T-Mobile To Give Out $100 To Eligible Customers
T-Mobile released their Monday statement. The short of it? If you lost your data, you’re getting $100. The long of it? Read below:
Updated: 10/12/2009 5:15 PM PDT
T-MOBILE STATUS UPDATE ON SIDEKICK DATA DISRUPTION, MON., OCT. 12Dear valued T-Mobile Sidekick customers:
We are thankful for your continued patience as Microsoft/Danger continues to work on preserving platform stability and restoring all services for our Sidekick customers. We have made significant progress this past weekend, restoring services to virtually every customer. Microsoft/Danger has teams of experts in place who are working around-the-clock to ensure this stability is maintained.
Regarding those of you who have lost personal content, T-Mobile and Microsoft/Danger continue to do all we can to recover and return any lost information. Recent efforts indicate the prospects of recovering some lost content may now be possible. We will continue to keep you updated on this front; we know how important this is to you.
In the event certain customers have experienced a significant and permanent loss of personal content, T-Mobile will be sending these customers a $100 customer appreciation card. This will be in addition to the free month of data service that already went to Sidekick data customers. This card can be used towards T-Mobile products and services, or a customer’s T-Mobile bill. For those who fall into this category, details will be sent out in the next 14 days – there is no action needed on the part of these customers. We however remain hopeful that for the majority of our customers, personal content can be recovered.
The interesting point is that T-Mobile knows who to send these $100 customer appreciation cards to. That means they know who lost data, which means they know what data was lost on the server. So the hope is that they were able to recover some user’s data and it wasn’t totally lost.

I’m hoping since i haven’t received this message my stuff’s safe? =P I’m glad i used the sync a week or two before the epic failure to “backup” most of my data to my email. But what about all of the emails i’ve got saved since 2003 when they first came out?! =( There’s never been an option to download your emails off, there was a 3rd party program polar ice or polar bear or something but it wasn’t 100%, lost header information etc, but that was still YEARS ago. =( And i know i’m not alone, there’s also some folks with photos on their device album, luckily i gave up on storing my photos up there as well a while ago. The next step is i just don’t even know what other good phones are out there since this has been the best phone by far ever. Would the MyTouch or G1 etc even be as good? I REALLY liked the online always nature of this but yes, not having an ability to backup ended up biting us all in the END… =/

I still haven’t gotten any of my data back. I’d rather have my data than $100. I’ve had almost every sidekick they’ve released so my information that was saved on my phone equaled out to about 6 years of my life. All of it gone. $100 doesn’t compensate. I’ll keep waiting for the data to return but I wont get my hopes up.
October 12th, 2009 at 6:41 pm [ Quote ]
Now that I think about it. I wouldn’t be surprised if only Sidekick LX 2009 users were the only ones to lose data. Being that Microsoft had something to do with making the device and all of its glitches because they don’t know what they are doing, I’d bet that the LX 09 users are the biggest group with permanent loss of data.
October 12th, 2009 at 6:53 pm [ Quote ]
what about prepaid customers whata bout them?
October 12th, 2009 at 6:59 pm [ Quote ]
This is **** why would I want to spend $100 with a company that failed me. I think there should be options. free phone upgrade, be let out of contract or better yet instead of free month of data why dont they throw in a couple of months with your plan price as well.
October 12th, 2009 at 7:00 pm [ Quote ]
Wait… the other Sidekickers lost their data too?! I thought it was just the LX 09! Whoa. T-Mobile is going to be pissed with all the $100 it has to give out… What I want back are my contacts and notes ;(
October 12th, 2009 at 7:13 pm [ Quote ]
Only 100?! What a slap to the face.
October 12th, 2009 at 7:22 pm [ Quote ]
Okay, I am a prepaid T-Mobile customer. I strictly buy the data plan. I have been on the sidekick prepaid data plan for 6 years. My entire life could be explained through my contact book and notes. I just need to know Ill be included in the kickback from T-Mobile. As I have been dedicated to them for so long. I just want my free month and my hundie if my data dont return. Oh T-Mo please let me know you got my back
Sidekick ID: MrAlan
Model: LX09

