and again, will be π
DAMMIT, I need a job, cuz once i find out what this thing looks like, and its anything like what we’re sitting here wishing for, thats what my first paycheck will be on! π
January 23rd, 2011 at 6:58 pm
na meen it gotta b htc na meen you kno boy good and all na meen boy?!
January 24th, 2011 at 1:30 pm
Lol ummm yea sure…whatever floats ur boat….
….. na mean ? o_O
January 24th, 2011 at 1:34 pm
I’m still heere bruh….its crazy how only a handful of ppl actually kept praying.
I’m glad we’re finally gonna get the device we deserve! But if its made by Motorola (HEAVEN FORBID!) then I hope they don’t make ANYTHING like the Backflip…or a slide up screen like the Sidekick Slide. I just didnt like those π
January 24th, 2011 at 3:55 pm
I actually liked the slide, it was very sturdy and the keyboard was just as good.
Only thing was the battery contact thing, which you could’ve fixed easily enough.
January 25th, 2011 at 12:11 pm
it obviously wont be Danger involved,as long as it resembles a sidekick im good
January 25th, 2011 at 4:11 pm
EXACTLY what I’m saying. If the screen swings out, nd the keyboard is as good as the Sidekick 3, then bring it on! Cuz no matter what ppl say, Android is actually pretty great π
January 25th, 2011 at 8:37 pm
im say 2 na meen with the swivel and the na meen nd g2 keyboard nameen nice boy
January 26th, 2011 at 11:04 am
How about AIM?
i remember Sidekicks having the best aim because it was instant no matter what you where doing.
Why other phone cant have this “old” technology?
January 26th, 2011 at 12:12 pm
I see you Ace!
Ezra, i doubt it will have aim or anything like that built in for the fact that it’s andriod and you can dl anything you want…im wondering how the UI will turn out..i wonder what happend to magnus and alessa…left a lil too early…hmm
January 26th, 2011 at 1:19 pm
Thanks, yea ive had android devices and now an iPhone. But im just wondering why Danger was able to perfect aim and we cant. ive had the SK since it was black and white and it always worked perfect (always there like text messeging)
January 26th, 2011 at 2:02 pm
Loso, its bout time shit starts pickin’ up bruh. I really just wanna know 2 things tho, which is also what most people want to know also:
How will the UI look as a Sidekick with android, and what will the device look like overall. No 5 row swivel screen layout, no go for me. MAYBE I’ll try it, and Android is actually good, but if it doesnt feel like a general Sidekick AT ALL (Denger owns the Sidekick layout, with their jump, menu back and cancel keys, BUT NOT the screen. Other phones have had it too, just not as iconically advertized as the SK) then I may just grab a Motorola device with motoblur. Quite frankly, theyre the only phones in my opinion that are socially comparable to the Sidekick.
P.S. I still think Sidekick Twist will make it as the final product name
January 26th, 2011 at 3:03 pm
Has anyone seen the FCC filing on the new Sidekick yet. That would make it legit truth that one is coming out.
I was one of the many that jumped ship and got myself the G2 because my LX09 battery was not holding as long as it used to and would drain in like 3hrs. =(
January 26th, 2011 at 6:53 pm
Post the link. I’d love to see the filing. Thats another thing people will surely stick around for, Sidekick fans would definitely like that
January 27th, 2011 at 9:30 am
Stupid he’s askin if anyone has seen one retard
January 27th, 2011 at 10:27 am
Hopefully it looks like the Sidekick 2009 LX i loved that look and just make it with a bigger screen and like a 5-8 mp cam a ffc and atleast next 1 gig processor and atleast 4 gigs of built in memory and ill be sold i loved the sidekick brand
January 27th, 2011 at 11:57 am
Hey dickhole, I DIDNT KNOW THAT! BUT I HAD THE WORST NEWS COME IN.
Apparently its gonna be manufactured by one of these 3:
-HTC
-Motorola
-Samsung
Pick the odd ball out……
SAMSUNG! WTF?!?!
THEY BETTER GET THIS SHIT RIGHT!!
Heres the link:https://www.tmonews.com/2011/01/the-sidekick-4g-will-be-manufactured-by-samsung/
Yup, its official guys. Take it how u want, but I REALLY woulda preferred HTC. Even Moto, but Samsung better do EXACTLY what we want to this phone: 4 inch, FFC, 5 Row Keyboard nd great ass UI.
On the upside, we know for damn sure we’ll have a great ass screen. Super AMOLED belongs to Samsung, so thats DEFINITELY a plus π
Again, idk about samsung tho π
