Sidekick iD – USB or Not?

Friday, April 13th, 2007

UPDATE: Confirmed by John B, it does have a USB port and it’s covered up with a little bit of plastic that is easy to lose. Thanks John!

Sounds like some lines got crossed somewhere. Whether or not the Sidekick iD has a USB port is in debate. Check out the image from www.sidekick.com:
Sidekick iD With USB Port
and then check out the video from Crunchgear’s John Biggs:

Hmmmmmm….. maybe there are SKiD flaps?
Sidekick iD with flap?

Thanks to exiva at HiptopHunt for pointing this out

Danger Zante?

Monday, April 9th, 2007

What’s this? A new device? Aaron Landry uncovered some bits of information on Flickr that look like a new device (with camera) is in the works. If you look at the EXIF data it shows “Danger Zante”. Could this be the Sidekick X we’re hearing about? Click here to see what Aaron found. Last time we checked, there wasn’t a camera company named “Danger”.

UPDATE: Images have been pulled from Flickr. New device? new operating system build? a Sidekick iD with a camera attachment? who knows…

Sidekick 3 Video Themes

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

Our favorite Sidekick theme site has somehow uncovered a hidden feature on the Sidekick themes, video themes. They’ve posted a few video themes already. Basically they act like normal themes, changing backgrounds, bubbles, and icons, but instead of playing a sound when you flip open the screen, it plays a video in the background. There are only a couple up right now, but they’re very cool to see in action.
Hope you had a HAPPY APRIL FOOLS DAY!

Sidekick X RAZR

T-Mobile Sidekick X

We got the image above from someone who probably wants to remain anonymous. We’re told it’s a slide from a PowerPoint presentation given at the T-Mobile National Marketing Meeting last week in Twenty Nine Palms, CA. While it’s not as exciting as pictures of an actual device, it tells us a few things. The “Sidekick X RAZR Multimedia device” basically says it’s going to be made by Motorola, it’ll at least play music (possibly even video since they mention “multimedia” instead of “MP3”), and it will be a smaller form factor as is typical of the RAZR phones. Speculation past that at this point is probably just speculation. Whether or not this “Sidekick X RAZR” name will stick is yet to be seen as well, but chances are the “Sidekick” name is still going to be used since it mentions their “intentions with the Sidekick line”. What’s with the “4:49” in the middle? We’re assuming this was put up on a projector at the conference with a countdown timer to when the session was due to start, a common sight for anyone attending conferences. What’s with the blur? Out of courtesy, we covered up someone’s full name so they don’t catch any heat. Unfortunately no time line or expected drop date, so we expect it’s far in the future. As always, we’ll keep you updated on what we hear.

The Sidekick ID, the SKiD!

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

When it rains, it pours… We’ve gotten confirmation from several sources that the new Sidekick will be dubbed the Sidekick ID, or the SKiD for short. (Yes, we know, be glad we didn’t pick a different picture for this post) This is the PV-150 we’ve seen on the FCC site, and heard in passing the past few months. Consider it confirmed now though. The details? It’s going to be about $100 with a 2 year contract and $150 with a 1 year contract. No bluetooth, no camera, no miniSD, no MP3 player, etc. Basically it will be a phone, web browser, and AIM client, with the addition of MyFaves. Why would you buy this? It’s inexpensive, people that can’t have camera phones at work can take it to work, and it’ll probably end up being one of those “Free with activation” phones further down the road. Expect it to hit in the next month or two, leaked pictures before then.

UPDATE: Speaking of leaked pictures, CrunchGear already has one:

Rumor Roundup

Monday, March 19th, 2007

We’ve been hearing a couple rumors about an OTA for the Sidekick 3 coming soon. No definite dates, but then again it doesn’t really matter as we’ll go through the same old roll-out sequence of a few at a time. We’ve heard that maybe this OTA brings MyFaves support, but haven’t been able to confirm that. We heard that MyFaves support was coming out, but you would only get the update if you called and requested it. That’s highly unlikely, so don’t bother picking up the phone and bothering TMobile.