I just called again and yes the customer service guy said they can tell who has and hasn’t received their personal data, so I guess the Danger peeps are trying to see if the lost data can be recovered, then you get the $100 buck card. But we will have to wait 14 days from today, until that happens, they are making sure that the data is really gone before they shell out all this money. Now, it may be a plus that my nephew knocked my phone on the floor, knocking the battery out, and losing all my data except for my most important numbers that I saved on SIM. I’m up for an upgrade, I would only have to pay $167 for a MyTouch right now, if I wanted one, couple that with, hopefully, a $100 credit, I’ll probably be getting the Cliq for like $80, because I’m assuming that with my full upgrade discount status, its gonna cost no more than $200, and I can split it up into 4 payments. I would rather have a phone with a keyboard, that’s why I don’t want a MyTouch.
I’m really gonna be sad to leave the sidekick, its the only phone I’ve had on T Mobile, since 04, and the info back-up/Desktop Interface feature of the platform was and has been one of the greatest features, and one of the reasons I have stayed with the Sidekick this long, but now I simply don’t trust it anymore, this could happen again. I had emails, notes, etc. from as far back as 2005, that seemlessly transfered from the SK2 to the Sk3, to the LX, all gone now. And I was already %75 ready to move away from the Sidekick family before this happen, I refuse to keep paying raising prices for games, apps, and ringtones, because I still have the LX 07, on the sidekick, when I can be getting all that for free on a more advanced phone, like the MyTouch and G1. T Mobile doesn’t know how to keep people, they should have took a note from Apple in that Itunes and the App Store has a gang of free games and apps. When you give lots of free things customers are more likely to buy stuff. Years ago the Download Catalog used to have a free game and app hear and there, but that hasn’t happened for a while. The only free app in the catalog now is the Facebook app, and that was just added recently, and there are no free games or ringtones. I’m just thru with the sidekick, not T Mobile though, I will be staying with them just on a diff phone.
October 12th, 2009 at 7:26 pm [ Quote ]
they should do that to all that have sidekick phones give out that $100 even tho that’s not enough but atleast it’ll be fair n yea there should be options also
October 12th, 2009 at 7:31 pm [ Quote ]
Every1 should get that $100 not only specific sidekick customers that’s just a slap to the face cuz every sidekick user was effected
October 12th, 2009 at 7:39 pm [ Quote ]
okay, since I lost every single piece of data from pictures notes to-dos
CONTACTS and I read getting them back was not likely, I am seriously bummed and have started my address book again, its only 46 so far :/ but my concern is since I started entering new data will i void my eligibility towards the 100$ app. card?
October 12th, 2009 at 7:50 pm [ Quote ]
My phone has not had service [shut off] for the last month and I got it back on the other day. It will not let me sign into my danger account so therefore i have no data. What do I do?
October 12th, 2009 at 8:00 pm [ Quote ]
I supposedly received the f’n OTA update at 7pm today and it cause my phone to restart said the customer service rep and it caused me to lose all my data and I mean all of it. Thanks you ******** at Microsoft I’ll never buy any of your product again. T-mo needs to offer us a free upgrade equal to what we paid for our sidekicks or allow us to leave with no fee. I’m so bummed I dont even have my realtors phone number. Is anyone else having issues with get to the desktop interface on their pc?
October 12th, 2009 at 8:01 pm [ Quote ]
You just relax until its resolved and hope t-mo will give you a fair refund.
October 12th, 2009 at 8:02 pm [ Quote ]
I’m willing to argue T-Mobile doesn’t know JACK about who lost what, because I just got my email working again … and guess what? I have doubled-up on my NEW address book contacts, like they sent those again — yes, the NEW ones I’ve been trying to rebuild!
Who’s to say that they don’t THINK they’ve sent us our data back and have instead just bounced back the NEW data that was post-collapse, and are going to cheat us out of 100 bucks in the process?
They’ve already said they expect practically “everyone” to get data returned. Guess what that means? Yep! You won’t get that 100 bucks whether you lost data or got it back, because T-MOBILE will decide whether you lost your data or not, NOT you.
Every time they try to smooth things over, they’re just ticking me off more.
October 12th, 2009 at 8:13 pm [ Quote ]
So I dropped my phone yesterday and lost all my conacts. Any idea if people who lost the contacts recently can get them back? Perhaps they actually backed up the info they had? I’ve been so good not shutting it off and I’m ticked
October 12th, 2009 at 8:20 pm [ Quote ]
So today out of nowhere my phone turned off and gave me the face of death so I had to reboot it. And now I have no contacts. I had all my info until today. I wonder if I will get my stuff back….:/
October 12th, 2009 at 8:28 pm [ Quote ]
Im pretty sure they do know who’s not going to get there contacts back! Just like everyone doesn’t get the text messages tmo has sent out in the pass. Fact is if people get the $100 its still not enough for the people that lost their contacts period.
October 12th, 2009 at 8:36 pm [ Quote ]
Someone’s pointed out a good point here — this isn’t 100 bucks we’re getting, it’s 100 CREDITS we’re getting. Gift Cards! The only thing we can do with this is purchase MORE T-Mobile products/services, and hence T-Mobile isn’t taking a hit from this at all … in fact, if you’re going to take this 100 credits and apply it to a new smartphone, they’ll still make money off our suffering!
Why in God’s name would I want such catastrophically poor service to be “reimbursed” in “credits” that pay to the order of the catastrophically bad company I’ve wasted my entire day arguing with in customer service?
Sure, Microsoft is the cause of this, but T-Mobile needs to look out for that massive ONE THIRD of their user base here, and instead they’re worried about their bottom line and are producing inconsistent treatment between accounts!
I’ve been told the internet and hiptop3.com is full of liars by T-Mobile’s customer service reps, for saying people are getting upgrade eligibility on their devices! What do I have to do? Find someone who’s gotten this service and get their receipt!!?
October 12th, 2009 at 9:12 pm [ Quote ]
Im personally happy for the $100. Not sure what id spend it on w/Tmo tho. I personally wish it was for anything but at least its SOMETHING! Showing that they care in some shape or form.
For those of u wanting more money…$100 per sidekick user is prolly more than any of u can count. Just take it.
As for the data loss, Im slowly re-adding my contacts 1 by 1 and and trying to get over the lost notes and important calendar dates and deadlines I had stored. Just gotta do everything from scratch. Life still goes on…and the sidekick is still a pretty awesome device! So take the $100 and keep livin!
October 12th, 2009 at 9:25 pm [ Quote ]
Its just flat out unfair that many people are getting special favors added to their account while I, a loyal user, am trapped here with 11 months on my contract due to a previous screw-over.
I think people are getting pacifiers stuck in their mouths with this 100 dollar credit (which I still think less than 1% of you are going to see) — we’re letting them so easily weasel past this, when we can’t forget about the PRINCIPLE of what happened! The data was LOST. Gone, FOREVER.
Remember a day ago when they said “Everything is most certainly lost”, but now all of a sudden its “LOL. Oh look we found it!” Does this seem like a company that can tell its head from its ***? Is this a company you want to continue trusting your smartphone service to, 120 bucks (you may or may not see) or not? Hell no!
Don’t let them pacify you with empty promises! We’ve been screwed over and we’ve had our contracts breached, all 1 million of us, and we have every right to be and stay pissed off until we get some real options for compensation and service-switching!

October 12th, 2009 at 10:08 pm [ Quote ]
Went to a TMobile store today and the associate acted like she hadn’t heard of people having problems with their sidekicks. She was all “oh can I help troubleshoot with you? They’re working hard on restoring services!” **** off.
October 12th, 2009 at 10:15 pm [ Quote ]
I think it’s unfair as well, I think there have been enough people claiming that they got free phones, that I believe it. If you are a person who has multiple lines on your account, and/or is a business person, and threatening to take your business elsewhere, they probably are cutting all kinds of deals. You have to talk to the higher-ups though, not the low level customer care reps. The fact is, it will cost you $200 to terminate early, which is basically a phone. I thought the FCC passed a law to where they couldn’t charge those high termination fees, but maybe it hasn’t went into effect yet. I’m up for a full discount upgrade so the upgrade deals they are giving to some customers I would have been getting anyway. I’m not super mad a T Mo because they don’t run and maintain the servers that this fiasco is all about, so I’m not raging about switching companies-I have a good promo voice plan + $20 data plan, lifetime corporate discount in place, have loyalty standing, and can split up the payments for a new phone. Why would I switch companies? I have had no problem with T Mobile until now. I was planning on moving on from the sidekick anyway, this way I get $100 off, plus upgrade dis on my next phone. $35 for unlimited data and texts is still one of the best deals from the cell companies. I was able to save my most important numbers, texts, and emails, so I can kind of get over it and move on. I’ll just miss the phone.
I’m not gonna bash Microsoft either, the company is so big, has so many departments, I’m sure the top guy didn’t enact some wreck-sidekick operation, hahaha. I will continue viewing this site on my PC, I’ll be installing my Windows 7 upgrade on the 22nd, and I’ll be buying my zune HD next month. Be mature about it people, stop cursing Microsoft’s name. In Tech, electronics, there is always a chance something will crash, break, malfunction, or not back-up. It’s not the end of the world, deal with it and move on
October 12th, 2009 at 10:32 pm [ Quote ]
This is ridiculous! All I was able to get was just my myfavs and that’s it. I have yet to get my contacts. I got my emails, but my contacts are what’s important. 100 dollars or credits is not enough for my contacts that I’ve lost including all my dates on my calendar, my todo list and my notes. Come on T-mobile! We’ve all been patient and are loyal customers. We need more than just 100, it’s just a complete slap to all of our faces!
October 12th, 2009 at 10:42 pm [ Quote ]
Called 2day they lowered my monthy data plan to $19.99 formely $35… then they gave me the upgrade option to get any phone at new customer price, ima save it tho for the new motocliq…