We also heard that the Sidekick 4 was coming out soon, but we know that’s bunk. The PV-150 is next on the list, sometime in the next two months or so. We know it’s not the “Sidekick 4” but it is another Sidekick model. We’ll get more details on it as soon as the FCC docs are released into the wild. From all we’ve heard it looks like this won’t be a device for the hardcore Sidekickers, but will be a highly affordable internet enabled phone for everyone else. Tmobile/Danger are skimping on the features in order to offer a low-cost phone with internet and AIM. If you debating on whether you should wait for the PV-150, don’t. Go ahead and get a Sidekick III, or settle in for the long wait for the Sidekick RAZR that may grace us who-knows-when.

Sidekick 3 Razr sighting?

Tuesday, March 13th, 2007

It’s 2007, 3 months away from June. If TMobile is on track with the (seemingly more and more confirmed) roadmap, then we wouldn’t be surprised to see a prototype Sidekick NG, aka Sidekick 3 RAZR, out in the field. “Moonrock” wrote us today to tell us that she may have seen one. She was on a ferry, coming into Seattle (near Bellevue, WA which is TMobile headquarters!) when she saw what she thought was a black Sidekick 3 at first. She writes “I saw two girls leaving the ferry, one had a sk3, the other looked like it was just a black sk3, then I was trying to get a better look cause I realized there ISNT a black sk3 and realized it was a sk looking device that was super small.” She says it was “black, small, looked like the drawing.” We asked her if she might have mistaken it for a Diane Von Furstenberg Limited Edition, and she said that it wasn’t, because “it was very small.” Unfortunately she didn’t get any pictures and didn’t bother the girl with the device for more details, but says she will keep an eye out for it. We’ll let you know if we hear anything else of course.

Who wants to go to a party?

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

It looks like all this D-Wade hype isn’t stopping any time soon. This just in from an anonymous source, there’s a launch party happening for the D-Wade Sidekick 3. The date, February 17th. The place, maybe someone with better eyes can find out from the pictures. The cool part? The invitation is a 6×8″ card with a basketball like texture.

The D-Wade Limited Edition Sidekick 3

We got a link from Jahmar to the images above. Looks like screenshots of a PDF. We’d love to get our hands on the PDF for further investigation, but this looks legit. The details? A white and gold Dwayne Wade Sidekick 3 with a special “realistic basketball-textured backing for added comfort and grip”. The number 3 is also highlighted in gold since that’s D-Wade’s number. Thanks to Rap-Up.com for the additional photo below, showing off the textured back:

The text:
Designed by D-Wade
NBA All-Star Dwayne Wade is connected to the number three in a variety of ways: the number on his jersey, his mind-bending three-point plays, and his three spectacular years in the NBA, so far. Now with the Dwayne Wade Sidekick by T-Mobile, he takes on another kind of three — the T-Mobile Sidekick 3.
T-Mobile has teamed up with the 2006 NBA Finals MVP to create a unique limited edition version of the T-Mobile Sidekick 3. the Dwayne Wade Sidekick by T-Mobile connects the personal style and grace of the NBA’s fastest rising star to T-Mobile’s star communication device.

Designed to Amaze
Wade, an avid user of Sidekick since 2004, was integrally involved in the design process from start to finish, drawing on numerous realms of personal inspiration. The sleek device emulates a luxurious look and feel inspired by high-end automobiles. The crisp white colo of Miami’s South Beach is contrasted with tan accents and bronze number keys. Wade’s signature “3” stands out as the only detail in gold, symbolizing the elegance of winning an NBA championship trophy — which Dwayne hopes to be the first of many. Last but not least, the Dwayne Wade Sidekick by T-Mobile debuts another exciting first — a realistic basketball textured backing for added comfort and grip.

A New “Sidekick”?

Friday, January 19th, 2007

No, it’s not the Sidekick 4. And it’s not another Sidekick 3, but more like a Hiptop II with less hardware features and a Sidekick 3 OS. Sharp is still the manufacturer on this one, so it’s not the Motorola device we’re guessing is in the works. It sounds like this is going to be targeted at people who don’t want to drop the cash on the full feature set of a Sidekick 3. Rumor has it that it will be missing a camera (good for those in high security jobs), no miniSD card, and of course no MP3 player since there’s no storage. That’s about all we’ve heard so far. No word on whether it will be carried by TMobile, or what it will be named. We doubt it will be a Sidekick, or even a Sidekick Light, but you can bet the OS is probably similar since that’s what Danger banks on. We’ve heard that the hardware is similar, however with a different screen (lower resolution cause it’s cheaper). We’re still digging for details past that.