BREAKING NEW:
T-MOBILE IS WAIVING ALL ETFs FOR SIDEKICK CUSTOMERS!!!
If you want to cancel your contract, tell them that you want to cancel, no if’s, ands, or buts. Stand your ground and they will waive the ETF! This is from an anoynomous source that works for T-Mobile.
October 12th, 2009 at 10:51 pm [ Quote ]
I’m not finished with them, tomorrow morning I’m calling loyalties and demanding I get upgrade eligability.
October 12th, 2009 at 10:53 pm [ Quote ]
So I just called to speak to a rep to see how one would know if they were going to receive the $100 and what to do if you are over looked. The rep I spoke to said you’ll be getting a letter in the next 2-3 weeks. I said what do I do if I don’t get a letter? She simply replied call back. I was kinda speechless. First the 2-3 weeks thing kinda threw me and then no way really tell if you’re eligible to get the credit. I still don’t know what to think. Has anyone else got similar info?
I’m ok as long as I get the $100 cause I had already been thinking of going to the BB world, this little fiasco just sealed my Sidekick’s fate. :\
October 12th, 2009 at 10:56 pm [ Quote ]
They will be posting information in the next 14 days about this 100 credit. If you don’t get notified, you should be recieving your info back.
October 12th, 2009 at 11:31 pm [ Quote ]
Hopefully you all wake up and buy a real device and stop living like you’re 16 yrs old with your sidekick and garbage t-mobile service.

Well, I’m all up for the $100. Especially since I’m upgrading in Decemeber.
Haven’t gotten any data back. Crossing my fingers that I don’t.
October 13th, 2009 at 12:13 am [ Quote ]
Man, I’ll take the #100, but I want my data to stay $20. I called twice today, and asked about that, in addition to other things, and they said they couldn’t do it. When I first called I asked to speak to a Account Specialist and I didn’t have a particular name and he ended up not transferring me. How do you talk to Loyalties? Just asked to be transferfed to loyalties?

As if punished by God, guess what’s happened to my Sidekick during the middle of the night while surfing the web? Trackball broke. Won’t scroll left now.
Its the same thing that happened to my original sidekick lx, except that was in the downward position.
If I don’t get upgrade eligibility, my head will explode.
October 13th, 2009 at 6:01 am [ Quote ]
Oh man people are FREAKING OUT!!! Relax buddy most likely your trackball is umm (let me keep this simple) DIRTY!?!? Not punished by god….jesus nuts… calm down people
In other news…
Why are people bashing tmobile
They are trying their best to resolve this issue they are!
Why dnt you put yourselves in their shoes for a second u have 1/3 of you customers calling all day (numerous times) to complain about something they already know is going on, employees that know nothing about your “doomed” lives and devices and you people call and curse them out making demands like a bunch of wild beast…
People, people, lets be civilized
If you want to really switch devices tmobile is letting you do just that hence upgrades and the $100 credit they’re giving out want to stay with your sidekick!? Then be patient they are working on this issue not their fault microsoft did what they did…see, you all call tmobile and complain to them…NONE OF U, NOT A SINGLE ONE, HAS CALLED MICROSOFT AND COMPLAIN TO THEM …………. how about that one?!? When are we gonna start that one!?
And that was my rant.. =]

BTW wonder if the admin has read anything on what they’ll do with prepaid customers?
Odvious they won’t be getting $100 … but anything at all?
Anywho anyone from RI selling a cheap LX 09? (^_^)
October 13th, 2009 at 7:54 am [ Quote ]
I had to buy a second Sidekick LX after the first one’s scroll ball broke and they refused to let me use the warranty under the premise of “water damage”, though it was never near water.
Random Sidekick track ball breaks are common. Do a Google search — its probably the second most common malfunction behind screen short circuits.
I’m in a much happier mood today, since I was able to call customer service and get patched through to the loyalty department, who’s extrememly nice and understanding representative fully understood my problem and attached to my account the ability to purchase the new Blackberry coming out in November at the new customer price, and keep grandfathered rates of the Blackberry Data plan (20 bucks), and a Blackberry text messaging plan (9 bucks).
I’m a very happy camper now, and feel I’ve been adequately compensated for all this. I’d like to stress to anyone and everyone who was like me and do not feel what’s happening is adequate compensation to call the loyalty department and express what you know other people have gotten and what you feel you ought to receive.
Being very nice, polite, and expressing how much of a loyal history you have with T-Mobile was my strategy, and it seemed very productive.
October 13th, 2009 at 8:56 am [ Quote ]
Can you explain the blackberry grandfather data plan more?
When I called they said that they could give me a $20 data plan but that I would have to buy texting in addition to that for another $20.
On my current sidekick I have the $20 data and text plan.
October 13th, 2009 at 9:03 am [ Quote ]
Dont forget most lawyers don’t get paid until you get paid. The few I have talked to have estimated a ruling of approximately 10grand+ a piece depending on the critical data you lost. Keep in mind these lawyers take a 20% cut of the winnings but are not paid until they win.
This is the route I and many other will be taking if equal compensation is not made available to loyal prepaid customers. We will be launching a full blown online community for those who wish to be involved in this lawsuit and public slaughter of tmobile. We have a phpbb community being developed now. Which will only be launched if prepaid customers do not receive equal compensation. We will also offer a free service that will help match you up with free lawyers.

She told me that the grandfathered Blackberry Data Plan is essentially the unlimited data plan for the Blackberry, but at its original rate. However, considering she mentioned both of us would be getting a text plan too, I assume texting isn’t covered by the Blackberry’s version of the data plan. I’m not sure why mine was only 9 and yours was 20, but she did mention she was giving me an “old” texting plan, so maybe that’s the difference.
The ability to get the upcoming Blackberry at the new customer price despite the 11 months left on my contract (on the eve of my Sidekick hardware breaking on top of this mess), was excellent enough for me.
Fluffed my tail indeed.
Its cool to see I’m not the only one going for Blackberry as opposed to G1 or MyTouch. Android may be fine, but neither of the current devices are sufficient to me. I want a business phone I can rely on.

Here is my compensation story.
It started out with the stupid gung-ho customer service reps thinking that they can take care of this problem for me (”I’m happy to offer you a $19.99 credit).
No, *****. $20 isn’t **** for me.
I get transferred to customer loyalty and I tell them that I don’t WANT to have to cancel my contract if there is anything they can possibly do.
I tell them that I would switch to the new blackberry next month.
Then he tells me that it’s $35 for my same features then I ask him how much to cancel my contract. I say that its unfair for me to have to pay EXTRA just to have a RELIABLE phone. So they knock the texting for the blackberry down $5 and then knock the myFaves price down $10 to counter the increase in data+texting for the blackberry.
Then I tell him that I don’t want to pay the rest of the installment payments for my LX09 because it’s reliable. I tell him that I will send the sidekick back when I get the blackberry and they can waive the rest of the payments. AND HE SAID OK.
It’s important for you to convey that you DON’T WANT YOUR UNRELIABLE SIDEKICK ANYMORE. Tell them that you want to SEND IT BACK. This really proves your point and it did wonders for me.
Also, make SURE they notate your account, get their name and Rep ID number so you are guaranteed what they promised you.

Sidekick is good … best around for user interface for sure, but they’re showing their age in how little they’ve advanced over the past few versions… and its important to note the creative minds behind it are gone.
I’m sure in the coming months a new, worthy successor to the Sidekick brand will rear its head, but until that time there’s not much reason to stick around on these things (especially considering mine’s broken, hehe)

This isn’t the death of T-mobile, but they sure are ******* us this time. i am prepaid.. explained my unique situation and explained how being a small business owner with 6 years of data lost on my sidekick is more stressful then a high school kid who lost data and just got on their plan.
The kind reps. kind supervisor finally offered $20, I said make it $30 and she agreed. She then tried and found out T-Mobile put a limit of $10 credits on the reps and supes. This is absolute bullshit. These idiots who are brand new on prepaid are getting $130 kickbacks when Iv been with them for 6 years, am a man with valued business contacts who needs to make the bills and I get to beg on the phone for 4 hours (over 3 days) and get $14?
******* Bullshit. T-Mo is asking for a lawyer *******. I dont care what your opinion is. When paying daily to have **** backed up you expect it backed the **** up.
$14?? Really..
Your sweet little supe. rep wanted to give me more but you limit her to $10 per night. You are awful. I know your going bankrupt off this.. but **** treat us right.. dont make us beat the money out of you in court.

So we lost all out contacts. Personaly I lost 350+. Well I was jsut on facebook through my SK and noticed you can view anyones number on there. I had a list of 250 friends with numbers on there. So if your trying to rebuild anytime soon resort to Facebook if you have a existing account. Its easy and fast with copy and paste on your sidekick.

Are these upgrade eligibility’s true? If so, I’m using that $100 credit and selling my sidekick lx 09 for 150 and buying myself a G1. We both win

The problem with changing phones (since im a prepaid customer) is the insane charges that they make, having to buy a $10 like everyday. It adds up. I like the sidekick prepaid plan because of the $1 a day for all these internet services but after this im kinda tired of the sidekick. Still no contacts, notes, access to the catalog, ringtones and all that. Plus my web guard decided to block facebook, and everytime I call i can never get a hold of them to take it off.
P.S- Has any one actually RECIEVED the $100 gift card?

What do you expect them to do, give you a $500 credit or something? $100 is highly sufficient. That’s a free months service! I have T-Mobile…and I have a sidekick, and I’m not upset that it happened. When your computer crashes, do you think Apple, Mac, or whoever is gonna send you a free $100?….yeah, not gonna happen.

I contacted them today via chast session. Instead of telling me if Id get the gift card, I got a whole half hour chat session of them beating around the bush, and having the supervisor contact me. Blah. Its obvious folks, your not getting the card. I am legible, my data was never restored, and Im not getting one. I doubt anyone is.
